I am not really into moral victories. We should have won the game. The 12 penalties are not acceptable. We had the ball at the 50 with 2 minutes to play and could not score. The offensive game planning continues to be subpar. Whether that is Long or Kelly I do not know.

The team played hard and had a chance to pull of an alltime great win but came up short.

We've got to open up the offense a little bit but there is only one way we close the gap with the elite teams: close the recruiting gap. The staff need to keep this class together and grow it just a bit more and they need to continue signing top 5-10 classes rather than top 11-15.

I love Chris Finke but I believe he should be replaced. His steadiness no longer outweighs the promise of the younger guys. We need more athletic talent on the field.

Take away his bobble-turn-interception and the game is different. I like Finke a lot but you don't win by playing the most likable players.

Would much rather win out, & be the team on the outside looking in for the playoff rather than get in to be honest. Alabama and Clemson are a different class right now. Win a NY6 Bowl game and finish in the top 4. Would be most successful 3 year run going back to 88-90.

I was doubtful a 12 win ND would make the playoffs no way is 11-1.
Clemson, Bama or Georgia or LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma are all going 12-0.
Would not mind a bowl game against Texas.

Gonna be really hard for Bama and LSU and UGA to go 12-0 seeing that Bama plays LSU week 11 and then in the SEC championship game someone has to lose. But what do I know maybe they could all go 12-0

Also last year was the first year multiple teams made the playoffs being undefeated. Its early in the season. Soooo much football to be played. Anything can happen.

Kelly doesn't have these guys ready for big games but let's be honest, we are playing against young NFL defenses when we go up against Bama, Clemson, Georgia, OSU, etc. with a nice college offense.
These programs would look at Finke, Liam, and say 'next'. These teams would look at any perceived weakness at any position and eliminate it immediately because it's going to be exploited.
Georgia is being built to beat one team, Alabama.

Clemson is built to beat Alabama.

Alabama is built to overwhelm every team they line up against.

Ohio State is built to compete with those teams.

We are built to represent The University Of Notre Dame as Student Athletes and to try to be relevant and in the conversation.

This is why we will never be able to defeat these teams. We can come close sometimes during the regular season when they have one week to prepare and are banged up a bit. But that's it

If you truly believe this team wasn't ready to play, you are nuts

We do build as student athletes and it may be the reason we never win another NC in this new climate but its what makes ND special. It's why I loved them as a kid, its why I busted my ass in school to get accepted and why I am damn proud to be an alumni. I love what this institution stands for and couldn't be more proud of how they played. Truly believe this team is going to get better and better and we may not have enough on the schedule to get back to the playoffs, but I promise no one wants to see us on a neutral field

We didn’t run very many run plays which I’m extremely impressed with. Chip Long showed a great offense in the first half. I thought he could have expanded on that. There’s nothing wrong with running a trickery play twice.

I’m confident that ND can play anyone to a decent game. Barring injury obviously and maybe Bama, haha.

We had 131 yards in the first half and our only TD drive was 8 yards.

Going forward hopefully Kevin Austin is out of the dog house soon because I’m tired of seeing Finke he doesn’t do anything for me as a WR and he never attempts to return a punt. I want Keys taking as many reps as he can the kids already proven he has better hands than anyone on the team. With Austin and Young back and Keys playing better Finke should only see garbage time. Also last night Bracey showed be he may be our best pure corner and what I mean by that is capable of turning around correctly and playing the ball because Pride has yet to do this.

I agree with most saying ND played with heart. Absolutely no quit in this team, very proud of them.

But Kelly has to win one of these games. We had a perfect chance down six with the ball with 2 mins left. Those are the moments we have to seize. Long has to be better in those situations and Book has to execute better. I'm not putting the loss squarely on thos two either but the opportunity was there for the taking and we couldn't get it down. And it would have been legendary.

I still think we have to be careful over the next 4 games. We absolutely could drop one. I think our playoff hopes are over barring some crazy upsets but at least we earned some respect.

