Urban did this with Torrance Gibson out of Florida. Gibson was switched to WR almost immediately. Now it sounds like he's on his way out to go to a JUCO school and try his hand at QB.

Using Urban as an example will not win you points around here. Just because they both would sell kids coal and call it diamonds, doesn't mean that its right. Harbaugh should've told Dillon he was a LB, when he committed, not 6 months later, at the end of the cycle.

I agree, that his upside is at LB, but he committed to UM, because they told him, he'd play RB.

I have no problem with it, because the coaches are actually in the long run looking out for the best interest of the kids.

Gibson is NEVER going to play QB in the NFL or at any kind of high level in college. He does however have amazing potential as a WR. Gibson has all the physical gifts and tools to wind up being a 1st round WR.

Sometime these coaches need to save these kids from themselves. It's just a shame they don't have parents there to make them realize the truth.

Then why did they not communicate this to him 6 months ago? This was either the grand plan, which would be extremely conniving. Or Harbaugh just recently realized that Dillon is a better LB than RB prospect. I certainly don't agree with the latter.

Big picture, I agree that its probably in his best interest. But what was in his best interest 6 months ago, was not to be lied to, about where he would play at UM.

Tim Tebow would have made a hell of a linebacker.

GREAT example there.

Was Pryor even drafted? I know TatGate and missing his senior season did him no favors- but he was never going be drafted as a QB by the NFL.

He's finally now starting to have some semblance of a legit NFL career as a WR after 6 years bouncing around the league.

Had he played WR in college, he'd have been a top 10 pick and 6 years into to a Hall of Fame level career or close to it as a WR. I really believe that. Dude is off the charts athletically. 6'4, 225 with 4.3 speed.

Adam Jones disagrees with this.

Not sure I've ever seen a better short yard runner in college football than Tebow. 4th and 1 or 2- give me Tebow on a QB dive every time.

If he could've developed his pass catching and blocking a little bit- he'd have been a real weapon- think he would've killed it as an H-Back/Fullback/TE all-in one hybrid- and probably still be playing in the NFL right now.

No they're not. Not in terms of "what position is this kid best suited for as a professional." They're thinking about "At what position can this kid best help my program for the next four years."
Now that may well be different than how the kid sees themselves, especially when - like AJ Dillon - they're running all over a bunch of prep schoolers from Massachusetts and think they can do same in the show. And what they're best for in college may well - often does - line up with their pro potential. But not necessarily. See Denard Robinson.
Either way, Harbaugh doesn't care about maximizing the draft potential of a kid he hasn't even signed yet. Neither does Meyer or Kelly. They've got more immediate concerns.

That said, if AJ Dillon is bound and determined to play running back in college, he could do a lot worse than BC.

apparently- according to the "insiders" - on the official visit Dillon wanted guarantees he wasn't going to be moved to LB'er. Michigan staff wouldn't give him any such guarantee- hence why he's looking around.

Sucks. I really wanted this kid badly as a MIKE LB'er. He's already 6'1, 235. Give him a redshirt year to add muscle and learn the position and defense- you've got a 6'1, 250 pound MIKE 'backer who runs in the low 4.5's in the 40, 4.2's in the shuttle and has a 39" vertical. Kinda testing numbers and size most MLB's can only dream of.

Of course you don't have a problem with it, because it's Harbaugh doing it. The problem, and you know damn well it's true, is that the kid gave his commitment expecting to be playing RB in Ann Arbor, however, now that he's closer to signing day, and the coaches are there fawning all over Najee Harris, he sees the writing on the wall. Fukk, go back to your own shitty message board and quit coming here because, unlike T Town Timmy, you only stop by to gloat.........fukking douche

AJ Dillon on his decommitment/commitment

"Coaches Lunch" article

“My decommitment was truly because of what I thought was best for my future with guidance from my family. I’m thankful for the University of Michigan football program welcoming me with open arms. I decided to commit to Boston College because that’s where I feel that I will be the most successful on and off the field."

We blew it so bad he's gonna be a program changer for BC When you have an athlete of his caliber position is irrelevant. He's a bigger badder Toby Gerhart

Then why not go to Michigan and play linebacker like they want but chose to go to BC to play RB if position is irrelevant?

Because offense is his preference he barely played LB in HS. Dillon is a freak at 230-240 he's shotputting better than most linemen.

Hell why not go to ND to play LB like the staff originally wanted?

Because he committed to michigan as a RB but then later in the cycle was told he would be a linebacker which (EVERYONE) knew was going to happen....and now is heading to BC because he can play RB...he is 230lbs RIGHT NOW...will be around 245 in college...NOT GOING TO BE AN EFFECTIVE RB

The Bus was 240ish lbs when he was at ND. LJ Scott at MSU has played in the 230+ range at MSU and Le'veon Bell was listed at 237 in his final season at MSU.

No doubt bigger backs are more rare and generally have a harder time being successful, but it can be done.

In that offense, he will be.

2 of those played at msu...different system...bettis was in a whole different time period of football...its almost nonexistent in this day and age of college football...and he is 230 in high school...15lbs being put on is even low balling....oh and don't bother showing his highlights against 5'8 160lb linebackers that attempted to tackle him..that is TERRIBLE competition he plays ....i think he could be a good inside linebacker but i will eat crow w/ a side of crow if he amounts to anything at the rb position in college...i would bet he is moved to linebacker before junior year

Why does he have to gain 15 pounds in college? Why cant he tone up and be the same 230 or less? Not to mention, BC had two RB's over 230 and two more over 220 this season.

Furthermore, Andre Williams played for BC and is 6' and 230. Now he is in the pros. So at BC, big RB's is far from non-existent. It's more the norm.

he has a linebacker body, he is going to fill out even more w/ a regimented nutrition program and college strength training...he just is a big boy...and i know he had success at BC but he was also a track star in high school as well....how's andre doing in the pro's? 1 game this year

Williams last appeared in NFL action in 2015 with the New York Giants and finished with 257 yards on 16 carries. Williams’ best season came in 2014 when he had 721 yards rushing to go along with 7 touchdowns. Unfortunately for Williams he was never able to transition his punishing style of running from the college level to the pro game as with evident by his career 3.2 yards per carry.

What does that have to do with whether he can be successful at RB at Boston College?

you're right...i should have phrased it in terms of NFL...but i also just don't see him being a successful RB at the collegiate level...but i will gladly admit it if i am wrong
