Start him next year and deal with the growing pains. The chances that he could do worse than what Wimbush did this season are slim to none.

I love the potential of Phil too, but I think some are overlooking how great of a “player” BW is.
Of course he had some games where his throwing was putrid, and it probably cost us the game, but he had more games where his running ability was PHENOMENAL and surely gave us wins. Remember, if you put a QB in who’s not only going through growing pains as a thrower, BUT also isn’t the runner that Wimbush is, that’s going to affect our entire running game, in a bad way! (I understand Phil is a good runner as well, but to the extent of BW?, not so sure)
I remember being blown awayyy by BW’s higschool film as well. How come we are willing to deal with Phil’s growing pains, but not BW’s?? I mean he’s only had what, 11 starts?
Again, I am insanely excited for the future with Phil...... but I just dont think rushing into his career helps more than trying to let our coaches do what they should be able to do, improve our existing qb
This is exactly what I don't want from our QB. He shouldn't have to rely solely on his legs to get the job done; at that point, you pretty much have a running back playing QB. BW is concerning because he is in his 3rd year at Notre Dame and his fundamentals/footwork is still trash, borderline pathetic, and something you'd see from a high school QB or true frosh. Not from someone who is almost 21. If he failed to improve his technique and fundamentals in his first 3 seasons, why would we think that he's all of a sudden turn the corner? I hope it happens, but I think its unlikely. At Notre Dame, we shouldn't have to say "oh man, I sure our 3rd year QB can throw a 7 yard slant and not throw the ball so high that our 6'5" receiver can't catch it today"; stuff like that should be automatic and should be able to be done in his sleep.
I'm #TeamPhil because I think, at the very minimum, he'll be able to match BW's 2017 production. There's a 99% chance that he's a better thrower and he doesn't need to run a 4.5 to be successful in the offense. He's not as fast as BW, but I'd say his speed is equivalent to Kizer and Kizer did just fine in the run game. Phil probably won't be any worse than BW at reading defenses either. At this point, I just think there is more good than bad if they went Phil>BW.
It is kinda sad. We won 9 games with a QB who couldn't hit the ocean if he was standing on the beach. We probably would've won 11-12 games with a QB who was half decent at throwing the ball.
Anybody else remember spring and summer practice when all anybody could talk about wS wim ush's accuracy and ball placement? Kid has the talent, it just did not translate into games this year. I feel like part of that was the game justmoved too fast for him this year. I really believe an offseason of contjnued work and film study can help him learn from his mistakes and alow things down for him. I think it would be fair to attribute at least part of his poor delivery to just not being comfortable and getting his body in sync and in the right time/place to make the throws due to his indecision and identifying opportunities a split second slow. I think Phil will be a great ine at ND, but think he would be better suited redshirting, working on kmproving his strength and putting on good weight, and learning te nuances of college football for a year or two before being thrown in the fire. Lets exhibit some patience and see what kind of progress BW makes this year with a year of experience to draw from in his learning.

Actually no. What I remember coming away from the Blue Gold game was jaysus BW has accuracy issues whereas Book looked solid in comparison.
But excuses were made, which seemed reasonable at the time, and everyone expected BW to improve over time. Well unfortunately he regressed over time.
And when you consider defences stacked the box and gave him the best opportunity possible to make completions, his passing regressed even worse. Troubling to say the least.
I actually do not recall anybody talking up his accuracy. Everybody knew he had a big arm, but mostly everybody was in wait and see mode in terms of his touch. Well, we waited and we saw that his accuracy is ass. I agree with arrowryan, he's been at ND for 3 years now and his mechanics are just awful. I don't see any reason to think it will get any better, especially with a QB coach as inexperienced and unproven as Rees. He's a fantastic athlete who we need on the field and we should treat him like OSU treated Braxton Miller. Let Book and Phil battle it out in the fall.
Are they?
There should be no Book vs Phil battle. ND is not Bama. ND MUST have a Deshaun Watson to get to an NCAA championship. ND can't do it with a proverbial game manager like Bama can, they don't have a roster full of impact players at every position like the Tide. They have to win like Clemson did last year, well coached .89XX roster with a few impact players... one being the QB. It's ND's only chance.
Hopefully Phil is a 4 year player. 2021 is the year the schedule is most promising. 2019 is a throw away for anyone including Bama. 2020 is much easier, it's only a 9.99 on the brutal scale instead of an 11 like '19.
Yeah, they are...is that even a point of debate? His feet are out of whack every time he throws the ball which messes everything up.
And I agree with you there, but it's still a good idea to let them battle it out. Make Phil have to work for it.

Your argument was fine until you acted like our quarterback did nothing in the 9 wins we did get.
Hot take.....Wimbush is in the heisman conversation next year.

Maybe I eat crow, Wimbush has the physical ability to be great. (As does PJ) he just seemed overwhelmed this year. Maybe the QB coach and OC are in part to blame. Seems PJ could suffer the same. Who knows? Happy New Year
Controversially, my opinion as someone who knows OLine better than QB (so, thankfully it doesn't count):
1). Start Wimbush as if all things are happy vs LSU.
2). If not playing scared, and instead seeming decisive, let him finish the game.
3). If indecisive and threatening to lose the game, let Book give it a try.
4). State that the competition is open for next year, and give Book LOTS of chances in the Spring.
5). If Wimbush is actually looking like he's turned the Tyrod Taylor corner, then go with him; if not, and if Jurkovec looks raw, start the season with Book and ease Jurkovec into the starter role.
Chance of this happening: zero.
Chance of it being the best sequence: not zero.
Who the hell is running this practice? You got a DE going lid to lid with a QB?
That's pretty disturbing and now I have to go full juvenile and hope Parsons blows a knee out for gooning on the Franchise.
