That sucks. We need 3-4 more bodies in the defensive backfield and you won't take a 4 star that's local??? Keep chasing those guys who have to choose between Ball State and ND and see where that gets ya.

I hope there is a fit reason, because I agree with you.

But IF it's true that the staff wasn't pushing, you know that has to mean something in this situation, because they obviously know their need.

Yikes is right. McGrone is enough of a kick to the nuts, I struggle to explain how we lost a recruiting battle for an Indiana kid to fucking Iowa.

They didn't.

He missed his window of opportunity to commit an later underwhelmed at Invasion. (full disclosure---> he had a tweaked ankle that he aggravated at the camp) Since then, ND re-evaluated and has been pushing hard for the GA corners, especially Burton and are maybe hard at work on the down low on some other guys out east where Elko is more involved.

Two of ND's corners for 2018 could currently be committed to other schools.

I like his film, especially how he attacks the ball and how he tackles. I'm not sure who I'd take between him and Burton, I'd probably take both, but oh well.

If this is true, I question their thinking. Houston's out. Gervin's not coming back. Gordon's a longshot. Even if Burton turns out to be vastly underrated, he's still only one CB and we need more. These guys out east better be worth passing on an in-state 4-star, and they better be more real than my middle school girlfriend in Canada.

Well now you've just piqued my interest...

This kid was also hunting for bigger offers. When he announced his top two, he still said he was open to other schools. Things could always change but I think it's obvious there wasn't a big push from the staff.

I personally would've pushed but the staff must have some kind of plan.

Don't get hung up on * ratings for CB. Really tough position to get right outside the top 3 or 5.

Case in point....Athlon Preseason All Americans at CB this year...

1st team CB's - 5*, 3*
2nd team CB's - 4*, 3*
3rd team CB's - 3*, 3*
4th team CB's - just one player, didn't have a D1 offer

Not saying Johnson won't be a stud, but being a 4* as a CB is not as significant as it is at other positions.

I think they are focusing on Donte Burton, Telly Plummer and Bracy.

I brought it up elsewhere on the web that Bracy may be the most important recruit ND has right now.

They need a DB = has had 11 INT's in last 2 seasons

They want a RB = has 2000 yds in the last 2 seasons

They need a WR = had 1000 yds plus last season.

One stop shop for a 4.5 flat ATH that produces.

I would take any of the three listed over Johnson. The fact that he's a local player means nothing. I want the best players regardless of geography.

And I think this goes back to Swarbrick's interview with Sampson this week. They want to find the right fits for the football program, not just academically or socially but whether or not they can play.

When they filled the DL with Dew-Treadway, Tiassum and Taylor a few years back that is an example of bad fit football wise. That in turn creates scholarship black holes and depth issues when these guys can't even contribute. Johnson might be the same way and why they are slow playing him.

I am also willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Mike Elko. I think he knows exactly what he's looking for in a player at each position in the scheme. And I don't think he cares about stars or geography.

I mostly agree, but I do think there's something to locking down your backyard. When you create a general sense that the best kids in Indiana end up at Notre Dame, maybe you don't miss out on Werner, Hippenhammer, Yeast, etc. And maybe taking, say, Julius Brents helps down the road when you're trying to land his teammate David Bell.

I think a good rule is that when two recruits are more or less equal, you favor the local kid.

Football probably had little to do with Julius not having an offer.

Does he get an offer from Urban?

What sayeth the board?

I'll go no.

If he does get an offer, he won't commit because it's not committable.

There has to be a point in which OSU stops/slows down recruiting for this cycle right? I mean, they have 15 already and they has such a great class last year.

I doubt it. Elston was the one that saw him and offered and its sounding more and more possible that the rest of the staff was a little underwhelmed with him at II, even taking into account the ankle injury. Sounds like he has an open door to ND but they aren't pushing for him like some on here think they should. And again, it's not like Elko is a lazy recruiter, so if he's not pushing, then maybe there is something to it.

No way he gets an offer from Urban.

I think 99% of their fan base was surprised when Sevyn Banks was allowed to commit because of how the numbers were looking, and that was back in April.

It turns out that Banks might be way underrated, so Urban knew what he was doing by letting him in, but I don't think they'd crunch the numbers or pretend they have room for a guy like Johnson (yet).

Hope he did, but what a weird video to play with that caption. That is not what I consider flashing. But Wiltfong is now the "hype" man at 247.

No doubt, I was thinking he must have embedded the wrong vid or something. That looked like the No Star Showcase right there.

So three weeks in which the staff will do nothing and chase other CBs who commit to other schools without even visiting.

We. Need. Bodies. I like that the staff's swinging for the fence, but with ~3 spots to fill and Gervin/Griffith out, it confounds me that we wouldn't lock in at least one.

Since I'm the spokesman for the Sign the local guys early Society, I feel it's my duty to say... Pass.

ND has to let Bracy, Burton and Mitchell play out with early OV's. Nobody has been impressed with DJ when he's in the presence of 4 star players. The athleticism here has to worry you. His feedback from OSU's FNL was dismal.

Another thing I will remind everyone here, I can provide a long list of '18 CB's that Elko has been on since his Wake days When he jumps back in with an ND offer, doors will open.

I hate to say I'm not worried because being behind in evals & offers bugs the batsh!t out of me but I know Elko has this under control. He pulled JOK and JGH out of a hat in a month. I can only guess what he'll do to Duke, UVa, UNC, GT, Vandy and Wake's offer lists when he decides he wants to go shopping in their aisles.

In Elko I trust even if his boss is a bust.

We don't need bodies. We need good players. When you start adding bodies you end up with guys like Mokwuah, Tiassum and MDT. No thanks.

Word is Christian Johnson CB from Derik Allen's team may visit for the Georgia game with Allen. Very athletic, huge upside. Problem is he's committed to Michigan St. where both parents are alums.
