Is he gonna get his prodigious fifth star on the front page, or do we go by a certain recruiting site's ratings? (would assume 247 if that's the case?)
I'll add the fifth star.
Looks like he has lockjaw hands. We just need to pair him with one more big time recruit.
Nah. Just need to pair him with the Kevin Austin we were promised, need to get Kmet the ball and hope Mayer's his equal when his number's called and need Watts to be an excellent #2. That's all Clemson or Bama needs.
Well said. It obviously sucks losing some of these WR targets but context/perspective is a hell of a thing at times like these. I also think this time next year we're going to be talking about Wilkins, Lenzy, and/or Keys (especially Keys) much more favorably than we are now.

You took the words right out of my mouth. It is crazy how fast people seemed to have forgotten the 2018 receiver class. Shiny new toy syndrome is real in recruiting.
TBF, we can't keep that going. We needed 3 WRs this year and the hope is to maximize those spots. I believe with Johnson and Watts, we'll be doing exactly that.
I'd love to sign one more. If we can't get traction with our 1st group guys, then maybe we could offer the speedster from Illinois? He'd be a nice pairing with the rest of our offensive skill players.

I think it is kinda obvious that the staff is okay taking 2 receivers this cycle. Johnson and Watts would be a damn good duo as well. There is really no need for more than that because, after Claypool and Finke are gone, our veteran group will be the 2018 receiver class. Basically meaning that we'll be stocked for a while unless we have attrition.
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that we should or will stop at 2 WR's for the class. I was just pointing out that while some of the guys we've "missed" on at WR were better prospects than what we've brought in recently, we still have some guys that can eventually play. Next year those guys will be Juniors so a freshman playing over them is going to have to be damn good. I think the 3rd WR spot gets filled, in this class, just may not be before the season starts. Which is fine. Lastly, have to remember how much 2 TE sets we run these days. In those sets, there is usually only 2 WR's on the field. Just don't have the same need for numbers like when Kelly first got to South Bend.
I'm trying to figure out how we are going to get all the guys on the field. We got Young, Lenzy, Keys, Austin, Wilkins, Claypool, Finke, probably some guys I'm forgetting. Then the TE's. 2 receivers would be fine for this class. But I surely wouldn't turn away another speedster or 2.
We shouldn't be kicking the can down the road if we can avoid it. There is always attrition and there are players that don't pan out. What we are aiming for is 3-4 WRs capable of playing at a championship level.
Sure, we can stop at 2 now and call it good and rely on past recruiting classes but then we're putting a bit more pressure on 2021.
For sure, I don't disagree. I guess I'm talking more about a philosophical approach to recruiting. When you don't hit your ideal, then you're less prepared to absorb the blow when players transfer, medical or don't realize their full potential.
Yeah, we're good this year but Claypool and Finke are liking gone after this year. I would expect at least 1 WR transfer. It'd be great to add just a bit more depth so we're not hurting in 2021/22
He was ranked 8th best WR because . . . he did not take as many reps. Total BS.
