Maybe. Although I always thought tamponade was a condition that took time to develop, not something that happened instantly.
No. Tamponade can occur with very little fluid around the heart. It’s unlikely tamponade, if it is he has bigger problems like aortic dissection or free wall rupture. My guess would be commotio cordis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or a congenital cardiac problem.

Very sad all around and prayers to the young man. The trainers and medical staff did their job to the best they could and got him to the right place. Prayers up again.

That’s awful. I saw the coaches agrees to postpone the game. The NFL was prepared to keep playing apparently.

Yeah, from the video it looked like they were trying to resume, but the players went to the coaches and said "Nope, we're not doing it." and the coaches agreed. It was the right call to suspend.

Prayers for Hamlin. The whole thing was surreal. We were wrapping up a late Christmas gathering and I jumped in the car probably 20 minutes after the hit. I turned on the local Cincinnati station to listen to the game, unaware what was going on, and the commentators were absolutely sullen. For the longest time they didn't even say what had happened, with the way they were talking I thought there was a terrorist event at the stadium. It was a 20 minute drive, they never broke for commercial, I was stunned. Never seen anything like it.

The weirdest part was that the hit didn’t really look like much of anything. The way he just passed out was super scary.

We have to take a Sudden Cardiac Arrest course every year to coach. Took me awhile, but the more I watched it, the more I realized that's what it was. Very humbling to watch. I always take that course and think nothing of it, but I'm ashamed to say that if I had an athlete in that situation I would unlikely know all the logistics needed to handle it, at least when all the chips are on the table. Praying for the young man to pull through and praying for peace for all of those involved from, family, teammates, friends, personnel, etc.

quotes from Troy Vincent this morning definitely make it clear the league was trying to continue to play.

I have to take a course as well every year for coaching. I remember watching the Euros when Eriksen collapsed. It was watching that happen live when I realized why I need to take that course.

From the posts on IE, my interpretation is that the league officials were buying time with the temporary suspension with hopes of completing it last night. Team officials from both the Bills and the Bengals basically refused.

From an NBC Sports article - Troy Vincent: NFL did not consider giving players five minutes to warm up and continue - ProFootballTalk

Vincent was asked about the report that the teams at one point were given five minutes to warm up before continuing.

“I’m not sure where that came from,” Vincent said. “Frankly, there was no time period for the players to get warmed up. Frankly, the only thing that we asked was that [referee] Shawn [Smith] communicate with both head coaches to make sure they had the proper time inside the locker room to discuss what they felt like was best. So I’m not sure where that came from. Five-minute warmup never crossed my mind, personally. And I was the one . . . that was communicating with the Commissioner. We never, frankly, it never crossed our mind to talk about warming up to resume play. That’s ridiculous. That’s insensitive. And that’s not a place that we should ever be in.”

A few years ago a HS lacrosse player collapsed during a game after getting hit in the chest. Was saved by one of those portable defibs that a coach was trained on and grabbed quickly. This was after many years ago a Cornell players dying after taking a shot to the chest. They have new rules on padding to mitigate the risks of this occurring, but cardiac events -- with or without trauma to cause it -- are more common in athletics than people think. Many on here are saying they're trained yearly on this and that's great to hear. Fast acting and well trained persons save lives.

They make it clear the league was not trying to continue to play you meant right?

From ESPN -

"What was most important was that it wasn't about proceeding with the game," NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said during the conference call. "Frankly, that aspect never crossed my mind or their mind internally. We asked that [referee] Shawn [Smith] communicate with both Taylor and Coach McDermott getting the players together. Frankly, it was just about getting a pulse of where they were at that particular time."

If you never considered trying to play again what do you need to get the players together and get a pulse about?

"Emotions you can imagine in both locker rooms, and I commend both of those coaches," Vincent said. "Tough situation to go back in and look at 53 men in the locker room and not that they asked but just to try and calm people down. It was obvious on the phone with them that the emotions were extremely high. It was a very volatile situation, and I thought the coaches, they led tonight. They led their locker rooms."

Ok, so I am to believe the coaches went into the their respective locker rooms and tried to calm people down on their own volition? Simultaneously?

It's clear the league wanted to get this game done, and you would be crazy to believe otherwise. This is a scheduling/logistical nightmare for the NFL right now and the game involved two playoff bound teams with seeding and division on the lines. There is only one week left in the season and this game being on a Monday night vs a Thursday night gave them no leeway to "try again" in the same week and get creative next week.

I read on TV that the decision to cancel came from Goodell's office (doubtless after the Bills coach said that his team was really devastated by this.)

Hank Gathers' situation probably not similar. His heart condition was already well-known by the medical staff and the criminal bastard who coached Loyola Marymount. In my estimation, that coach should have been imprisoned for manslaughter or homicide.

I think all of that can be true. If the players had wanted to play, I'm sure the NFL would have resumed the game at some point (even today or tomorrow). But I do think it is reasonable to believe that the NFL also is smart enough to know that resuming the game with the appearance that they forced the players' hands would have been terrible PR. I think it's fair to assume some goodwill on the part of everyone involved while understanding that it makes the league offices' jobs harder.

And I think coaches going into their locker rooms to try to calm people down and get a pulse on the room is exactly what I'd tell the coaches if I was Troy Vincent.

I read somewhere that there are 12 cases of CC per year on average. I can't verify that claim.

Didn't Gathers actually collapse once before the deadly collapse too? Truly was criminal.

Huge props to the trainers and first responders last night. A football player in cardiac arrest in the middle of 80,000 people is so different than what they were probably used to. His jersey has get cut off and cutting off shoulder pads is possible, but not easy. Then they had to take the face mask off to access his airway.

A nightmare situation all around. It sounds like they acted with the proper sense of urgency and gave Damar Hamlin a chance for the best possible outcome.

Hamlin's friend and marketing agent, Jordan Rooney, joined the Pat McAfee Show this afternoon, basically just said that they don't have a tangible update and they're still running tests. He added that they're not out of the woods yet, but they're remaining positive.

Exactly this. You know, that’s what I hate about American culture right now - every event has to have some boogeyman doing something insidious. It’s bullshit, and I’m a little tired of the act. Nobody was trying to do anything wrong here. Best intention were had by all and it was a horrible situation. The only horrible people are those who try to fabricate some bad guy.
