Never heard showing great speed on a QB sneak in the same sentence before. Didn't realize that was such an important aspect of the QB position

I once saw a qb draw for a TD by Tommy Rees. So there is a slow sneak.

it should be noted though, it was even mentioned in several articles that he WOULDN'T shine in practices but he just dominates when the lights are on...killer instinct

yeah, but, every coach only plays players that excel at practice.

'17 TX QB Avery Davis (Notre Dame Verbal)

'17 TX QB Avery Davis (Notre Dame Verbal)

Thomas reminds me Desean Jackson in high school.

East St. Luis kid would have given ND somewhat of a leg up.

But as mentioned he has serious academic and or off the field problems.

He put in work to get back on his high school team and announcers said they removed him from the game, but he put in work to get invited again.

This kid can play. I want to see if he gets a fair shot in the spring.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that Wimbush is the guy, no question, through the offseason and into next year.

The question is if Davis or Phil J can surpass Book for backup duties, and thus earning the first shot at taking over if Brandon struggles again next season.

From everything I've read and watching his highlight reels, this kid sounds like he's a slightly slower Brandon Wimbush. From what some of the analysts were saying, he may do a better job of decision making on the read option. He may also do a better job of keeping his eyes down field when forced from the pocket. But it sounds like accuracy and field vision may be a concern. Obviously he may have improved those areas of weakness by the time next year rolls around.

All I’m gonna say is I’ll be shocked if he ever plays over Wimbush, Book or Jurkovec. IMO Phil Jurkovec is our most important recruit since Jaylon. I don’t understand the QB recruiting under BK. If we don’t land Phil I don’t know who we would have gotten. I know McNarama can play and still has a year left and I’m a fan of Book ,but Wimbush(5th year), Book, Davis And McNarama would have scared the crap out of me if that was our depth chart. Plus BK QB’s haven’t lit the world on fire. Same guy who almost took Jack Benevndti. I know some will disagree but that’s my hot take for today

He is fast as hell but his arm strength doesn't impress me yet and his height 5'11 is concerning. I wish the staff would focus on recruiting guys 6'3 or taller, kizer and Phil type guys who are great pocket passers but can also run and keep defenses on their toes

Tough to know what you have until you see him under fire

I like getting one QB per recruiting class

Me too. And I like alternating potential game-changers, like Wimbush and Phil, with smart, gritty, gamers, like Book and McNamara. Kids who will wait their turn and can run the offense at a high level when called upon.

I also agree with IrishFanJMercy that I'd be hesitant to recruit undersized project players, like Davis. But you do need to take one QB year, and we have enough depth if Phil gets here that he he'll have time to develop, so taking a dynamic play maker like Davis made sense.

For real or are we just projecting Wimbush’s weaknesses on to a similar-type QB none of us have ever seen play college ball?

I’ve no idea how good Davis may be, but curious to see what he can do this spring.

No, just telling you what the analysts were saying what his weaknesses were coming out of high school. Chill out.

certainly could put quite a wrinkle in our offense having a legit qb tossing a pass on trick play

I can’t see Avery Davis playing over any WR or RB. Any time he enters the game it would be for a trick play or a major decoy

that's what i was saying...i don't think one bit he would play over anyone, i just meant an added wrinkle in the offense on a specific play or package for him
