In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with Kraemer at RT that helping him a little with a decent blocking RB won't cure. As season goes on, he'll get his first two steps figured out quicker. He is still a mountain man mean mauler.

keep a TE or RB in to pass block early on and he should be fine. he's still the highest rated OL on the ND roster out of HS (higher than Q and McGlinchey)

Obviously Kraemer didn't have a great scrimmage, but keep in mind this is his first time in a real game situation besides the spring game.

BK/Harry probably think he's the most likely to put it together as the season goes along. He's super talented obviously, and has 1 year in the weight program (albeit Longo's).

Starting a RS freshman who was a borderline 5-star as your 'worst' OL is really not that bad. It's too bad we scheduled Georgia game 2, because Tommy will have only 1 game to learn on the job, but what can we do at this point.

I trust that HH/BK know Tommy has what it takes to get better at the technicality of playing RT this year as it goes on, because physically, I have faith in him being ready now.

bars is apparently looking great at RG though, would you move him to RT where he is so-so and have Kraemer at RG where he hasn't practised at. I think BK is gonna take his lumps with Kraemer and hope he gains confidence and experience.

The DE lined up over Kraemer is gonna be let through free, or with just a chip block, quite often anyway with the RPO, right?

Let him learn on the fly, and in addition to what OMM said, let Wimbush give him some help with read plays, too.

Kramer's upside is huge, and its also a sign that we want to be a running team.

But Bars was injured and then lacked strength when he was recovering from his injury. His mediocre start was not indicative of his ceiling. I still think they should slide him outside again, now that he's back to 100%.

I'd go: McGlinchey--Nelson--Mustipher--Kraemer--Bars

Bars is exactly where he should be. His NFL stock is going to rise all season at guard.

This interview with Long suggests that Hainsey will move to LT next year and the only battle will be at LG. If true, I am extremely worried. I was hoping Kraemer would move to LG and Hainsey would play RT and there'd be someone else capable of being the answer at LT. Hainsey really doesn't have the "length" of a typical LT. Will be interesting to see if this all holds true through spring.

Neither did Zack Martin have the length for LT. I trust the staff will have the most capable individual at LT

True, but if he's got the demeanor and HH trusts him, I think it'll be fine. Obviously Hainsey is nowhere near as good, but Z Mart also had less than ideal measurables for LT, but he was the best O lineman I've seen in the Hiestand era.

Zach Martin didn't really have the length for a tackle either. I may not remember right, but I think Hainsey did really well at the high school all star game at tackle.

OK but Zack was the most technically sound OL, ever. So good he was All-Pro as a rookie in the NFL. Hainsey has not showed that... yet. He was a true freshman though! So maybe he's just scratching the surface of what he can do.

zach martin didnt have the length for tackle......just messing

but I will add that HH knows high level LT play. Martin, Stanley, and Big Mike. That's quite the run.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether Zach Martin had the length to play LT? Or whether Hainsey has the length to play LT?

Asking for a friend.

I thought he was pretty good last year. Outplayed Kramer I thought. So I hope and think you are right that he is only scratching the surface.

Still I would like Hainsey at RT and Kramer inside. I wonder if this says more to the lack of development or faith in Liam and Lugg.

My optimistic side thinks that Hainsey is just that good. Glass half full....

Like trying to pick your favorite child but I thing I am going to go with Nelson on this one.

So Lugg and Eichenberg might be OG's and Banks an OT, pretty much the opposite of what I envisioned, lol.

EDIT: Jk, the article was a freebie and I see what I was missing. My bad.

I figured this meant the staff was more comfortable with the backup options at guard filling in as starters (between Lugg and Banks) than they are at tackle, since they're willing to leave Kraemer at RT and move Hainsey to the blind side, rather than hoping Liam is the answer at LT immediately.

Or did the article mention Banks specifically moving to tackle?

Mentioned specifically that he worked at Tackle during bowl prep and that's where they like him right now. Talked about his basketball background as helping with his 1 on 1 blocking.

So it seems like it boiled down to the staff saying, "we return four starters... do we want that open spot to be LT or LG?"

I understand the decision to put the guy with plenty of reps at LT right away to let him settle it, while allowing time to find the answer at LG, rather than vice-versa.

Since we are getting a new coach, I predict:

LT: Hainsey
LG: Kraemer
C: Mustpher
RG: Bars
RT: Eichenberg/Banks/Lugg

I thought that was why Eichenberg spent the whole year at LT, to get him the reps to be ready for next year? Did he look that bad that they had to change the plan?

It's probably more that Hainsey was taking reps with the first unit, in actual game settings, and the coaches saw enough in film review to make them comfortable that he can anchor LT, and also that they're comfortable with Kraemer as a full-time RT as long as the LG competition isn't a total disaster.

Eichenberg might have been impressive in practice and in garbage time, but that's different than projecting what Hainsey will be able to do, considering they have an entire year of film of Hainsey against opposing DE's.
