Also having a ball-hawking safety is a more rare talent than a good WR, JuJu's just good at football.
So I remember seeing this on a tweet or something and it got me thinking. With Avery Davis learning the position and Shaun Crawford coming off three major leg surgeries.
Why doesn't Kyle Hamilton just come in and play right away at nickel? He's not playing over Gillman or Elliot this year because they might start off as preseason All Americans. Sorry if this has been discussed but it just makes a ton of sense to me.

He's definitely expect to contribute immediately is my understanding, but likely in a backup role
So why not just come in and start at nickel?
Or maybe just play defense with 3-4 safeties? I mean Texas does it and Hamilton reminds me so much of Cayden Sterns

Well, I certainly think he'll be in the discussion but he's not an EE so saying "why not just start at Nickel" for a kid that will have been on campus for just a couple of months, might be more to ask than what you're making it out to be.
I’m sure if Kyle Hamilton is a good Nickel corner then he’ll play. Problem is, nickel is a different position than Free Safety and fairly significantly different than free safety. Just because you’re a crazy impressive athlete who’s likely position is free safety doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good nickel. Houston Griffith was a good example of being a pretty terrible nickel. Idk what goes into playing nickel well but if Kyle Hamilton is close to or somehow better than Avery Davis and Shaun Crawford then I think he should start day 1. I just want the best player to play nickel corner. Right now idk who that is cause of all the question marks with Avery Davis (position change) and Shaun Crawford (health). If everything is even I’d guess a healthy Shaun Crawford would be the best nickel but there’s no guarantee at all there.
I mean I understand what you are saying. But are we just giving that to Avery Davis after one round of spring ball? Position seems widdeeee open anyways.

I don't see why this has to be mutually exclusive. You can create competition for Davis at Nickel without the expectations that Hamilton is the starting Nickel against UL. It just sounds very casual to say, "why not just have Hamilton start at Nickel right away." When in reality, that's not a casual statement. Hopefully, Hamilton is part of a competitive situation at Nickel that includes multiple options.

How many true freshmen have started on offense or defense in game one during the Brian Kelly years? And of those (if there are any), how many started the first game of their true freshman year without early enrolling?
The odds are against Hamilton or any other freshmen making a significant contribution on offense or defense in game one, especially those who were not available for Spring practice. Perhaps some will see action on special teams or as a sub for a few plays, but I doubt you will see any of them starting the game on the 1st team offense or 1st team defense.

What is the word on Crawford’s health? (Was discussed on another thread that he might 5Y somewhere else for more playing time. But also that he’s too banged up for us to rely on).

I personally hate how they try to put players who are not nickel corners at the nickel just to try to get them on the field. Look at how they're ruining Houston Griffith as they keep moving him around. Recruit a player to play nickel and keep him there. Avery Davis and Tariq Bracy fit the profile for nickel corners. Play them at nickel, keep the corners at corner and the safeties at safety. Hamilton can be the first man in after Gilmin or Elliot and be in line to start in year 2.

I agree, moving Harrison Smith around certainly hurt him.
Arguably it did. Guy is now an all pro with crazy athleticism and was a mediocre starter for much of his career at ND because the coaches tried to move him around a bunch and hurt his development until he began to put it together his senior year.

Or you could say they moved him until they found his perfect position. If only they would have realized he is a down hill safety from the beginning.
