Because we recruit safeties poorly, and not as well as corners. Because he's really big and going to add some weight. Because we don't have an elite safety on the team, or committed. Because Clemson thinks he's a LB, etc. Did I answer it?

He doesn't have to add weight. He's already safety-size, which is part of my point. But my bigger point is that we land CBs easier than Safeties, so when we get a legit safety, I hope we keep him there.

Okay, which is it?

Okay, which is it?

He's going to add weight =/ He NEEDS to add some weight.

The first part of that equation is my assumption that most high school players put on some weight naturally in college.

In regards to his stars, his size, hi speed and his position:

His OP was last updated just one month ago. His fall from 5 stardom happened since then. He initially earned the 5 star rating because of his ability to cover. Did he lose that ability or did the fear of him "growing out of" the position scare the analysts off? He might not be a 5 star now, but he was and if his coverage skills are as good as we hope, he could certainly regain them. I added the current R&R's to las month's R&R's for comparison on the OP last night. Here's the update post from 1-12-17:

Measured in at The Opening Atlanta last spring at 6-2, 206. That's before his Jr. year. That's Jaylon Smith size at the same time. He might be one of the best CB's in the country but he's trending to other another position. Scout and Rivals have started ranking him as a Safety. Dad was a 6-4 PG for Army.

Rankings: 1-12-17

247 Comp:.. :s::s::s::s::s: ..... #3 CB ..... #23 OA ..... .9849 rating

247: ............ :s::s::s::s: ......... #3 CB ..... #27 OA ...... 96
Rivals: ......... :s::s::s::s: ......... #3 S ....... #36 OA ...... 6.0
Scout: ......... :s::s::s::s: ......... #4 S ....... #44 OA
ESPN: .......... :s::s::s::s: ......... #5 CB .... #48 OA ...... 84

His size and how that relates to his position: As it said above, he measured in at The Opening-Atlanta at 6-2, 206. 6-2, 206 is nearly identical to Jaylon Smith his Jr. year and Su'a Cravens his Sr. year. I'm sure he's gonna hang on to CB as long as he can which might be forever. Maybe he's just that good technically.

His speed. He didn't run a 40 at the Opening. His best posted 100 on Athletic.net is just a 12.18. Troy Pride and Jafar Armstrong are 10 second guys. This is by no means gospel but it's data. For comparison, Su'a Cravens ran a pedestrian 4.69 at the Draft combine.

His position. I think DA will tell you he's a CB first but he did tweet that he's a safety and a nickle too. I think what DA is saying is he's a LOS cover guy and wants to cover regardless of where he lines up. I don't think he sees himself as a classic centerfielder FS. Elko's system seems to be a perfect fit for his skill set even IF he keeps growing and ends up 6-4 like Dad because there's a place for him to use his coverage skills other than old school OLB.

If this kid stays committed and does special things at ND, I think it will change the perception for ND, and possibly lead to further kids from the south going to South Bend. Huge commit...

I don't think Pat plays at 220. I know he had some weird health issue. I also don't think it's fair to compare Allen to a genetic freak. But I understand what you are trying to say. I think we are alright at corner. Would love to see him play a role that Jalen Ramsey played as a freshman and that was where he lined up where he wanted and made plays.

ND doesn't have a problem in the south. There's 10 or so guys from Florida on the roster now and 3.5 more on the way this fall. What ND has had a problem with is Georgia.

Look at the roster and see how many players these 71 Georgia offers produced since '14.

Answer = 1 player, Punter, Tyler Newsome is all you have to show for the efforts.

Georgia is not a 100% SEC state like AL, MS, LA. If they are going to invest that much effort and resources their they have to bring out similar % of players as they do in FL on a per offer basis.

He purposely played at 220 this season. He didn't come into the league that big and he packed on muscle in hopes that it would keep him healthier and help him against big, physical WR's.

10 players from Florida out of 85? My point was since they arent getting the California kids like they used to, or the Texas kids, with the amount of talent in the south, and to compete for national championships, I would like to see 30% of their roster made up of kids from the south.

Currently 37% of the 2017 roster is from the South.

Wow, great addition.

Who was the last player we picked up this early from Georgia? Who? oh....um....this should turn out well.

ND is an insurance policy until I see his letter faxed in. Anytime we get a top 100 player from a Southern state not named Florida, I'll consider the commitment suspect until the ink has begun to dry.

If he sticks, amazing pickup because he'll surely be competing for minutes immediately.

I sometimes get things cattywampus. I guess it doesn't matter what position Derrik plays.

I went over some stuff on the back end of Elko's defense, and players often change between positions, in consecutive plays of a series. This is apparently one of the major aspects Elko uses to disguise his defenses.

So when they (Derrik and his dad) say Derrik was told he would play corner, that means corner safety hybrid. Which was exactly what Elko needed in this class.

Sorry I added to a dispute over nothing.

Unforced, natural, smooth... How often do we say that about our DB's? Crawford then who else?

Not too often in the past, but I think Love, Vaughn, and Watkins are pretty smooth fluid CB's.

Love looks like he is going to be a good one. Vaughn will play in the NFL. I am highest on Watkins, but until he stays healthy, I really can't gauge his game. That actually makes me rethink what our strongest position groups may be. DB or OL? Either way maybe stronger than I first gave credit to.
