Playoffs are great for cruitin'. Getting smashed in the playoffs, not so much. Just praying for a good first round match up if we are blessed enough to be there. Is it bad if I hope for Bama to contract diarrhea team wide prior to their playoff game?

No good. Saban has that angle covered too.

My two cents as an outsider: I'd rather make it to the playoffs and lose than not make it and win a NYD6 game.

I'd rather make it to the playoff and win but a big win on NY Day could equate to a #3 or #2 finish depending on how the others games go.

Not to shabby a year after losing 2 Top OLs and a dynamic RB, as well as starting out the season with a BIG question at QB.

13-0 plays well for program momentum and recruiting heading into 2019.

But lots of games to play before then.

The 2013 class was pretty solid. I don't think the Bama Beatdown harmed recruiting.

I also think that if we played Bama this time I'd look more like the 2015 Fiesta Bowl, where we're behind two scores or so for most the game but are sort of in it. I don't think it would be like 2013.

I think the impact of bad bowl play is more the year after. But yes, rank wise, 2013 was good... but...
Isn't 2013 the Vanderdont year lol. 13 was a highly ranked class because of Jaylon and..... Max, Vanerdont, and Bryant. All 5 star rivals guys. At least one worked out.

There are plenty of good reasons for either view. Plenty of positives you can gain from both. I'd take getting into the playoffs and losing over winning a NYD6 game, but only barely.

BTW, aren't you happy to be able to have this conversation and have to worry about it? This isn't an undefeated team that looks shaky with everyone waiting for reality to hit. This is a legit playoff team that looks capable of playing with anyone.

Yes, it's been a really fun year as an Irish fan. Can't imagine what it's like to have this feeling every single year.

But if Kelly keeps the train on the tracks for the remainder of the schedule, it'll be back-to-back 10+ win seasons and 3/4 10+ win seasons. That's enough for me to celebrate but only if we go undefeated this season.

Too much talent on our roster to fall short now, we need to get to the playoffs and let the chips fall where they may. Being one of the four is all I'll ask of Kelly and any future coach. At that point, any thing can happen and it's been a successful season.

I don't think i can ever be greedier than that, holding coaches accountable for not winning NCs, etc. Maybe I'd be singing a different tune if I grew up an Irish fan in a different generation.

2011: Team is 0-2, looks destined to play in a crappy bowl, and all the talk leading up to USC debacle that year is how ND can still make the Fiesta Bowl and play a good opponent

2018: Team is 6-0, looks destined to go to playoffs, and all the talk is about how making the playoffs would be a disaster because Bama

Nobody is getting younger. Lets go for it!!!!

Amen brother. Beating UCF in the Tangerine Bowl (BUT IT'S ON JANUARY 1st at 8PM!!!) is not a bar worth achieving IMO. Making the playoffs and having a shot would be.

I would rather play on the biggest stage regardless of outcome than brag about winning a game against a team whose SOS doesn't rank anywhere near any P5 program in the country. Beating the mightiest cupcake of them all is hardly worth bragging about.

This is a different dialogue tho. The original post I responded to stated it would be better to lose to Bama than to beat UCF... I really shouldn't have to go into why that's dumb.

If someone were to say, "Let's take a shot in the playoffs,... who knows,... we might just win"... you get nothing from me.

Dude, this isn't a different dialogue. CondomsSuck said in the post above mine that he wouldn't want to play Alabama no way no how. Guess what...if we want any shot at the championship, it is going to go through Alabama one way or the other, more than likely.

Saying you would rather guarantee a bowl victory against a group of 5 opponent rather than make the playoffs and play on the biggest stage, because you are assuming the outcome is inevitable, is weak.

UCF is fired up for NY6 bowl games. We should be fired up for the chance to play for a national championship, even if that means going up against mighty Bama and having a slim chance of victory.

It is okay for you to disagree with me, brother. But the arrogance you display in acting like there isn't even a debate to be had here is what rubs me the wrong way.

Is "Make it to the playoffs as the #3 team, beat Ohio State's ass, then get crushed by Bama" an option?

Because I'd take that, rather than debating 'NY6 Win' vs 'First-Round Exit'

Yeah I'm down with that. Giving Meyer a month of prep scares me, but maybe this is his exit-year and therefore loses a few steps?

I’m arrogant?? Bro, you asked, twice, for my feedback.... the post above shouldn’t matter. You said you wouldn’t want a NY6 bowl win if it’s against a UCF type opponent and that you’d rather lose to a big team in the post season instead. Then asked for thoughts... Let. That. Sink. In. It is a completely different dialogue.... I never said I don’t want the playoffs... now you’re just making shit up and projecting your “lose to bama” take on me to hide your original take. I can kind of get bishops take, this guy has seen his team win multiple nattys and big bowls games both in the last decade. For an Irish fan to say I’d rather lose in a big postseason game against a big opponent than win a big post season game against a small one is the arrogant ND fan stereotype other bases constantly try to paint us as come to life...

If we are saying let’s “aim big, maybe we win” no issue... if we are saying “screw a game against UCF because they are small potatoes regardless, I’d rather lose a game”... then come on man.

I asked you for YOUR feedback ONCE, and the only reason being was that this was your brilliant insight to my original post:

Well I guess that changes things....

I responded to this:

Is it flawed logic for me to think that I'd rather have ND lose to Alabama in the Playoff than to beat UCF in a New Year's Six bowl game?

And only this..., if you don't want feedback maybe refrain from asking for it, especially concerning takes like this. If you think I came off arrogant or you didn't like my tone then my bad. I answered your honest question honestly.

Perhaps I misinterpreted, but water under the bridge, all good.

My bad for getting this thread a little of the path. Back to predictions based on our bada$$ 6-0 start.

Perfect scenario would be to make the playoffs, beat OSU, Book pull his hamstring running out for the National Championship game and have Wimbush lead us to a loss against Alabama so I can at least have an excuse for losing other than the obvious.

Better scenario would be that Tua pulls his hamstring and we somehow stymie Hurts like Clemson did so the game is close one way or the other. Who knows, could get lucky in that scenario.

Bama with Hurts, is one dimensional like ND with BW.
Except they have 5 stars at most positions...

Want to see the current playoff system blow up?

Notre Dame takes a Playoff spot this year and two SEC teams get to the Playoff because the SEC title matches undefeated Bama and Georgia and both have been ranked 1 and 2 all year. Three of the other four Power 5 conference champions get left out. The expectations become that ND will contend for a Playoff spot annually.

If this actually came to fruition, I have 0 doubt that the playoff committee and the NCAA would scramble to find the quickest path to a 8-team playoff. The uproar would be deafening...

My two cents is that I too would like to make the playoffs and lose than win a NY6 game. Disclaimer...I grew up a Bills fan and know what I'm talking about when it comes to losing the big one (four times in a row).

PS...I'm now a rabid Browns fan...that's a whole different conversation.

I would be down for that, but top 8 teams get in, no auto bid stuff

The auto-bid, IMO, would allow better OoC scheduling, and make football better all around.
I'd also limit cup cakes in an 8 team playoff.

Why would teams schedule harder games when they wouldn't count? They would sched more cupcakes to keep the teams fresh

They schedule cupcakes now to keep fresh and pad their record. Giving an auto bid allows them to not worry about losing an OoC game to a big or even medium name, and missing out because of it.
