TJ Sheffield

247 - 90
Rivals - 5.7
ESPN - 84
ISD - 91
Offers: Ohio State, Stanford, Penn State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisville, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Purdue, Vanderbilt

So 16 power 5 offers including some pretty good ones in Ohio State and Stanford and ND. Jamie Uyeyama has him as a 4* prospect, likes him a lot, and has a Wes Welker ceiling for him. I think this is an excellent addition to the slot position. After seeing a guy like Equanimeous St. Brown not fight for the ball last year, it’s nice to see an addition of a tough-nosed spot guy who will fight for the ball and every yard on the field. If speed is his biggest fault then I think he’ll be fine. Maybe body by Balis and being around Braden Lenzy will give some extra burst in 2-3 years. Overall, I think he’s a good addition to the class!

still no bat signal...

Kelly may be enjoying some family time during the dead period. With practice beginning in three weeks or so and a full season after that, now is the time for most of the coaches to spend time with their families before the demands of the 2018-2019 season take over.

Yup, I thought about that when NDdomer2 posted that he saw Long and wife in Vegas.
When did the dead period start?

When did the dead period start?

June 25th - July 24th. Last week of July is a week of getting a few more kids on campus before August training camp/recruiting dead period. Pretty sure that aside from phone calls the coaches are all doing family time for the short 4 weeks that they get before the next one comes during Xmas time.

So we saw plenty of bat signs from BK during the dark period, just not in this case.

Yea. Probably wasn’t acknowledging commitment until the dude completely shut it down. Hopefully we see one tomorrow.

If what the kid says is true, it looks like Alexander f'd up in accepting the commitment.

Thats a mighty "IF" tho.

I was kind of hoping they would communicate their plans to him and let him stay committed until he "flipped" to a different school so it didn't come out we didn't want him. It sounds like he handled it in a very mature way though. I do wonder what made him want to commit after not visiting for several months and not even really being in contact with the coaches.

It sounds as though they were not expecting it at all though, at least not at this time. They would have likely accepted his commitment earlier in the process and so in this confusion, Del congratulated him, but knew he needed to ask the higher ups if this was to be expected/accepted. Turns out it was not and so Del had to backtrack and apologize.

That's my theory at least.

Eh... idk. He's essentially calling out and blaming Alexander.

I'm not really sure who to blame here. Might be one of those situations where no one really did wrong by anyone else. Notre Dame stopped contacting him from what we've heard, but it's not like they call kids up and say they're moving on, most kids would have taken the no contact as "message received." But Sheffield might be naive enough that he legitimately might have thought he had a committable offer and Alexander was caught off-guard.

Or maybe everyone was acting in bad faith, and Sheffield knew the offer was slipping away and jumped, and Alexander said okay knowing he'd jettison him down the road. Truth is probably somewhere in between.

IDK, if Alexander accepted the commitment, it should have been honored. I know stuff happens in recruiting, but if what he says is true, pretty shitty on ND's part. If you communicate a firm offer, and don't rescind, it should be considered an offer. Recruiting is at times dirty, and kids flake all the time, but ND should not.

Looks to me like the kid was truthful and classy. He could have bashed Alexander and ND, but instead said thanks and that he accepted it as God's plan. Nothing wrong with that. If it's the truth, ND deserves the bad optics.

The part that I'm curious about is his tweet on July 8th, two days after he committed, that he was no longer going to take visits and he's 100% committed.

Was this in response to someone he talked to at Notre Dame or because of backlash he was receiving? If it was in response to talking to someone from ND, this is even more screwed up.

A recruit puts you in his top 4 and says he's committing on 7/6/18. As a coaching staff you have to have a plan. Even if it seems unlikely, what if he tries to commit to us. What is our response etc etc.

It's a fluid business, but smart business always has clear plans and contingency. This whole thing sounds boggled.

I'm thinking both TJ & ND are at fault. TJ saw things trending the wrong way on all fronts and didn't want to end up at a lower P5 program, so he calls to say he's committing. Del probably said something like, "That's great, let me tell Coach Kelly and I'll get back with you." In the meantime TJ makes his announcement to the world and IE says, WTF?

Most kids would not be mature enough to handle a situation like this how he has.

My (uninformed) guess is ND is tried to use the visits as a pretext for telling him they couldn't accept his offer. Sheffield then (cluelessly, strategically, idk) responded "fine, I won't take the visits," which forced our hand.
