No info, but I'll predict he gets our 2021 class started by next week at this time, or very shortly after.

In Koonspeak, "No info" means "per my friend Matt Freeman" or "per the ISD board"

I was being humble. But I'll rep you the actual info, which is way better than the ISD update.

Big weekend for the 2 most important ND recruits in HS. Buchner's in South Bend while JJ McCarthy's in Columbus. This is the recruiting version of a US / Soviet submarine confrontation and I'll be using my computer like sonar to track every ping.

What sucks is, if/when ND lands Buchner, I'll believe McCarthy was the right play until Buchner proves otherwise and short of an absolute domination of the Elite 11 next year, that won't happen until Buchner clearly out plays McCarthy in college post 5*Phil. I think Buchner has the tools to do so but McCarthy's film last year is what you want your college All American QB's film to look like as a soph in HS.

For the record: I did ask Santa for both.

Not trying to be confrontational, but what makes you like McCarthy more than Buchner?

Because personally when I watch McCarthy's tape I see Wimbush. Good athlete with a big arm and high completion percentage but its because he operates in an after route offense. What I mean by that is so many of his completions are from after the receivers run their routes and then he decides to scramble and find the open man.

Even when you watch his receivers run they half ass their routes and then sprint after to try to get open when he scrambles. About the only routes he seems to hit in stride from the pocket are go routes and maybe a few deep posts but even then there were some that looked open that he didn't take.

On top of that, he doesn't look to have a great feel for the pocket considering there were multiple times he scrambled into the pressure and only avoided a sack because he is a better athlete than the 6' 200lb DE he is facing.

Personally I just don't see his game translating smoothly to the college game. Just like Wimbush he will be faced with defenses that force him to hit short and intermediate routes accurately and on time and it just doesn't look like that is part of his game so far.

After watching his tape again and taking into consideration he just completed his freshman year I came to the conclusion that his tape was tied with Reggie Bush's HS highlight film as my favorite ever but then read he is a...

Michigan Lacrosse DECOMMIT and he ascended to #1.

When I say I like someone more, it's not always about who's the best current player or potential college prospect. Most times it's a combination of who's best overall, who's best for ND & who's realistically obtainable. What I try to balance in my head is what's the best ROI in recruiting efforts without slow playing the best fit / most obtainable looking for the next Trevor Lawrence. Speaking of which... I'm on record here saying that TL was the top NFL prospect in HS before his Jr year BUT that Phil Jurkovec was the #1 most important recruit for ND to land. TL was better than PJ but PJ was a better recruit for ND based on overall fit and reality of situation.

As you can see above in the post I quoted from last June, I LOVE Buchner as a QB prospect. But McCarthy checks a lot of boxes that Buchner doesn't at this time... or maybe more accurately hasn't of yet because of injury, where he lives, the program he's in and the competition he plays. The saving grace to Buchner is he and his family are Chicagoland transplants and they have historical connection with ND.

As to your reservations regarding McCarthy, go look at _______ (insert any HS stud QB's sophomore film) and see how it compares. Comparing him to Wimbush, McCarthy had a very Wimbush like year as a Soph. Wimbush only had one good year as a QB. McCarthy has a lot of time to continue to develop and take advantage of the growth spurt he underwent this year.

Are you concerned about the fact he already passed on ND once (lacrosse) and therefore becomes a flight risk if he commits for football?

Concerned that he passed on ND LAX for MI LAX? No. I don't know enough about that situation to even process it. Was ND LAX even in the picture? When did he commit to MI LAX? 9th grade? 8th grade? Does any of that matter?

I'm not worried about him as a flight risk like a Blake Barnett because the family's not life long Californians. Dad's from Colorado, went to prep school in PA and played football at Colgate. Mom went to prep school outside of DC and is a Yale grad. Tyler's early years were spent in Chicagoland... This is not your typical, Surf, Sushi and SC Cali situation.

Yeah, early recruiting in lacrosse should not even register on the radar for discussing his interest/fit for Notre Dame football. Notre Dame makes a point of doing as little early recruiting as possible, even for superstar players. And there is new NCAA lacrosse legislation that means ND wouldn't even have been able to have contact with him over the past two years. I certainly don't think in the slightest there was a binary "Buchner chose Michigan over Notre Dame" thing.

Fair enough. I want to believe in this kid.

Setting aside the throwy bits that I don't pretend to understand well: in this kid's freshman film he looks and moves like an FBS linebacker prospect's junior film. It's easy to see him as a dominant athlete in any sport.

I am in [platonic, football] love.

NDC - how do you feel about him wanting to still visit other schools after stating, "I’ve seen everything I need to see about Notre Dame"

I’m obviously not Crus, but I’d like to chime in on this. I don’t think he’s visiting other schools because he feels like Notre Dame has everything he would want in a school. I think he’s just making sure he checks off every box before he makes a decision. I’d rather him do that now than him commit to Notre Dame and have second thoughts later.

As of today, I’d think it would be a minor upset if he didn’t choose Notre Dame when the time comes

I agree but does give u that small sliver of doubt. "What else is he looking for" kind of feeling. But he had some other quotes about feeling very comfortable and checking off additional boxes that seemed very positive

This could also be apart of the staff’s new approach in recruiting. Not saying it hasn’t happened, but we haven’t seen a lot of commitments directly following visits. At least I don’t recall much of them. To reduce the amount of decommits and kids getting cold feet, maybe they’re telling kids to take other visits before making a decision or wait a couple weeks to make sure it wouldn’t be a spur of the moment decision. Not saying that this is what’s happening with Buchner, but it’s possible.

He could just be very pragmatic. Could be sold that this is the car he wants to buy but is going to check out the other one on his list just in case.

I don’t think it’s cause for alarm. It’s not like a bunch of 2021 kids are committing at this point. Staff isn’t pressuring him but he’s aware that they won’t wait for long. He’ll either be on board or new offers will go out this Spring.

could be he wants to check all the boxes and make an informed decision, could be starting to enjoy getting all the attention. could be a lot of things. one thing is certain, ESP for 21 is a long time away.
