I don’t think we need an “obvious upgrade” from Buchner. We just need a obvious upgrade from Pyne.

Buchner is talented enough to reasonable candidate to start next year. We need a second QB who is also a reasonable candidate to start next year. They compete for the job, best man wins. Hopefully the other sticks around.

If Drake Maye wants to come, of course, great. But the main goal of taking a transfer QB next year is to have options, which we didn’t have this season.
ND is getting Drake Mayer?

I don't see anyone in the portal outside of maybe Leary as an obvious upgrade over Buchner. Would still pray for a dude like Hartman. Am fine with Card also, just don't think he'd win the job.
Grayson Mccal would certainly be one. Any proven starter is better than an unproven youngster who isnt a 5 star/ very high 4 star

I think we might just need to get used to this. Seems like more and more talent is portaling each year
It's a bit of an anomaly. The only reason Armstrong and McCall (and others) are still eligible is because their 2020 seasons don't count as using up a year of eligibility.

So, is this an accurate QB recap? (247 portal rankings)

1) McCall-will most likely will stay in the South- maybe Auburn?
2) Leary- no intrest from ND :(
3) D.J U.-probably west coast somewhere, maybe UCLA?
4) Card- graduates in Dec, TCU lean but depending on what Duggan does, looking for a good BSchool Grad program if so good for ND
5) Altmyer-is he an ND take? I have no Idea
6) Sims- is he an ND take?
7) Drones- No idea who this dude is.
8) Armstrong- leaning toward Syracuse?

I know there will be more portal QB's after bowl season so this list will change.

Pratt would be my #1 and it seems like that is who 247 seems to be alluding to the staff potentially waiting for. No idea if that is true or not but he's on the board and likely near the top.

I wouldn’t consider Card a TCU lean

TCU is apparently landing WRs Chris Marshall and JoJo Earle from A&M and Bama. Would bet on Duggan staying with a decent NIL deal and working with that over a late round NFL pick or elsewhere at this point

Duggan might return to TCU for another year? He's not good enough to get drafted?

He definitely could but why not stay? He’s not guaranteed to make a roster. Penix at Washington I would think has higher NFL draft grade and even he is staying. I think it’ll be a nice development, the intentional development of NIL. Pay Duggan a $1 mil or whatever more than a late round signing bonus to stay and run it back?

Tangent: couldn’t Book have theoretically come back for 2021 using his COVID year? Coan was good but how nice would that have been toss Ian $1 mil and say just come back.

Trying to think off the top of my head but the 2024 NFL Draft class at QB is weaker than this years. This year he’d be battling Stroud, Young, and Levis. Maybe Anthony Richardson? Next year is Caleb Williams, maybe Jayden Daniels?

After Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, I couldn't tell you who the next best QB that will be draft eligible in 2024 would be.

He’s not really competing with any of them in either year though. I guess the counter to my argument is so many of these mid - late round guys are coming back maybe now you capitalize on their decisions and go. Leary, Hartman (expected), Bo Nix (expected), Penix, Jayden Daniels? Rattler? Others even like Pratt, McCall. Definitely gonna be a vacuum for someone to go with others returning/transferring.

I thought we'd already have our quarterback by now. I'm feeling impatient.
If the issue is our #1 target won't commit until after his bowl game, then there's no reason to be impatient. The real question is what's the contingency plan once that date comes and goes and still no commitment?

But why? We didn't get Jack Coan until January
The risk of waiting is if we miss on Pratt we’re likely looking at someone far down the list at that point. I’m on team Pratt but I think it’s reasonable concern

Brockermeyer, too.

All it takes is one great season, and recruits/transfers take notice.
