It’s not top down. You think the HC is the one going over hundreds of recruiting profiles? No. It starts with the position coaches, then works upward.

And then the HC signs off. Especially with BK, who still had a lot of control with the roster. He eased up after the 2016 season with control over his staff, but BK would not take any recruit he personally did not believe had talent and fit the school.

Again, wrong.

The HC ultimately signs off on who they go after and makes the decision to pursue others. That isn't a decision that Rees makes. It's one that Kelly and Long make, because ultimately it's Kelly's roster and Long's offense.

And like I said, Pyne was being pursued before Rees was even hired. Kelly targeted him early and settled on him. If he felt Pyne wasn't going to develop, it's on him or Long before Rees to make that determination and open the QB recruiting up.

And the idea that Kelly is the one going over hundreds of recruiting profiles is a load of crap. You re-evaluate Pyne and determine if he's worth sticking with, and if not, you open things up, and between you, Long and Rees, go through a list of names to go after.

That's not really how ND operates, most fans know that. If you've been offered a scholarship and it's accepted then the university typically honors those regardless what happens going forward with injuries or other mitigating factors.

No, the filtering process starts at the bottom, then goes up to the HC, then actual process starts.

Even if that's accurate, which it's almost certainly not:

Pyne was targeted and pursued BEFORE Rees was hired. So in your scenario, the filtering process had already begun and they already had Pyne as the primary target and he was the only QB they offered. Kelly clearly made the determination that he was the main guy they'd go after early on and settled on him.

Rees' opinion matters less than that of Kelly or Long, the guys who are higher up the ladder and this is the leader of the offense and arguably the team we're talking about. It's not the same situation as it would be for OL or LB. Not to mention, Rees was a first year position coach, which gave him less credibility when sharing his opinion against Kelly and Long, who had significantly more experience.

The II pod made it seem like the QB that ND wants isn't in the portal yet (because he is playing a bowl game) and they may be willing to wait for him to enter. I have no idea who that would be though.

Edit - never mind he's not. Yeah that's who it is then.

I don't see anyone in the portal outside of maybe Leary as an obvious upgrade over Buchner. Would still pray for a dude like Hartman. Am fine with Card also, just don't think he'd win the job.

Obvious upgrade, maybe it doesn't play out that way. But what they've actually done on a football field is obviously different. Buch might improve and maybe Card does or doesn't, for that matter. But, too this point these two aren't even remotely close.

I don’t think we need an “obvious upgrade” from Buchner. We just need a obvious upgrade from Pyne.

Buchner is talented enough to reasonable candidate to start next year. We need a second QB who is also a reasonable candidate to start next year. They compete for the job, best man wins. Hopefully the other sticks around.

If Drake Maye wants to come, of course, great. But the main goal of taking a transfer QB next year is to have options, which we didn’t have this season.
