Did anybody else get the sense that Kelly made it seem as though Nix will be the best player on the field at all times and arguably one of the best in the country. They said the same about Manti leading up to his senior season and boy were they right. I just got so jacked up thinking about our Dline.

draftscout released their pre-season rankings of draft eligible players and they have Nix at #6 and Tuitt at #8.

Was really hoping to hear more optimism and encouraging statements in regards to Jarron Jones.

He did say last night that he expects the 6 deep to be Tuitt - Nix - Day and then Springmann - Shwenke - Jones.

We really need him to have progressed well.

Wouldn't be surprised if Rochell and/or Matuska see the field this year.

Was just going to say that I wouldn't be surprised if somebody we don't expect passes Jones this year and depending on his improvement next fall.

“@KeithArnoldNBC: Justin Utupo was listed at 6-foot-3, 251 as a freshman OLB. He's now a 6-foot-.5 and a 290 pound DL. Shrinking vertically, growing sideways.”

Based on BK's comments the past two days, I'd be shocked if Rochell doesn't see the field.

What did he say?

“@KeithArnoldNBC: Christian Lombard is listed as a Guard/Tackle on the '13 roster. Could slide inside if Ronnie Stanley or Steve Elmer emerges as a RT.”

I hope this happens

What did he say?

On my phone so I can't easily access exact quotes, but last night on the radio he talked about Rochell cracking the two deep. It sounded like BK was already viewing him as that #5 DE behind Tuitt, Day, Springman and Jones.

Me too I think the best 5 includes Stanely.

I picked Springman to be my suprise standout in some thread awhile back and I stand by that.

The two I was hoping to have made leaps and bounds from last year were/ are Jones and Moore.

With Deeb being at 242 I think we have our other starting ILB next year right there. And man am I excited.

From presser:

On offensive line moves, Kelly says Ronnie Stanley to guard is a possibility. Appears to be the same case with Steve Elmer. "Clearly we know Christian Lombard can handle himself at the right tackle position."

It seems all of the offseason talk (from us, not staff) was about moving Lombard inside and Elmer or Stanley to RT, but listening to BK the past two days, I get the impression moving Elmer or Stanley to RG and keeping Lombard at RT is more likely. Either way I like it. The staff will find a way to get the best five on the field and if that means Hanratty at RG then so be it.

From what I've heard from Kelly and Hiestand is they really like Lombard at RT and don't want to mess with that. RG is in play.

......... lots of good news. Hope Coach isn't soft-soaping anything.

I liked these best:
1). all frosh came in able to join the workout regimen immediately which had never happened before;
2). "we are very deep at both inside and outside linebacker". {as far as the two-deep is concerned, that's correct, as we know. Are we SO deep that 2014 is also no big deal depth wise?};
3). "All our TEs can catch the ball". Someone joked about this, but I don't believe that Kelly would say it that flat if Niklas, Koyack, and Welch hadn't all upped their games.;
4). Coach says TJs best route-runner in the country --- YAY. Feels good to have my inordinate positive view of TJ confirmed. Maybe some IEs who "ho-hum" him will shut-up;
5). Cam McDaniel can play good college RB. Thanks BK. More shutting up. please;
6). OLine has it in their DNA --- coachspeak for "they're instinctively playing like 5 men // one mind". Hiestand's dream;
7). We'll score more due to competent QBing and "crushing defense". Yes and more yes;
8). Both starting corners are D-leaders on the field --- as are three linebacker positions: Spond, Shembo, and Foxabreese. Nix and Tuitt don't have to be;
9). Stanley and Elmer could break into the OLine --- WHOO --- get the supertalents in there where we can... RG?? Surprise, but they could do it. If Hanratty wins, then he's good.

What i wish I'd heard:
...... "Our safeties really look good. We can really count on them to sweep up all the back end problems of the defense, and Coach Diaco can release the Hounds upfront more." Alas, didn't hear that. This is the only thing I worry about with our defense.

We will need to be able to do this more often that we did last year...it comes with solid safety play. Like to see us go after more punts on special teams as well...

I thought his comments on the corners was telling in respect to the Russell vs. Wood debate we had on another thread a few weeks ago. I'm not saying Wood won't be given a chance to compete for a starting position, but it seemed to me that BK indicated the competition was more at that 3rd and 4th CB spots than at the #1 and #2.

agreed.. he was very adamant about returning 2 starters at the cornerback spot, and expected big things from KR

FWIW it appears the online ND roster has the updated measurements of the team:

Corey Robinson: 6'4.5, 205
Devin Butler: 6'1, 181
Rashad Kinlaw: 5'11, 182
Cole Luke: 5'11, 184
James Onwualu: 6'1, 215
Max Redfield: 6'1, 194
Isaac Rochell: 6'3.5, 280
Durham Smythe: 6'4.5, 235
Malik Zaire: 6'0, 208

Randoms:
Eilar Hardy: 5'11.5, 201
Ishaq Williams: 6'5.5, 261
Ben Koyack 6'5, 261
Ben Councell: 6'4.5, 254
KeiVarae Russell: 5'11, 190

Those were the main ones I noticed

lol, not one of those guys is as tall as their recruiting profiles indicate. I know ht/wt is often exaggerated, but maybe I give the recruiting services too much credit in validating heights at camps like the NFTC, The Opening, etc.

Rochell's is really the one that jumps out at me. He's a full inch and a half shorter than I thought and 15lbs heavier than last season which is to be expected. Maybe he's the answer to our "Who is going to replace Nix?" question.

Was about to comment on heights. Kinlaw is shorter than expected but Butler is as advertised.

Depends on the site for Kinlaw, Rivals listed 6'2, the rest said 5'11-6' I believe

Regardless it is always somehow inflated for most
