Since Koon is gone who is breaking down the highlight films and saying how great they look and who's gonna break out this year?

Just watched the pratice video from today and they are getting worse and worse every year. Maybe 10 seconds of footage and 90 seconds of listening to Jack Collinsworth

these video's are indeed very terrible. I guess the staff does not want to give too much away.

The videos are substantially shorter than years past, right? Didn't they used to be 3-3:30 mins.

yeah and they did a focus on the coaches/position groups in each episode too.

I think not having Jack Nolan there maybe the reason for the lack of coverage, but this is truly disappointing. Anybody know if ISD, II or anybody else was recording at practice, or was it closed doors?

generally if they are there, then their videos go up pretty quickly and well before UND.com's so I am guessing they are not there today. Nolan is with the hoops squad for the tourney so hes not on campus

Yeah, I'm aware that Nolan is doing the tourney, but it'd be disappointing that the lack of content is due to his absence. I don't know if they aren't there because they decided not to, or if the practice was closed to the media. Me thinks the latter.

So basically, the whole LB corps will be cross-training at nearly every LB position, in an effort to get the best combination on the field.

Good. Seems foolish to have talent stacked up in the depth chart and someone not as good playing the next position over.
We may finally be in shape to execute Diaco's mythical "nine CAT" defense.

Not surprised on the comments about Grace. He's been somewhat forgotten by some with the lengthy time off, but he earned a spot prior to the injury. If he ends up being more athletic and understands the plays having studied them, I wonder if he doesn't split reps with Schmidt or something. Maybe they move Schmidt to the outside?

The 8-3 is currently regarded as the best way of stopping tempo spread offenses, and versatility among the back 7 is its main feature.

Just a couple of notes from Defensive coaches interviews. Gilmore, Elston, BVG, and Lyght all met with the media today.

Trumbetti has set himself apart from Blankenship and Williams with his consistency. Gilmore called him an upperclassmen. Blankenship flashes but needs to be more consistent. The same goes for Williams. The potential is there for him to be a very good pass rusher but he's not there yet and they want him to be an every down lineman, which he isn't yet.

BVG called the 3 freshman (Coney, Tillery, and Micah) outstanding through the first 4 practices. Making the transition to college game quickly. Gilmore notes that he's pleased with both Tillery and Micah but Tillery is slightly ahead.

I forget where this was being discussed (Jaylon Smith thread?) but I'm very happy to see the coaches taking this approach. It allows you to either A) get your best talent on the field and B) have contingency in case of injury and C) be able to move people around and change alignments to counteract an opponents gameplan.

As for defending the spread, and the 8-3 and all that jazz... I think it's truly ridiculous how the author poo-poos the "bend but don't break" style of defense at the article when Ohio State just won a championship with it against the best spread offense in the country. Ohio State played a rather passive defense against Oregon and kept everything in front of them and Oregon's offense imploded when they had to make a methodical march down the field instead of getting huge chunk plays. So I really don't care if offenses are "unafraid" of that style... if you have the horses up front and on the back end it totally works. It only fails if your DL can't win and your back end can't cover.

This is perhaps what I like the most, due to the fact that they could *potentially* move Jaylon around series-to-series or even play-to-play to take advantage of his full range of skills, while simultaneously keeping the offense from being able to eliminate him simply through playcalling.

Right, even if you only do it on 20% of the snaps, it stops an opponent from being able to come into the week going "OK, here's how we're going to neutralize Jaylon Smith" it's "OK, here's where they line up Jaylon Smith on various plays, how do we account for that?" It goes from being a static element to a dynamic one in their prep.
