By the way, per Loy last week, there was a lot of chatter on the 247 Aggie board that Mertz would visit this past weekend, and from well-connected sources apparently. Obviously that didn't happen. https://247sports.com/college/notre...g-Irish-recruiting-scoop-for-June-6-118847342

Which, coincidentally, sounds a lot like, say, rumors for a month that Mertz would visit Notre Dame this upcoming weekend, rumors that don't appear to be playing out at all.

Reasons for confidence. He’d be our QB in this class, if we offered when we offered Cade. He’s stayed in regular concract with the staff. Speaks very highly of Rees. Offensive fit.

At this point, I’d ride this out for a little longer. With Phil J and Drew Pyne lined up, we can afford to take time big game hunting. Mertz is a calculated shot to take. If we miss, we can get a quality program fit. We’re Staying in contact with quite a few.

As long as there are plausible backup plans good enough to contribute to the program, I agree. Ride this out a little longer and see what happens. It just feels a bit like we’re focused pretty heavily on Mertz lately, with little outward sign that he’s coming to ND, while other guys get scooped up.
Mostly I’m just strongly of the opinion we need a credible QB in every class and I’d hate to see us scrambling for one late.

I thought we had a little time to ride this thing out and still have a shot at Calzada since he just recently blew up. But I got this feeling that we probably can't wait much longer on him. If Mertz visits Wiscy again this week, I think we have to move on.

From my follow post on the topic, sounds like things could move a lot faster than I was previously aware of with Brendan Clark. Also, we are in contact with some other guys.

Have to keep in mind that not many thought very much of Ian Book when he was brought in. And he’s proven he can win games.

Book and Clark have pretty comparable rankings but Clark's offer list > Book's.

I like Clark's film, but his timing of decommitting and scheduling new commitment date has the Clemson feels since it was post visit.

However, I'm not too concerned with QB recruiting. They will get a kid they think can win us games.

At this point it seems as though 247 knows they'll get more clicks on articles if they tag Graham Mertz to it so they are just putting him with anything QB-related. This rumor could be plausible, but its just ridiculous the amount of visits this kid is presumed to be making.

It's because he's talking with other programs. There is a zero percent chance that this is some grand conspiracy by 247 and it writers, of all these programs. Now, he could just be telling people what they want to hear. Or, he could be lying to Wisconsin and some writers, but he is certainly communicating with programs about visits.

I have three theories.

1. He sucks.
2. He's basically a good guy, but a people pleaser who tells people what they want. The sort of kid who, say, commits to a school after only getting two offers very early in the process.
3. One of the parents wants him to open up his recruitment, and they're the "source close to Mertz" hyping him for other schools and reporters, even though he's not particularly interested in flipping.

I know Loy has hinted on the forums that he'll have quite the story to tell once this is all over.

You hear this every single year. Does Loy actually ever come through with any of the "juicy" stories?

The last two years, 247, has done a BTS, post NSD. It’s not quite as juicy as might be expected. But, there are always a few interesting tidbits in there. Though he doesn’t usually divulge the whole story, more so just that it happened.

the 2019 QB class is so mediocre there's going to be a hell of a lot of flipping going on. Mertz in a different class would be fought over by the likes of Indiana, Iowa State, Northern Illinois. I am guessing a few years ago his family never expected Power 5 programs to be fighting over him.

I do think the 19’ QB class, as of today, is below average. But I completely disagree on Mertz. He’s a high 4 star QB in any cycle. He has almost everything you want in a QB. Only slight might be athleticism at the next level.

In his first year at Blue Valley North, he took them to their first 6A football state title, ever (previously only won 4 playoff games total), by beating the two time defending champions. Literally winning the game for BV on their last drive. He threw for 3684 yds and 45 tds to just 6 int’s on the season. Kid can ball.

Rare hot take from dublin. NIU? Come on now. This guy's been Top 20 P5 back to when ND worked him out and he lost the offer to McNamara and Morris. If he would have physically developed a year earlier, he may have gotten the offer.

But he couldn't beat out Notre Dame's future 2nd baseman at Miege and transferred. No italics.

Still wish some analyst would address how his relationship is with Armstrong, Grunhard, Jackson and Putz. The fact that I've never seen any Twitter back and forth between Mertz and the Miege/ND guys is curious.

I may have exaggerated a little bit, but i think deep down I'm not too bothered about this kid and whether he picks ND or not.

Really, the fact that Loy telegraphs there's something weird going on behind-the-scenes is all that matters for our purposes.

Did find this.

Thx guys.

Cross that off the reason why he's hasn't flipped to ND.

So that leads me to... Transferred from Miege to get out of 2x POTY QB's shadow. Why sign with ND and enter the shadow of the most anticipated ND QB since Powlus?

It was probably a little more than a little bit ;)

And FWIW, I won't be bothered either, but that's not because he isn't very talented. It's because we have 18' and 20' QB's that are too very talented.

Clausen also predicted multiple national titles and had that stretch hummer college hall of fame thing....but point taken.

Agreed.

Crus, I gotta say that I think the hype around Jimmy Clausen was far higher than Phil J. I'd be surprised if Phil J doesn't win more games. But, Jimmy was THE next great Irish QB.

Jimmy's hype was at another level.

I was on campus for both QBs. Clausen's hype was much higher than Crist's.

J-Claw's junior season was unreal. If he had a defense behind him, that could have been a 11-1 type season.

I won't argue that... I didn't mean to imply he was up there with Clausen. But Rivals did have Crist as a 5 star and the #2 pro style QB (to Blaine Gabbert). I guess he was the #3 QB overall adding in Terrelle Pryor.