Everyone is destroying finke which I get and it’s understandable but he’s also playing Micheal young’s role and it’s not his usual position. Once young comes back then finke will go back to slot in his natural position. I’m as pissed as anyone about Finkes play

Imagine being a Georgia fan and watching ND repeatedly try to involve finke instead of players who clearly had a physical advantage over their defense, Claypool and kmet. They were probably confused and grateful.

He played quite a bit from what I saw. He's just not going to get as much play when we've got Cole Kmet dominating at the same position.

Then run a damn double tight offense.

I mean, why the heck is Finke on the field when we have TEs like this???

This has got to be a case of the Rudy with BK giving this guy charity. He wouldn't play on any team not in the MAC or maybe the B10

The guy essentially won the USC game for us last year and now he’s getting murdered for one bad game. Ridiculous and embarrassing.

Oline did great pass blocking, not so much run blocking. Should have run a little more power under center to keep their D honest. Might have opened the outside up.

Long calls a good game when under pressure (opening drive , 2 minutes before half, end of game except that flea flicker). Other then that, didn’t see a lot to counter Their aggressiveness. I’m not impressed.

Defense showed they are legit. Would have liked to sent a corner blitz on one or two plays when UGA was driving in the second half.

How in the world does Kmet get do many false starts?

It took UGA playing an almost perfect game to beat us. We’ll be fine.

This.

Everyone complaining needs to take a chill pill and realize we just took the number 3 team in the country down to the wire and a chance to win. We will be just fine. And who knows what can happen with playoffs if we end up 11-1. Way too early in the season to just say we are completely out of it.

That’s the point though do you want Finke in the Slot or Keys? Keys is gonna be a great WR for us he is already better than Finke. What’s Long and company do next year with Kmet, Mayer and Tremble all at TE

That’s a legitimate point. He was pretty open when he came out of his break. The offense (coaches and players) did pretty much all they could collectively to loose this one. With that in mind I was pleasantly surprised ND had a shot to win there at the end.

Yea...I gotta admit I was pretty Salty after the three three-and-outs to start the second half, and the things these guys did to themselves. It was pretty cool that they were even in a position to win....after all of that.

BK plan and simple needs to do what he did last year and bench the returning, nice guy, playmaker from the year prior (Finke) for someone more suited to move us forward (Keys).

And yes, we went down to the #3 team's house (helped set a new attendance record), lost the turnover battle, lost the penalty battle, had at least two starting difference making players out on the offense, rushed for less than 50 yards, and still almost one that damn game.

This team is for real, this coach is for real and despite the fact we don't have 5 stars all over the place, we can hang. Win the rest of the games, get those 5 stars in next year and get the bronze mold ready for BK's stature in a couple of years.

I love how many on this board think:

1. Georgia is great and will kill us by 8 td's
2. We play a pretty good game in Georgia and have a chance to win
3. Based on that- Georgia isn't so good and will be killed by Clemson or Bama

Bottom line - we suck

It gets old!

I am wondering how much longer Kelly will stick around. He is nearing that point at which previous coaches all moved on from ND. If he sticks around, great then we see if he can finally get over the hump and win one. If he is out say after next season, would the administration be willing to promote a guy like Lea?

QB - Ian played his tail off. Thought he did okay
RB - There’s just no talent at RB. Plain and simple. Nobody is fast. Nobody breaks tackles and they don’t even go through the right hole half the time. Yes OL blocking could’ve been better but it’s a Top 5 rush defense in the country and the RB couldn’t do anything
WR - There’s Chase Claypool and everyone else. Time for Kevin Austin to come back because the talent isn’t good enough to beat elite teams. I think Pete Sampson tweeted something about ND’s skill position talent being the major difference in the game and it really is. I think Keys and Claypool can play but Finke can’t get open anymore and when covered can’t make contested catches. So what’s he good for?? Also would love to know from someone who was paying attention. Did Javon McKinley even play? Or was it Finke from outside and Keys from the slot? Cause I didn’t notice him on the field at all or he never got open. Del Alexander needs to seriously upgrade the talent at the position group
TE - Welcome back Mr. Kmet. He’s a star. Tremble is pretty dang good too but needs to learn how to block
OL - Very very good in Pass Pro. Picked up blitzes all night long. Obviously run blocking could’ve been better but I saw it as more of a RB a problem than an OL problem. Penalties were an absolute killer but apparently that was more of a coaching staff issue with not doing certain snap adjustments. Overall okay effort.

