Awesome to hear Kelly mention Owusu first when asked about stand out scout team / developmental guys.

I look forward to seeing this kid at Rover. If Tranquil leaves, I wonder if Bilal can hold him off for the starting spot in '18 and I wonder if Simon can ever take it from him?

All good problems to have.

I get the impression that Elko and Lea really like this kid, far more than some may realize.

It will certainly be interesting to follow, but whether or not he becomes the every down Rover, I feel pretty confident saying he's going to be a part of this defense in the future.

Going back to fall camp every ND beat writer kept mentioning that JOK had a different level of athleticism to him, that was noticeable, even doing simple movement drills. Obviously Kelly sees that as well.

he was also one of the few freshman who were right on the cusp of playing this year but towards the end of camp they made the decision to redshirt...wise decision looking back now

Been sayin' it since Day 1.

Simon replaces Tranquill and Coney's replacement is TBD in '19

The JOK is here to stay.
May I ask an amateur question......

Can someone clarify ROVER, MIKE, BUCK

If im correct
- Rover is "He who shall not be named" and now Clark Lea's special LB hybrid position
- Mike is your standard Middle/Strong LB
- Buck? a standard Weak Side LB?

Rover-Mike-Buck????

I can't emphasize enough how excited I am for these three. Going to be one of the top groups in the nation imo.

With that trio....Coney-Mike, Tranquill-Buck, JOK-Rover....? Correct?

That's a lot of speed. I dig it.

yeah most folks reckon Drue will play Buck.

It really does not matter anyways because the defense is in nickel half the time and Drue never left the field. It was always him and Morgan (Mike LB). So next year it will be Drue and Coney on the field every snap

I know we are technically a 4-2-5, but whenever we had all three LB's on the field, my amateur eyes saw alignments that other teams call a base 4-3, mostly due to safety alignment on the back end.

Idk, maybe someday I'll understand it lol.

This might help some: https://footballtoolbox.net/defense/understanding-the-4-2-5-defense

You're right in that, especially against a pro set or something, it'll look more 4-3. It's designed to make that Rover be a hybrid. We heard it often throughout Drue's career now, is he a LB or SS? This position fits a guy like him (I imagine Harrison Smith would have been great in this defense). Allowing Drue to play close to the line, using his size with speed in closed space to make plays. It prevents that player from having to cover massive area as a safety, while still being productive in coverage.

As Lea becomes comfortable with his 3 LB's performance in this D, you'll see more 3 LB sets in passing downs. It's not just the LB's but the Stud's understanding and ability to execute. Wake had great play from their Buck-Rover-Stud because they were the right fit and they grew up in the system.

I wonder if Drue went to Purdue would Elko and Lea have come to ND last year?

He obviously made their job easier, or even possible might be a better way of phrasing it.

Hope for a speedy recovery JOK.

I was really looking forward to him getting some PT this year with a full year to then develop into a significant contributor. Looks like he was banged up all camp and now this.

What’s the rover depth chart?

Asmar Bilal RS JR
Shayne Simon FR

THEN

Nick Coleman SR ?
DJ Morgan RS SO ?
Jordan Genmark Heath SO ?
Derek Allen FR ?
Paul Moala FR ?

Idk who would be third behind those dudes. I hope they have somebody cross training there. Personally would like to see DJ Morgan there. Think he could work as a former big safety.

Wouldn't they just throw Tranquil there and have Jonathon Jones or JGH play Buck?

I think you have to have JGH cross train at buck and Rover now. JGH should be number 2 at rover.
