Great segment. I'm not a huge fan of Oliver's comedy but he really has been shedding light on some truly overlooked topics.
Another issue w/r/t public defenders is attracting top talent. I know a ton of students at my law school who are all about public service. But then they realize how much big law firms pay first years and then take a look at their student loan balance...
The federal govt and some schools offer repayment assistance for those who enter into these types of low-paying legal jobs. These tend to not quite be enough, however.
