Kelly sounds very positive about Rees and the passing game:

We can threaten you over the top. We can push the ball over your head. If you want to drop down on us, we've got some weapons that can beat you one on one, and we've got a quarterback that can see that and throw the ball to you. We struggled with doing that at times last year. We won't struggle doing that this year.

I feel very comfortable about Tommy pre-snap. He easily knows how to go from pass-to-run or run-to-pass or run left-to-run right and vice versa.

As long as his decision making has improved, and being a senior now I sure hope it has, I think he'll be alright. I'm not expecting a 25-touchdown season from him, but I doubt that's what Kelly is asking from him.

I think Kelly is counting on him throwing 25+ td's. He had 20 in 2011, I hope he's better than that. If u listen to Kelly's presser he has some confidence.

I'm watching VT's practice on ESPNU All Access right now.

I can't tell you how proud I am of our guys and coaches after seeing this.

Outside of Beamer SR. (who I like) the rest of these guys are the exact opposite of what BK talks about. These guys are clearly a group of individuals...

God I love ND.

GO IRISH.

I respectfully doubt that Kona is the second team DLine in any sense. Diaco needs bulk substitution there, just as in last year when Day/ Kona/ Tony would ALL come in at the same time to spell the big boys for a series or two.

Oh yeah, I definitely didn't mean that no DL gets in the game unless Kona is already in. There will be plenty of reps for at least three DL in addition to the starters. I guess all I meant is that I think if any of the three starters gets hurt (God forbid), Kona will start in his place.

for clarification...Ishaq is the 3RD DE in rotation

You sure it's that simple? Did Kelly clarify that today? Last presser he said something about Ishaq being the first split side end in the game, but I don't think that's the same as saying that he's the first end to play besides Tuitt and Day.

EDIT: just double-checked the quote ... Kelly did also say that Ishaq will "come in as the third end immediately." Panda's on it.

Was watching too and I had the exact same thoughts. Also thought that our clips from practice showed up far more intense and focused than VTs and the following MissSU practices. I love that all access stuff. Weird that the MissSU players couldn't leave the facilities during 2 a days. They literally brought air mattreses to sleep on in the locker room.

I've seen that with many football teams while watching the "all-access" shows.

Does anyone know which thread contains the recent quotes from Martin that are basically the opposite of this? It's strange that they're saying two different things about Rees.

hang on, let me bump Rees' thread

Martin was being facetious.

Idk where it is, but it was basically Martin saying that he is a defensive guy and he would not respect Tommy's arm strength. Possible reverse psychology on both Martin and Kelly's part? We'll see

I expect pretty good things from a few unproven players this year including Corey Robinson who i think could play a big roll in the red zone as well as Austin Collinsworth who i hope can lay the hammer on a few plays. I'm not worried in the slightest by the bigger name guys, they earned their roles and fully expect them to carry this team to another BCS bowl

I have a feeling that Robinson will embarrass some DB's this year much like Eifert and Floyd have done in the past.

We have a large pool of fast players to run down the field and hit someone.

Max
Hardy
Shumate
Cole Luke
Lo Wood
Butler
Grace
Rabasa
Councell
Moore
Onwualu

That doesn't include
Ishaq or potential redshirts Kinslaw and Fuller or walk-ons. I think we will be fine.

Edit: Forgot
Welch
Cam
Also maybe Folston or Bryant and Koyak or one of the freshman TEs if they don't redshirt.

Don't forget Prosise. I think he could be a special teams star this year the way Bennett was in years past.

It's part of the duality of Reesus.

Lol.

I don't have the transcripts in front of me, but IIRC Kelly's comments and Martin's weren't contradictory. Kelly was saying that Rees has the arm strength -- and we have the speedy receivers -- to beat defenses over the top. Martin was saying that if he were an opposing defensive coach, he would make Rees prove that he has that arm strength. So Martin was talking about what an opposing coach would have seen of Rees and the receivers he had in 2011 and the little he played in 2012; Kelly was talking about what he saw in 2013 fall camp and what he thinks Tommy and his receivers can do in 2013.

besides which, if I was Martin and had confidence that Tommy can beat teams over the top, I'd try to play up the past, get the D to cheat up and steal a deep TD early against Michigan.

If your focus is on Michigan, we're going to lose to Temple. Stop looking ahead!

Seeing a number of freshmen on the two deep tells me we've brought in some real talent. While I would prefer EG at QB, I'm pretty comfortable with Tommy. He's had a few seasons under Kelly now and knows what he wants. He can handle pressure. e saw him save a few games for us coming out of the bullpen and he's stood up to Kelly's pressure many a times. I think he's going to do quite well.

I bet he gets a lot of looks while we are in the red zone, some of the catches I've seen on videos are sick, the kid has some good hands!

This oughta help'em get an attitude!

Alabama, Stanford lead 2013 preseason Crystal Ball predictions - College Football - SI.com

Flop Team

Staples
The Fighting Irish have what appears to be a brutal schedule. Michigan should be good. Michigan State should be much better than last year. Oklahoma is Oklahoma. We just touched on Arizona State. USC is an unknown with some great athletes. BYU lures every opponent into a rock fight. Stanford looks like a potential national title contender. The Irish caught quite a few breaks last season en route to the BCS championship game. If the breaks swing back the other way, watch out.

Thamel
The Irish seemed cursed in the early days of Brian Kelly's tenure, as they suffered from bad bounces, untimely fumbles and an inability to close out close games. That trend reversed last season, as Notre Dame was charmed in the waning moments of victories over Pittsburgh and Stanford. There's going to be some market correction here, especially without quarterback Everett Golson in the fold. The Irish will win low-scoring games, but this isn't a BCS-caliber team.

Ellis
The questions surrounding Notre Dame wouldn't seem as pressing had Golson not left the program this spring. Tommy Rees takes the reins at quarterback, but his career has been wildly inconsistent to date. Factor in a brutal schedule that includes road games at Michigan and Stanford, and this team might not finish the season in the Top 25.

Rickman
Tommy Rees: The Return. I just don't see it working out for the Fighting Irish. Their opponents helped them out a ton in 2012, and I don't see luck favoring Notre Dame again in '13. A couple of bad bounces and it's out of the BCS conversation.

Anderson
Last year, seemingly every bounce went Notre Dame's way as it charged to the BCS title game. But once the Irish were back on college football's biggest stage, they were trounced by Alabama, 42-14. That morale-sapping defeat won't be easy for the program to get over. What's more, Notre Dame's arguably most important player last season, Golson, will miss the entire year for academic reasons. The Irish's luck, so pervasive in 2012, will be in short supply this fall.

Yeah. That was pretty brutal, especially since, at 14, it's not like we're even that highly ranked. No one's picking us to go 12-0 again.. FWIW, I don't think anyone will have much trouble "getting over" the Alabama game, and I've heard exactly no one but Andy Staples predict Michigan State will be "much better than last year" (they were actually far better than their record).
We've certainly got some questions, and it'd better if we had Golson. But we should be solid.

Well I guessTommy Rees could read this if he needs any extra motivation for the season.
