If you're a health junior and you'll be the #1 player at your position, is there literally ever a reason to come back?

Such a pitty how under utilized he was as a frosh/soph for guys like Alize Mack. We should have gotten a lot more out of him prior to this year.

Yes he missed a game for an ankle sprain, I'm aware.

Play baseball and improve. Being the #1 TE doesn't automatically make you a top pick. It all depends and the needs of the teams drafting where you end up. Besides hasn't he said he was coming back?

He may be the #1 TE but what is he overall. That's the determining factor. He may be the #1 TE but there are 64 other guys better than him at various positions for example.

If he stays another year he could perhaps be the next Hockenson taken #8 last year or Fant taken #20.

Wasn't it hinted that part of the reason Kmet wanted to come back was to play another year of baseball too? Or did I misinterpret that?

Maybe he wants to follow Shark's lead and try to boost his stock in both sports?

Either way, albeit it's only one list, tough to imagine a player at the top of his position's list wouldn't leave if he wanted to pursue the NFL, even if that position group is seen as light for this upcoming draft.

We really need him next year. Would be tough to have him and Claypool absent in the passing game.

Teams are going to draft based on their needs, not a player’s overall ranking.

If he knows he won't test all that well at the combine, he may decide to come back toput together a better on field resume and develop his body. If he's going to test well, he should declare, imo.

Received a 2nd round grade and will "decide after bowl game", per Sampson.

I still think he's gone, like I've always thought. So were really close to officially returning like 40 receptions in 2020.

I hope some of your wild optimism about the WR group is dead on. I think it's going to be a very frustrating year for the WRs, and therefore the QB.

I figured he'd get a 2nd round grade, and do think that's where he'd land this year. If Kmet came back, stays healthy (very important as that could be a knock this year), and plays like he has then he could very well sneak into the 1st in 2021.

If he goes to the combine and shows off his freak athleticism and interviews well with a good physical he will go at the end of the 1st round this year.

I agree b/c there’s not a lot of great TE in this year’s draft class.

I'd declare if I was him. This year's TE class is very weak and next year's should be much stronger. He'd have a good shot at being the first one off the board this year.

Does anyone know ballpark how close he is to getting his degree? If it is a couple of classes, it would be a non brainer to leave in a weak TE class year. Face it, with Ian at QB next year, it isnt like ND is in the playoffs anyhow so how much could Cole really gain by staying?

So, assuming Okwara, Kareem, Gilman, Elliott, Bilal, Claypool and Pride are all drafted, that is 7 out of 11 guys whose eligibility is expiring getting drafted. Really Shannon should count as 8 because he'd be looking forward to a Jansen-like career if he wanted it. If Kmet goes, that would be 9 out of 12. Compared with Clemson last year of, by my count, 6 out of 16. After next year, even assuming Book doesn't get drafted (which if he has the kind of year he is capable of, he will) and assuming JOK stays (which if he has the same kind of year as this year, he won't), we'll be looking at probably 9 draftees out of 14. This is a great trajectory.

I have to say, that’s pretty damn solid for your first IE post.

Thanks brother. Love this site. Looking back the past decade and maybe I'm missing someone, but I couldn't see any 1st or 2nd round TEs who went early without at least one full season of good productivity other than Gronk. So, hopefully that bodes well for Kmet. It may not be Oline, but it is a tough position to plug and play at on only 3 years of experience and college strength training. Not that it matters, but, if he does go, how cool would it be to have the most draft picks of all college football. Kmet would make 9 and Alabama won last year with 10 but is going to be down this year. With our tied for #3 with LSU in pro bowlers behind only Alabama and OSU (should have been ahead of LSU as Jaylon got robbed), it is nice to have this argument to add to the 4 for 40 recruiting pitch for the foreseeable future.

Where did all the good posts go debating if he was the #1 TE or not?

Anyway, FWIW, Matt Freeman (ISD) says he's the #1 TE on the board. No surprise.

Time for a prayer thread.

I'd declare. It's a weak class and next year's is very good with guys like Pat Freiermuth and Kyle Pitts.

Him staying depends on how much of a Notre Dame man on IE he wants to be

He received a second round grade from the NFL. Even if he's the #1 ranked TE, teams aren't going to make a reach for a TE. If he's happy with that, then I imagine he will declare.

I keep seeing this argument but I can’t believe this is even part of the equation. He’s a competitor who wants to prove he’s the best regardless of the others in the draft class. It all depends upon his priorities.

Pitts is more like a WR right now. He needs to bulk up and work on his in-line blocking if he truly wants to be a TE at the next level. Very talented though.

Don't show that! It will give the #NeverQuinn's an instantaneous aneurysm.

He's the guy who turned the #1 TE on the list from a 2* HS QB into an All American TE.

Kelce didn't have his breakout season at Cincy until 2012. Quinn left there to be the HC at Buffalo in 2010.

How can you possibly give Quinn any credit for Kelce's development?

Because he was the OC who oversaw his recruitment and changed him to a TE. Just like he changed his brother into an offensive lineman. If he doesn't, Butch Jones probably continues to use him as Cincy's Belldozer, which Quinn and Kelly used him as his Fr. year.

Do you see a pattern here? Ask Joe Staley if he likes being a HOF LT or the WR Quinn transformed him from his Sr year of HS?

Disappointing, but good luck to Kmet! Heck maybe the Bears can draft him