DL - Got beat by the best unit in college football. Plain and simple. Zero pressure generated on Fromm which is too bad but ND’s unit isn’t as good as UGA’s unit. Watched Andrew Thomas dominate Julian Okwara. I thought this would be Julian’s coming out party on the national stage but he was thoroughly dominated. Luckily you probably won’t see a better LT going forward on any team in the country but disappointed in the DLine cause I really thought they’d have a big time game. They did well on run defense which was a nice surprise but overall they were outmatched
LB - Super impressed with the play of the LBers. They made plays all night long and it was really fun to watch. Yes, UGA found their running legs later in the second half but they held probably the best running team in the country to under 5 yards a carry and under 200 yards rushing which is super impressive. JOK showed why the ND analysts believe he’ll be a star at ND
CB - Very impressed with the pass defense from ND. Lawrence Cager made some big time plays but it took marvelous plays and incredible passes to get those plays done. Really like the CB group.
S - Another strong game from the safety group. Probably the best unit on the team.

ST - Jay Bramblett is really good. That’s what it’s like to recruit a number one talent at their position. I’m very excited for his future at ND. Doerer has really turned things around from last season and looks really solid. Returners had nothing on the day but a very good day on special teams. Brian Polian has had that unit performing this season which is exciting.

Overall I think ND looks like a top 10 team in the country. They are close and they’ve got a really good football team. I’m really disappointed in the offensive gameplan against UGA because ND does the same predictable stuff all game long. There are only so many misdirection 5 yard plays that are available in a playbook when the safeties jump every route. Book doesn’t look that terrible throwing a deep ball cause the one to Lawrence Keys was a picture perfect throw and I don’t see why ND couldn’t do more of that. Idk if it’s Long or BK or issues with no speed at WR but the offensive game plan was who could ND get open within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage which is soooo painful to watch. The defense is going to keep ND in every football game cause they are really good and they’ve got a really good DC. Bringing in top impact talent like Chris Tyree and Jordan Johnson hopefully will push ND over the top in the future. They need some game changing talent at their skill positions in the future. I’m extremely nervous about Virginia this coming week as that’ll be a real test for the team to bounce back. Overall I’m pretty excited for this team and now I’m a huge UGA fan cause I hope they go undefeated and that’ll make ND’s loss the best in the country!

I think Kelly will be around for a while. He seems very upbeat and things are trending up. He seems to know how to work with the administration. Lou left because he was tired of battling the admin. Ara left because he was burned out.

Love Finke, but when he goes against 5 star talent his lack of it shows.

No one is saying this. 1 and 2 are clearly Clemson and Bama. Then below them is Georgia. Then razor thin below them is ND, OU, OSU, etc

That’s how I am feeling this morning after sleeping on it. There’s no one on the rest of the schedule that’s Georgia level and we battled them to the end. Go 11-1 and see what happens with other teams

Check back in a week. If we come back and rip UVA a new one, I think we’ll be on to a good year. If we’re flat and hungover, things could go sideways fast.

The more I think about the scheme vs talent question on offense, the more I come down on the problem being talent.
Long did what he could to create plays but we had zero running game (which was not so different than the 2017 Georgia game, if you recall) and only two pass catchers capable of making plays against athletes like theirs. Also Lenzy was hurt? That doesn’t help.
I’m not sure what you do about that mid-season, but I don’t think the answer is more Chris Finke.
