I'm not sure what you saw, but I thought Redfield was a vast improvement over Farley. I mean, sure, maybe they all weren't great form tackles, but he got the offensive player to the ground, or at least kept the guy wrapped so someone else could come finish him off. It was certainly better than watching Farley whiff or get shook out of his cleats. Open field tackling, as we all see on a regular basis, is incredibly difficult, and is more often than not about simply making the tackle, as opposed to how it looks. I'm a DB coach (albeit at the HS level) and what I've always taught my kids (and what I've heard from numerous college coaches at clinics) is that the bottom line is: you get the ball carrier to the ground. From there, you can teach/improve technique. Max has shown some ability to do that, which for a true freshman is nice to see. Give him the offseason in the weight room and I'm confident by the spring game he'll have far surpassed everyone else at S.
First of all the Moore part was all about the fact that I love Kendall! I think he is very underrated.
I actually think Max had a good first start, and I understand why the staff wanted to get him game experience against Rutgers.
I don't think there is one defensive back that is total above or below the crowd on this team, except I am hoping that KRussell is beginning to separate himself.
So, then my overall response wasn't as much even meant to be about Max as it was that people have dogged Mathias all season. Mathias wasn't this teams problem defensively.
And Max had a real problem getting across and helping deep on a couple of plays including the touchdown. I would like to know whether that is caused by the player, coaching, or scheme based. Because it happened to almost everyone this year.
So, Max did okay. But I think Mathias Farley did most of the year too. I think Russell was on the rise and BJax was on the decline (maybe rapid).
Next year I expect Max, to be in there with Hardy, Schumate, and Baratti competing for a starting position.
