Too often than not when i watched him though he was engulfed by tackles and never really showed a counter/2nd move once his first move failed. I am not discounting his effort or desire its just he wasn't what i would call a "chess player" when it came to pass rushing.

Fair enough. Maybe I'm giving him a pass on technique b/c he had such a great motor and it covered up some of his deficiencies.

Good work.

Lots of talk about pass rush and 3rd down play, but how do you think this team will be against the run on 1st and 2nd down? But my biggest concern isn't getting pressure on the QB, but getting to 3rd and long so they can pressure the QB.

They've been concentrating a ton on 3rd down defense, and they weren't tackling the first day of the coaches' clinic practice, so it's really difficult to tell so early in the BVG tenure...

Great write up! I would not be surprised to see Rabasa find some serious playing time in this defense. Also Turner is a very interesting case at LB even if it is only 3rd down.

Not been hearing any mention of Moore lately. Was hoping he would step it up his senior season.

Turner getting a lot of work and Moore not is the same reason. Mostly 3rd down looks and packages. Moored value is his size which is better used on 1st and 2nd downs. Wouldn't look too much into that yet

I'm a little surprised by the implied negativity toward Diaco. It just seems a little...forced. Like sour grapes-y. (Probably not the right idiom, you know what I mean).

I mean, the 2012 defense was one of the best scoring and red-zone defenses in recent college football history. And suddenly his defenses didn't play as "a unit"? And couldn't get pressure? I get that they want to support the new guy, but c'mon man.

I'm with you on this, Houston.

say what u want abut Diaco, his recruting, style he played, his hair, but on the field, that 2012 D was best in a generation here at ND.

gotta give him that.

Just like we had a once in a generation defense in 2012, we had a once in a generation linebacker in Manti Teo. Diaco's defense was built on having linemen suck up blocks so that linebackers could make plays. When we didn't have that type of linebacker in 2013, our defense wasn't very good. Diaco may have been a product of Manti Teo and Diaco showed no effort to change his defense in 2013.

This, 100%. Diaco has shown, more often than not, a stubborn refusal to adjust his scheme.

Defense is built on more than 1 player... 2012 was a great front 7 but an Unknown secondary... Diacos scheme/philosophy fit perfectly with personnel. He deserves a lot of credit, especially since we all praised his body of work post Navy disaster

Romeo's former position almost always required that he avoid contact and create havoc. That's not a luxury he'll have playing on the defensive line. Sure, on passing downs, he'll be able to use a speed rush and avoid contact. But most other downs, he'll have to engage someone that is bigger and stronger. He has the physical tools (shembo did it and he was smaller), he has the staff to teach him technique and I assume he has the strength (staff obviously believes he does). IMO, it's on him. You have to be a special kind of nuts to stare down a 6'6'' 330lb pig lined up across from you and want to fight him for 60 minutes. He's going to have to want contact. Instead of running around the tackle, he needs to blow up his outside shoulder, pin him, drive him and seal the edge. When he blitzes inside gap, he has to rip hard knowing he's going to get smacked by the guard. When he's fighting to keep contain he has to launch those long arms into the tight end's pads, get the crown of his helmet into his chin strap and whip his ass. It's easier said than done.

I actually believe it's the opposite. I think Romeo will THRIVE on the line. And I don't know what you've seen from this guy, but he loves contact. Heck, I don't think you'd put him at Nose Guard if that wasn't the case. And even though he isn't that big, Romeo is definitely stronger than most of the linemen he'll face this year. He's just unnaturally strong, especially in his lower body. That will allow him to blow up and drive linemen backwards. He may not be the fastest, but he's fast enough to play LB at 260, which says enough for me.

But what did he do when the personnel didn't fit? Nothing, except telegraph blitzes all of 2013 that were completely stopped and exploited.

The reason Stanford has become a Top 10 program is by getting guys like Okwara on the Dline.

No, the reason Stanford became a top 10 program is stero... I mean... a great strength and condition program coupled with the least injuries in the NCAA.

You can't do much if you can't run the system. Either you change players or you blend philosophies to make something work.. Since there's no FA we had to blend and wait... 2012 was great, 2013 could've been similar had we suffered minimal injuries along the lines and Backfield

As for telegraphing blitzes, That's aPlayer not knowing when time it up

Exactly. Is it just luck or are they doing something we are not?

2013 was doomed because we had Dan Fox and Carlo Calabreese inside with Bennett Jackson on the outside. So, you can put it on Diaco for not recruiting worthwhile backups for post Manti, or you can put it on him for not changing his D. I know that if 9/10 of us did the same thing Diaco did in our regular jobs and continued with sub par results for 6 months without change, we would have to get new jobs. And to top it off, who is supposed to teach a player when to time up the blitz?

Most coaches are never as good or as bad as they are perceived. It's the players that make the difference. 2012 & 13 were perfect examples. 2012 you had three All American caliber players who were healthy the entire season. 2013 you didn't.

I must be dense but i don't understand what "stero" means. Can someone elaborate? I am totally missing this.
