WILTFONG-- Wimbush plays as a true freshman. I think that's the expectation when I talk to folks close to the program about it.

REALLY interested on how that works out. Thought for sure he was getting a RS.

The assumption is we can put a beat down on some of the teams on the schedule in which case Zaire comes out and we put it the 2nd stringer. What Wiltfong is saying is that there is a belief the 2nd best QB is Wimbush.

Ah I see. Although is it worth it to burn a redshirt on a QB for garbage time?

Considering the offense, and the fact that Malik is probably going to be asked to carry the ball on designed runs a significant amount more than Golson was, I think it's worth it. He's potentially just two plays away from seeing the field (though you can say that for anybody at nearly any position), so why not go ahead and plan on having him ready to go in garbage time?

I could see it being a kind of split-backup situation. If (knock on wood) something were to happen to Zaire and you need a long-term answer, maybe it's Kizer. But, if it's late in the game and you've got a lead, maybe let Wimbush get his feet under him in an advantageous situation against the competition.

And, though I doubt it's part of the reasoning, it's an added bonus that it will sort of make the class disbursement between Wimbush and a potential '17 QB a bit wider.

Chris Finke, for those that were wondering:
<iframe src='//www.hudl.com/embed/athlete/3583768/highlights/158839375' width='640' height='360' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe>

There was some talk on him when he announced he was walking on... player from Nick Coleman's HS... no jaw dropping athleticism, but that film is like 80% full of punt return TDs.

If you watch around 1:22, you'll see a kid get KTFO! The hit didn't look that vicious but he goes cold on impact.

in that 2nd video Zaire looked terrible

He didn't have a great first day according to 247. They also say Wimbush threw the ball the best today. Just keep in mind that Zaire has never consistently practiced that well. Even in the Spring he was inconsistent and thats why everybody that watched practice thought Golson was the #1.

Now I think his skillset will translate to a prolific offense and he'll get better over time but we shouldn't expect something transformative at this time.

Montana supposedly couldn't throw a spiral in practice.

With Torii Hunter Jr. getting a lot of praise and reps I wonder if he can make a run at Amir's starting spot in the slot.

Coach D didn't really rank the QB's but from the sounds of Wimbush was the most inconsistent on the day. Kizer was by far the best throwing the football down the field. He was more upbeat on Zaire's day.

I wonder why that is. I've coached guys that were disinterested in practice or for lack of a better word ' lazy' or didn't like to hit in practice and stuff like that. But generally speaking they didn't have "bad" days and were are talking high school kids.

Its interesting to me that he does seem to struggle more times than not in terms of actual practice. whats up with that?

He played well enough in the LSU game and had a good spring game, but practice just seems to be his kryptonite, its weird to me.

I'm fairly confident that you're going to see Fuller + Robinson/Brown + Hunter/Carlisle/Prosise as your primary receivers with the last three getting used in various ways as slot/RB.

Then I believe that the bigger bodied guys will have a chance to earn red zone reps from Fuller, and the slot will get sat for another TE.

I could not be more excited for this offense... as long as Zaire can throw with touch, which I have no idea if he can or cannot do. FWIW, I had one person tell me that Zaire was flat out not good today, but others said he was "fine" so take that how you will. First day of camp so who gives a shit.

Some guys are just "performers". They need bright lights, nerves and something on the line to be able to not overthink things. I don't think it always has to do with somebody being lazy, just that they turn a switch in a game setting. A switch that is very difficult to turn if not in a real situation.

It doesn't sound like Malik is necessarily lazy in practice, just not as consistent. I'm fine with that if he produces on game day. You'd like him to always be consistent, but I would rather have players that make mistakes in practice and show up on game day...as oppose to a practice warrior that doesn't show up on Saturday. Not mentioning any names there.

I thinks its partially because, as of now, these drills don't play to Zaire's strengths and the reality is right now he isn't that consistent in the passing game. His running skills are so good that they make up for being average other places. For a DT QB he's going to be as good as it gets running the football so to be successful he won't need to be incredible with his downfield passing ability but it should/will get better.

Some players only have one speed. It's hard for them to adjust to half speed, no tackling, no pads, no linemen, etc. Malik strikes me as one of these players, but it's just a guess.

He'll be fine once he straps the shoulder pads on.

I'm worried about Zaire's passing but if he can Tebow us to a natty, I'm good with it. Hopefully Wimbush is keeping the old arm loose.

I'm going to just chalk up Zaire's sub-par day to rust. (Although I know he went to the Elite 11 a few weeks ago)

Sampson commented that McGlinchey got ripped a new one by Heistand half way through practice due to a missed assignment. Sampson said he's never seen a coach get on a player like that before on day one. I like it, demand perfection Harry.

Yea, I definitely think there will be a rotation but come midseason it wouldn't surprise me if Hunter Jr. is taking more snaps than Amir.

Good point on the TE's eating into those reps because then essentially it becomes those 3 you listed plus Alize. So 4 guys vying for reps.

I think this offense without him improving on that can score 35+/game. If he can get to an above average level, consistently, with his downfield passing I think this collection of guys can get to the Baylor/Oregon of 40+/game. Just so much talent everywhere.

I didn't mean to insinuate that he was lazy. What I meant was I've coached lazy kids in terms of practice, they just sort of half -ass it but still make the throws, catch, and do the right assignments, they're just lazy about it.

I'm all aboard the Malik train, just baffled that he can't make throws vs air in practice.

Flip side though, Golson can go 100/100 in practice and go 8/40 with 5 picks in a game.

which brings me to Allen Iverson..

We talkin' bout practice

Adams is pretty big, he is also very long though

According to Prister at II, Russell was really good today, made things look easy.
