See the past 5 years of ND offseasons...

I still don't see the scenario where we get far past 20 scholarships. We have 13 players sure to leave:

1. Van Gorder
2. Smythe
3. Luatua
4. McGlinchey
5. Byrne
6. Bivin
7. Nelson
8. Mokwuah
9. Cage
10. Trumbetti
11. N. Morgan
12. Martini
13. Perry (already gone)

We have one guaranteed academic casualty:

14. Stepherson or Freshman TBD

We have maybe 4 guys that have a solid chance of being gone next year:

15. Mack
16. St. Brown
17. Canteen (if he doesn't produce)
18. Weishar

Then you get to highly speculative force outs, transfers or early exits:

19. Barajas
20. A. White
21. D.J. Morgan
22. Tiassum or MDT
23. Boudreaux
24. McIntosh (not if we want a shot at Kenny)
25. D. Williams (transfer) or J. Adams (pro)
26. Bonner (turn away for fifth year)

I suppose its possible, but that seems like a ton of turnover even for Notre Dame.

Edit: I may have just convinced myself its possible.

We have 3 open.

It looks like only these guys are out of eligibility:

4) Mike McGlinchey
5) Hunter Biven
6) Durham Smythe
7) Tyler Luatua
8) Daniel Cage
9) Jonathan Bonner
10) Andrew Trumbetti
11) Greer Martini
12) Nyles Morgan
13) Dru Tranquil

And this guy is going to the NFL, barring a serious injury:

14) Quentin Nelson

So that is 14.

I expect the following to also go pro, barring season ending injuries:

15) Josh Adams
16) EQ St. Brown
17) Alize Jones

These guys qualify for 5th year, are likely to come back, and are keeps for sure:
- Sam Mustipher
- Alex Bars
- Nick Watkins

Assume we get 2 transfers/retirements from underclassmen:
18)
19)

So if we only offer 1 of these guys, we are at 25:

- Jay Hayes
20) Tyler Newsome
21) Peter Mokwuah
22) Monty VanGorder
23) Jimmy Byrne
24) Nic Weisher
25) Tyler Luatua

Stop polluting DJ's thread with what if scenarios. There are a MILLION ways they could get to a 25 man class. It's ND.

Which means ND will pursue the most readily available options that dont get us to 25.

If he tested well enough for an offer, I'd be happy to add him to this secondary class. If we just add Houston Griffith to this group, I believe all of our needs are met although I wouldn't look down on an additional cb/s prospect.

If we hang on to our current commits and add Johnson and Griffith, that has to be our best secondary class....in 20 years? Definitely the best since I've been following recruiting.

To get the thread back on track. I'm not sure this as much of a slam dunk as originally thought. No inside info on this but from his interviews with BGI and 247, he sounds like he is enjoying the attention and wants to see who else is going to offer before shutting it down. Who knows, maybe we can lock him up at II, but it sounds like he might ride this out a bit.

I wish I was a 247 member for a day. I'd love to ask Loy who he thinks is better CB, DJ Johnson or Greg Newsome.

which is fine. Id rather get in now and let him ride it out, then him ride it out, us try and get in later and it be a too little too late type of thing.

We still seemed to have played this correctly, which is nice to hear.

Sounds like the kid that couldn't get any dates until one hot chick digs him. He's all over her until the other chicks notice he landed a babe and they want to see what all the fuss is about. Now he's getting attention and wants to play the field for a while.

Loy's not going to publicly compare two players and say which is worse.

Of course he wouldn't. But there's no reason to throw a first team all state kid under the bus. He could simple say, "I like them both a lot. I like Newsome's length, I like Johnson's speed. Both are 4 stars, If I had to grade them out for what ND needs I'd go Johnson a 9, Newsome an 8.5."

Or something along those lines.

An important bit of info I have not seen escape from the paid site's iron curtain.

DJ's defensive coordinator / secondary coach, Anthony Dean played at Iowa in the 90's.
