Yup. THEORY TIME: If Notre Dame wants its football team to be generally compatible with the academic and social/religious nature of the school, it just can't recruit like Ohio State and Alabama. I hate to say it--and it could be aided by PEDS--but the Stanford/Harbaugh model is the way to go:

Recruit tough, hard-working kids who are a good fit for your schools. Play TOUGH, MEAN, SMART football. Once you start winning, the big fish will come on their own.

I thought this was the direction ND was going--despite popular perception and the Ls, Stanford hasn't really out-toughed ND in the Kelly era. Its been all close games since Luck left. Kelly was actually known known for 4th quarters victories up until last year. But things definitely got WAY, WAY off track with BVG, which I think trickled into the rest of the program.

can't be tough when your S+C program is a bag of shite under Longo

NO DOUBT. But it just makes no sense to me that we made such vast improvements in 4th quarter play in the early Kelly years, and it fell off a cliff last year.

I truly think that something changed. We were never the best in that area, but it certainly was not 7 straight years of mediocrity in the weight room.

i think Longo might ave lit a fire when he arrived but gradually over time the kids either lost interest or the program became really sloppy

Could it be his illness kept him from investing mentally and physically, this the drop off?

possibly and perhaps BK's loyalty to him stopped him from stepping in and realising the S+C program was failing

I'd be quite pleased. In fact, I've been on here quite a few times saying that I'd like the staff to offer and take one from the second tier group, as soon as they find the right fit. That list also includes Hampton, Hallett, Birdsong, etc. However, my point is, we can still do that and the staff is simply going about it in a calculated manner, which I am completely ok with, because it's May 4th. This is quite literally their first viewings of some of these kids in person. So, no need to freak out or compare it to previous cycles.

The goal should be to take this time of year, to make sure we find the best fits from that group. Then put together an order of importance from said group, offer accordingly, and hopefully accept commitments as they come. It shouldn't be to fire out offers site unseen and take whoever wants in first, because again, it's the beginning of May, and the staff hasn't seen all of them workout in person, gotten to meet family in person, and essentially get to know them on a deeper level.

Elko is very big on personality traits ultimately affecting the productivity of the prospect. That takes time, and at the beginning of May, what we have is time. We also have a staff that is actively recruiting.

Yeah I agree no need to panic at this point. Just pointing out if you would be happy with that in February, what would it hurt to lock them up now. (If possible of course)

I just think most people have seen how it plays out when you slow play these kinds of kids, which is why the anxiety is there on not offering.

If staff really does pull in Griffith im not sure I care who the other two are as long as you hang on to Allen and Gervin.

Precisely why freaking out about offers on May 3rd was a bad idea.

Good offer and hopefully we can make a move here.

You're right, I'm just over-articulating my belief that the staff needs to change course from its prior strategy. Looks like they may be, as you believe.

Commit already. It's been a ghost town since Derrick Allen. Let's get some MO going.

Out of touch Koon?

Not out of tune, I just don't remember who our last commit was, but I know it seemed like we had all of the momentum in the country, and it's been a while and has been silent since. The kids tweeting "you won't believe who's next" teasers never seem to come true. Let's get a pick up, it's Friday for Christ's sake.

We have 7 composite 4*'s after posting a 4-8 season and Irish Invasion (one of our biggest recruiting weekends) hasn't even happened yet. We also only have eight scholarships left. For the time being, we should be focusing on holding on to what we've got and finding some hidden gems during spring evals a la Chase Claypool, not pressuring someone to commit for the sake of recruiting momentum.

Oh ye of little faith. You've got 11 more commits coming tween now and NSD... if not a full class of 25.

Serious question, can you outline the scenario where we have 25 scholarships available for next season (without forcing players off the team against their will)?

Ooops, sorry Montgomery VanGorder. Have a nice day.
Good job, good effort Jimmy Byrne.
Oh no, Nicco Ferritta just beat the sh!t out of someone in the parking lot. Welp, good luck you.
Chris Finke, 1,597 yds, 28 TDs, projected 1st rounder to the Patriots, thanks for the good times.
Deon McIntosh finds himself buried on the roster, deuces.
ESB's dad starts his own shoe company selling at $600 a pair, forces ESB to go pro.
(probably going pro anyways)

Of course this probably won't happen but crazier sh!t has occurred.

Easy:

One or both of Alize and ESB declare after this year.
Stepherson decides to transfer
At least one player, if not two, are declared ineligible and immediately transfer
A few 5th years aren't asked back because their positions are loaded

**No insider knowledge but just some reasonable darts to throw at the wall. Out of all of them, I hope Stepherson is suiting up this fall for ND. I won't be crushed but he really seems like a key piece to our offense.

Steph really needs to play to break open the offense. That guy was way too good as a freshman last year to do this to himself
