Chris Finke pushing himself into contention for return man duties is a great story. Would be amazing to have a a walk-on freshmen see the field

He isn't doing that. He has had a GREAT camp, which deserves high praise, but a true freshman walk-on isn't going to takeover that spot. The kid is always open and runs good routes, but he might be 5'9 165 too. He is someone that is going to be annoying the first-team D when he is on scout team O and will give them good looks.

I would put him on scholarship watch now over the next 3 years. Definitely a kid that is going to make this team better, but I am not sure he will ever see the field with the athletes ND has at WR and in the return game.

That makes sense. I would hope that if he walked on and eventually earned a scholarship, that before he graduated, BK would throw him a bone to get him on the field too. Rudy style, ya dig?

I tell you what, that kid stood out big-time at practice on Saturday. Luckily, they gave all the attendees a roster, or else it would have bugged the crap out of me wondering which scholarship freshman he was. Put it this way, #27 won A LOT of one on ones, and when they went team, he got open a few times as well. And he caught everything. I had forgotten to put him in my little practice write-up, but on that day, that kid looked like a scholarship WR.

As TP said though, he’s a little guy. But man, how many times have we seen guys like him go to Purdue, Mizzou, or Stanford and be massive pains in the butts of opposing defenses? Finke's got a ton of talent ahead of him, so I’m definitely not saying he’ll be a major contributor to ND after just one good practice. But I will echo what TP said in that I could easily see him getting a scholarship down the road, and I’ll even go so far as to say he’ll have like a 10 to 15 catch senior season. Kid showed out on Saturday, and is a testament to how far BK’s PWO program has come.

Surprised we haven't heard much of Holmes. IIRC he was having a great spring.

I don't see him starting over Martini. That's not a slight to Coney. I just think Martini continues to be overlooked by the fan base. I agree we are fortunate to have Coney though. He's going to be a stud.

Did I misunderstand BK in his opening fall camp presser when he said they'd do what they could to get Ishaq prepared for the NFL,, including letting him practice in the fall if he wasn't cleared? If I heard that correctly, what's the difference between letting him practice now vs. after they get a ruling from the NCAA?

To me, Martini was an under-rated recruit that continues with that rap. I think it is interesting that the biggest reasons given for him flying under the radar was that he signed early, didn't do the camp circuit, and didn't play against top competition in high school. I have wondered if that is what took him a while to "catch on," even with the coaches?

Last year I remember watching tape of his plays and thinking his instincts, physicality, and athleticism were off of the charts! I have not seen one thing to dissuade me that my feelings were wrong . . .

As far as Ishaq, you were right. You have Kelly's words. But as TP says, no one will take the field without certainty of eligibility, especially after last year!

Yesterday in the PC, Kelly's words about TP were telling! It sure sounded like there was a communication between the lines, in that the next step was a written petition by Ishaq, separate from the University, and or, without the Universities involvement!

From my brain: Seems to be more leaders on this team then years past. For example, BK mentions leaders this year, however, in years past, he has always seemed to challenge people to be a leader. That's a good sign IMO.

Seems that camp is being refined this year. Back up QB's are being thrown in live and more Frosh seem to be getting opportunities. Is this BK maturing or possibly a Sanford influence.

Coaching staff seems to be pretty solid. I just really like Sanford there, BK's mention of Lyght and Denson as being good, Bogs incessantly hyping Gilmore, Harry's success since he stepped on campus, the experience of Quinn and Elliot (Bogs would and probably has called them mad scientists in a back room creating strategic advantages). Just a warm fuzz about this staff.

The Kool-Aid is green, chilled, and looking pretty darn good right about now.

Stop it Fbolt, you are making me blush!

  • Leadership do seem to be off the charts this year, do-int, it? (Coach compared it to '12 and listed it as superior, all the while eloquently complementing the senior leadership of '12 in the presser, yesterday!)
  • Singular point : Gilmore will be seen as a Harryesque success in hiring! I can't help it that it is as plain as the nose on Tillery's face! Speaking of which, lets keep an eye on Tillery's play at the nose!
  • As far as Quinn and Elliot, dat be a whole lot of experience and brain powers! I likes the picture you paint; and you know me way too well!

Highlights from today. Chris Brown's grab at 1:20 is nasty. I have no idea what his ceiling is this season, but I'd love to see him challenge Fuller as the #1 receiver. He seems like he has the physical tools, just needs to produce on Saturdays.

Coney is jacked. Tillery abused huge..almost as badly as Jaylon worked Stanley. Tillery is going to be special. Weishar works Avery pretty good. Yoon's kick would have been good from 55. The best part about it is he looks totally under control and at ease driving the ball from that distance. This kid is going to be a weapon.

As in, KR will be on kick coverage? I'd love it if we didn't have to rely on our expected all-stars to staff kick coverage. It's just one more high impact collision that could be costly.

Do we not have enough athletic guys to cover kick team? Bilal? Barajas? Coney? Martini? Throw Carlisle in there if he's willing to hit someone or Fertita and Crawford and Coleman and Butler and Farley and Sebastian.

That's a kicking team right there.

The route by Will Fuller was unfair. Nobody should be able to do that to a DB.

Using Keivaree in kick coverage would be great, in my opinion. In the "old days" when we used to send guys like Bruton down as gunners we came close to leading the country in KO return defense.

Kelly said something in a press conference recently about how he likes to use offense/defense regulars on special teams because they're mentally warmed up and engaged with the game.

Finke's Hudl highlight tape is below. Really only posting it because at 1:20 there is a nasty crack-back on one of his punts and the kid is out cold.

From reading BGI's breakdown of practice on offense what stands out to me is how advanced the freshman WR's seem to be at running routes. Some obvious growing pains but much more understanding of route concepts than typical freshman WR's. Specifically Sanders and ESB.

Can't say that this debate is even close to being over, as it just started, but I distinctly remember there were those here arguing that Boykin was the better prospect than ESB. Some even saying that he was faster. I'm feeling fairly confident in that I took the other side of that ;)

That'll happen when you recruit WRs from Texas and California.

Sirius Camp tour on college sports hits ND tonight at 7pm Eastern. They just played a clip of Jaylon with Packer and Eddie George. He is such a well spoken, humble kid. Class act and great representative of the university.

Yep that was me. I felt Boykin was the better prospect. I think Boykin will be very good so I am glad to be wrong so far and love how ESP has done thus far.

I don't think he's that, granted I wasn't there. If he's better than CJ Sanders or Will Fuller or CJ Prosise, he would've had to have some offers right? I mean it'd be one of the biggest underdog stories if he were to steal a starting spot from one of our other players.
