Pyne runs over to Jack after the touchdown, points his finger to Jack's chest. "That was for you." Jerry Goldsmith music swells in the background.

Unless he was putting 100% behind every throw, I think Pyne has a significantly stronger arm than Book. We tend to forget that Drew was a borderline 5 star as a sophomore / junior in HS and had offers from everywhere.

At his size why isnt he more of a duel threat athlete?
Couldn't he do some hill sprints or what?

Pretty sure he's a plus-athlete, I think he was a high 4.7 40 guy when we recruited him. He has escape ability, certainly more than Coan, but maybe he just has that pass first, pocket presence mentality unlike Ian.

Guys, Pyne will be a huge piece to this team. He will make everyone aroudn him better and he'll be prepared if/when his number is called. Think about how beat up a running QB can get

Eye black on and ready to rumble when the time comes. I like the relationship the three guys had this year and I expect Drew and Tyler to continue being a team. This is a tough game and you never know when the guy in front of you can go down.

2nd string QB has more direct value to the team than many starters. Look at what happened to Penn St when Clifford got hurt/playing hurt

I wouldn't mind some McGregor walking from time to time either.

Glad he is staying, if he had graduated that would make sense to transfer. For sure a Notre Dame kid.

I wish when Coan was struggling early on in the season, we would've got to see more of Pyne. I wish he would've got the start against UC. I really wanted to see what he could do on the field before giving the reins to Buch. But, at this point, I just think you have to go with Buch.

I think that if Pyne was the better option, he would've been the starter. Also, they're almost certainly going to have a competition between the 2 lol, and while I will continue to believe that Buchner is at worst the overwhelming favorite to win the job....if Pyne takes it he takes it.

In general, I wish Pyne would've got more burn so we would be able to discuss his play with more detail. Likely, we won't get that chance going forward.

But, to the bolded, that would assume that the coaches are right 100% of the time. To which they are not and admitted as much by benching Coan on multiple occasions. While Coan got better as the season went on, he was playing ass football for stretches.

So, at one point they did think Pyne was the better option. They just decided to do that too late against Cincy and it likely cost us the game. I wish they would've started that game with Pyne so we could see what he had.

I still think you're going to see Pyne out there first in Columbus and it's going to cause a lot of ND fans' heads to explode.

I think that was part of the whole, "coaching disaster" that was that Cincinnati game though. If Coan goes out in that 2nd half, I think ND wins that game tbqh.

I'm still 60/40 on this. I want to go with what you said above but I also haven't seen enough of Buchner to know if he the extreme upside everyone speaks of. We know he's an athlete but can he develop pocket awareness and the ability to checkdown or move to the 3rd/4th read.

I think Pyne has a ton of self-belief and I love that in a QB. His frame and arm strength are detractions but that doesn't often become a problem until you play a team where you need every option on the table .

Pyne has the lead in terms of QB play.
]
Buchner wins athleticism and arm strength off the bat. If he can pull even with Pyne in terms of QB plays during live/7v, etc, then he likely wins. So that is really the gamble you are playing. I think coaches who swing for the fences like Marcus Freeman likely do that with their players when a race is close.

I'd be inclined to bet Buchner if anyone was giving decent odds.

If Pyne starts my heart will be broken. I'll watch...but I'd be hurt.

Buchner has a higher ceiling
But Pynes ceiling is higher than Books imo.

I'm happy we have both
I’m curious. What makes you say that, about Pyne’s ceiling being higher than Book’s. In what little we’ve seen of Pyne they appear verrry similar players. Maybe Pyne has a smidge stronger arm, but not sure he has Book’s legs. Overall it seems pretty even.

I’m also glad we have both but if we want to move forward I really hope Buchner wins the job.

My two cents: everything (alas not enough) I saw about Drew Pyne said "This is a good Quarterback" and one with good on field "presence." I'm saying nothing about the Pyne/Buchner competition; just saying that in my eyes, Pyne is pretty good. Frankly, I saw way too little of Buchner to assess that "presence" issue.
