After watching Kelly for 6 years, Kelly's praise of the freshman needs to be translated. This is what he said:

“[The freshman DBs] are probably, as a group, more ready to play than anybody we have on our football team . . . So, when you say impressed, I mean, I’m impressed with Okwara and Jones and Ade. Those defensive linemen are going to be very special players. There is some more development that goes on there. Tommy Kraemer is an impressive player. There is a lot to be impressed with a number of them, but if the question I’m reading into correctly is who are the guys that are close to playing, I think your eyes have to look toward the corners and safeties in particular. That group, we’ve got some players that will play as true freshmen and impact our football team positively.”

TRANSLATION:

That 5-star kid, Tommy Kraemer is the best freshmen, like everyone thought. But we really need the freshman DBs, especially the safeties, to be good, so I'm going to start building their confidence. Also, we'd really like something additional off the edge, so here's hoping one of the freshman DE/OLBs develops quickly.

We'll put. I agree. I know I'm biased as I'm from British Columbia and live an hour from Abbotsford where Claypool is from, but I think he may surprise us this year and fill some of the void from Alize.

Kid reminds me so much of Mike Evans.

I read this as Abootsford.

So it's safe to assume Kelly was referring to Jamir Jones not Jonathan Jones?

Yep I think so. Kelly stating that 3 True Frosh DE's have impressed was sweet music to my ears.

Interesting...really like Jamir at Sam...but what do I know.

Oh yes you're right. Jamir is likely a Sam. I think he might end up a starter for us for a few years.

Could be starting as soon as next year.

I don't see him not red shirting this year and playing on all core special teams.

First practice started a little bit ago. For anyone itching for something to analyze there's a decent amount of snaps up already on ND Football's Snapchat.

From the freshman group DB, when I think NB I immediately go to Elliott and Love, though I don't think Love plays this year. Vaughn and Pride definitely outside guys, Pride could play as a 3rd or 4th CB on the field if needed.

Weird note on Vaughn, anyone else catch that he was listed as a Safety on the roster? BK corrected it saying he's a CB but just interesting. I think he ends up as a FS.

Like Arrow alluded to I'd probably prefer to have Studstill playing as a high FS.

Lastly you have the LB/S hybrids in Morgan and Perry. One probably ends up a LB IMO. Both could be effective as NBs, believe you call them JACKs in some defenses, in the right sub-package. Probably not this year though.

Color me possibly wrong already. Love apparently impressed today running as the #2 NB.

McIntosh at slot is a win-win; fills a need and gets him involved as he's bulking up.

In the highlight video I thought our QB's looked great. ESQ looked solid and Claypool looked all of 6'4 220.

Riddle me this, if Wimbush comes out and is clearly a better player than Kizer or Zaire, does he jump over them?

I know someone who was there...they were pretty bad according to him. First day though...no worries.

I meant in the video. Looked in great shape. Especially Zaire. All of them showed great footwork and fundamentals in drills. I did read they were off in passing but I'd say that's typical day one stuff. I'm not worried
