No surprise.

Did ND squeeze everything out of him in the 3 years we had him? Same question with Dexter Williams.

BK doesn't get a lot of elite talent, but when he does, he needs to get more use out of it.

Kyle Hamilton is a good example of him doing this, but K Met and Dexter Williams usage makes no sense to prior to their final year here.

I hope Chris Tyree gets snaps early and often.

Good luck to K Met. He should have a 10 year NFL career.

I'll that kmet didn't reach his full potential while at ND but Dexter's usage had way more to do with him, his work ethic, his ability to learn the nuances of the position which didn't click for him until his last year, and while I was also frustrated with his usage, him not being able to crack the 53 for the Packers is another example of why it wasn't just BK and ND that had reservations about playing him more.

He averaged 9 YPC in 2018 and never fumbled. I'll never be OK with his lack of carries in 2018. Doing that with elite talent limits the offense from reaching its potential.

I hope the Kyle Hamilton approach will be the norm going forward.

Wasn't KMet hurt most of his career? I might be wrong about that, but it feels like he's been perpetually dinged up.

As far as Dexter, we've been over this but we'll agree to disagree. The coaching staff putting him in after he mentally corrected himself, and him doing well after he mentally corrected himself, is not evidence that he would've been amazing before he mentally corrected himself. The whole point is that he was a great back after doing what the coaches told him to do.

You mean 2017? I don't think he had a lack of carriers in 2018

I think we have talent on the roster. However I still think he will be hard to replace. I know he probably got a better grade than he thought he would I just hate someone says one thing and does the complete opposite.

But surprised. He had an okay year with one great game in a loss to Georgia and a bunch of other okay games.

Alize Mack had a better college career. Maybe Kmet should have played more last year but obviously the coaches thought Mack was better.

Time for Brock Wright to get a lot of opportunities. He was higher rated out of school than Kmet.

That’s a pretty aggressive take.

Losing Kmet is a bummer. He could’ve been enormous next year. But that’s college football, I guess. Time for Tommy Tremble to step on up.

Alize Mack took a lot of reps from Kmet last year. Not looking good in retrospect. Freshman year there was Smythe and Kmet got hurt, this year they certainly "squeezed" as much as the could out of him.

Wish he would have stayed but his choice. Tremble looks promising and we'll see how the other youngsters look. I see Mayer getting playing time from day 1 when he's there.

I think the Go to pass catcher at TE next year will be Tremble for sure, Wright hasn't shown much as far as a dynamic pass catcher.

Mack was obviously seen as better that year. The buzz around Kmet really amped up this season. I think while he was still playing baseball he probably wasn't as good as this year.

Glass half full:

First off, congrats Cole. THIS is what every #1 skill position kid coming out of HS should shoot for.

THIS is what ND needs more of... productive, skill position guys going pro early. I'd like to see 2-3 going yearly.

As far as being worried about replacing him? Not me. Brock Wright, Tommy Tremble, George Takacs and Michael Mayer with Kevin Bauman taking a RS is a loaded roster.

Plus:

Tommy Tremble had more production as the #2 TE threat behind Kmet than what Kmet had behind A. Mack in either year. Tommy Tremble is being slept on. HE's next year's big gainer in the passing game in regards to returning players and he'll be used just like Kmet at the Eifert / unattached FLEX.

Who wants some action? I'll take 2020's TE's have as many or more receptions than this year's TE's. (63)

Yeah Kmet was very popular and highly rated by the journalists. He just didn't produce much, though he also didn't drop anything.
I think we will still be better at TE next year than we were this year. I really hope Wright comes back as he also has never dropped anything that I can think of and seems to have a great attitude.

If I got injured as much as him I’d bolt as well. One more injury and he may be viewed as damaged goods. Fantastic tight end ! Hope he lands somewhere with a good QB that is over 6 foot and can see him

On the other hand we won’t miss a beat. TE is our strongest position again next year.

Kmet had very little impact for the Irish in his 3 years. 60ish catches for approx 700 yards for his career. He had a good year this year but that was it.

Also glass half full he was pretty average as a blocker. He was terrible against ISU.

Injuries and splitting time with baseball couldn't have been the most beneficial. But that's not as fun a narrative.

There is a lot more to playing TE than catching the ball. Like others, I feel we will be fine with the TE on the roster next year, but don't just look at receptions to quantify his value to the team.

Kmet wasn’t a very great blocker, 3rd best TE blocker. I’ll miss him but we’ll be fine

Nope. And can anybody name the last true freshman TE who balled out? Not just an ND, but anywhere.

Isaac Nauta from UGa. I don't remember his numbers but they were good

My former #1 for ND in '18... Pat Freiermuth at PSU. Strong #'s too

Of the two, Freiermuth had better numbers (Nauta had 350 yards, and I was hoping for much more).

My point is that true freshmen TE don't normally have huge impacts, it was the same for TEs in the NFL their first year. So I don't think we should worry too much if Mayer doesn't come in and light the world on fire.
