Not saying he ins't good but i believe that we have the players on the team for the WR position to be very good. No need to add to the mix for what we already have a plenty of.

All four VT transfers are part of their passing offense (QB, TE, WR, WR) and all are Beamer recruits. Plus, their WR coach is also leaving.

Not an expert, but I seem to remember that Kumah is real good --- a difficult cover. And by the way, I'll take two Chase Claypools any day. No reason why the young speed can't get plenty of reps if they are actually good.

I have a vague memory that Kumah might have Beamer-balled a punt resulting in a TD last year but could be mistaken.

I'll be honest, I don't understand our scholarship situation for next year at all.

Pretty simple.

86 Scholarships
#87 Isaiah Foskey
#88 Asa Turner/Eric Kumah/Joseph Appiah Darkwa/some other transfer or 2019
#89 JD Bertrand
#90 Marist Liufau

I’m assuming Isaiah Foskey is coming, but essentially I think the staff has 89 dudes on board (Isaiah Foskey included) and they’d like to add one more dude maybe on top of that. Asa Turner seems extremely unlikely and they might get a spring visit from Eric Kumah for a summer transfer or they get Darkwa on campus this weekend before he commits to Penn State. The staff is being very aggressive in trying to get to 85 and stay there for the 2019 season. I think it’s excellent.

Given our track record with 5Ys, I doubt this guy is going to keep anyone who’s super talented from seeing the field. Especially since he won’t be here for Spring ball. The next generation will have plenty of time to prove themselves and win a spot. If a couple guys look good enough in April, maybe we say “no thanks” to Mr. Kumah and roll with who we’ve got.
But having an experienced big WR who knows how to catch the ball in our back pocket doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

Kumah isn't a 5th year. He's grad transferring with 2 years of eligibility remaining.

He’s a grad transfer who would arrive on campus in June to clarify. He’s played in all 3 seasons at Virginia Tech so he’d have 1 year to play 1. Only about 2 and 1/2 months to learn Chip Long’s offense. Definitely can be done but will be tough. He’s a talented dude.

Evidently the staff doesn't see it that way.

This is why I don't worry about this stuff. The staff has a reason they are looking at him. We can speculate, hear rumors, read 247, etc., but the fact is there's really only a handful of people that know what''s going on and they aren't inclined to share this info. BK's management of the roster has gotten better every year. I trust him to do what's best.

It may be more about the presence in the WR room of another upperclassman that does things the right way, than his ability to impact game day.

My guess is they have some doubts about Claypool or Finke as being the guys to lead the young pups.

I remember watching Kumah on the field a lot when ND played VT this past fall.

I recall him showing strong hands on a contested catch. He also showed good field awareness, ran physical, not allowing himself to be pushed off his route by Pride, and protected his body position when running his route along the sideline. He also caught a touchdown over Donte Vaughn in the fourth quarter.

However, it appears he looks like he has issues naturally catching the football. He let a few passes hit him in the chest. But, that could be of the pressure and hand fighting going on as he was being contested for the catch.

His highlights show good physicality and strong hands under pressure. He does win a lot of contested ball. Yes, he’s tall, but despite being nearly 25 pounds lighter than both Boykin and Claypool, he does not make it easy for the defensive back to do his job on those throws. He fights. His yards after catch ability is not from speed or separation. But he gets out of tackles, not for being “slippery” like Chris Finke, but uses force and proper arm technique to keep the defender off his body. This is something I saw more with Claypool than Boykin this past season.

He is more of a Claypool. Nothing jumps out and defines an elite trait, but plays a solid game.

He’s a solid receiver, but if his addition would keep more of the explosive, yet unpolished wide receivers like Young, Austin and Lenzy off the game field, I would be more inclined to give the talent we have waiting more of an opportunity. It is good to keep in mind, he is a veteran player who has played in big games against higher level completion on a weekly basis. The leadership tangiables could be there, as well.

It will be interesting to follow his new recruitment. It should be fairly competive for all teams pursuing him.

With how many posts are in this thread, you'd think he had already committed into coming here or something.

I doubt it would be a thing at all if we weren't sitting at +5 or 6, or whatever the current number is or is projected to be... who would have thought ND might have a full roster....

I'm not sure if this got mentioned in Finke's thread, but CF showed a completely unexpected ability to stay up and after contact and break tackles this year. I wouldn't call it slippery at all. It looked more like a combination of will-power, balance, and functional strength and it reminded me of . . . Golden Tate.

GT was the WR who simply refused to go down after the catch. When they's blow the whistle, he'd always have a guy or two draped on him trying unsuccessfully to bring him down. I haven't seen that trait in a while, and was shocked to see a glimmer of it with Finke of all people. But it happened a bunch.

Bold prediction: Finke becomes a big feature of the offense next year, and its not a bad thing.

I love the Finkester, but I think Keys will start to eat away at his PT.

Tate was/is such a f*cking ballplayer. Not a big dude but would just will his way into touchdowns against elite defensive backs. Might have been my single favorite guy to watch in 30 years watching Notre Dame football. (hence the avatar).
Finke’s not that. But agree he’s tougher than he looks and even the glimmer of Tate is high praise.

Agree Kumah seems fine. Makes sense as a sense as a sort of big/experienced replacement for Boykin, who they probably didn’t expect to lose and who - I suspect - will be missed leading the WR room. I trust the staff to manage the roster better than we can and if this guy can bring some talent and leadership, that’s great. If he decides to go elsewhere, it’ll be OK too.

Totally agree: just a glimmer, and meant as high praise.

The other underrated GT quality: his hands were like vices. He was going to take the jump ball from you, period.

Next Gen Stats:

8 out of 10 Golden Tate receptions resulted in Golden Tate standing up out-of-bounds with multiple defenders at his feet after trying unsuccessfully to bring him down.

1 out of 10 Golden Tate receptions resulted in a TD.

1 out of 10 Golden Tate receptions resulted in Tate tackling himself by trying to dive unreasonable distances to the pylon.

Idk guys, maybe we're overrating GT compared to Finke. Just think, Tate never got Tom Haverford banned.

Much like a wrestler avoiding a takedown, he takes his legs away from the tackler when he can.
