Considering that we have a rich tradition of walk ons having success with our team, and one is currently starting for us, I would say that keeping a kid that is a national champion wrestler as a walk on would be a fairly nice thing. I would apologize if that offends you, I guess I would just prefer to keep our walk on talent coming in... ;)

To this point, BK identified the PWO program as an area that ND could really excel in and bring depth to the program since we can't utilize some of the other roster management tactics other schools we compete against use. So, I'd agree that keeping our D-1 talented PWO's in the boat is a good thing.

Wrestling has a max of 9.9 scholarships to spread through a whole team. The most Iowa would give would be maybe half a scholarship. Not that he wouldn't take it, and yes it would be cheaper than full price at ND. However, wrestling is a thankless sport. It's the toughest (sure, debatable), and one of the least rewarding. If it's me, and I can choose, I choose ND football every damn time. For perspective, I'm an Iowa wrestling season ticket holder.

To add to this. If you haven't wrestled or followed the sport closely, it's hard to understand, but that's what makes wrestlers such good football players. The eye/hand coordination and footwork are part of it, but the mental piece is so unique. Adding to that, there are a lot of very good wrestlers out there that don't get offers or only get a partial as Pumpdog mentioned. Typically when kids that get an offer from a B1G school or one of the other national powers like Oklahoma or Okla St. they've won three or four state titles and have gone undefeated each of those years.

To give you an idea of the level of competition at the collegiate level, Alex Tsirtsis was an undefeated four time state champion from Griffith HS in Indiana. Here's what Alex did while at Iowa. Career -- all-American, placing seventh at 2006 NCAA Championships... four-time Big Ten placewinner (4th-2009, 3rd-2006, 3rd-2007, 5th-2005)... went 21-7 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena... started 74 dual matches. Notice no NCAA championships beside his name.

Wrestling gives a lot more, too: great core strength and whole-body integrity for exerting power and resistance, plus mighty hands, indomitable will, and a thinly-disguised desire to whip someone's @ss.

Wrestlers have more ability to hold you off them [i.e. not let you get into them] than anybody else I know. PRIME linebacker [or DE] talent.

Per Loy, backed off his commit as a preferred walk-on and is going to consider his actual scholarship offers.

Sounds like a smart move on his part. He is a legit D1 talent, and could potentially excel at a smaller program without the financial risk of dropping $50k/year for the first few years just to play Rudy.

Safe to assume he's not getting an offer? Wasn't sure if he would be worth bringing back in on scholarship if we miss on other guys. He was Mr. Football in TN after all.

Was just on a tour of this kid's school this morning. Ended up talking to the head S&C coach for awhile and forgot to ask about him. Oh well, good luck to the kid.
