I think he's widely considered one of the best guards in the country.

True, but is pretty rare for a guard to get picked early. And the 5th year often does help a OLM's draft status. So I'd expect him back. If he does leave we'll be OK if he's the only one(Eich, Banks and Hainsey are all draft eligible this spring). Lugg is ready; not sure if anyone else is.

If Quinn Carroll hadn't gone down with a knee injury, I'd pencil him in to replace Kraemer next year (if Tommy left). But I'm not so sure now.

Yeah, he should get a year of rehab plus strength building then he can take over a starter spot for 2 years after. He should be able to get some rotational work next year.

Is Quinn OG or OT? I thought OT?

I don't know but he should play OG because he'd be dynamite on the interior.

Big Tommy is one of my favorite players so I watch his work on stop-action replay all the time. Despite others' making negative remarks early on this site (apparently without closely watching themselves), I've obnoxiously defended him. The reason: He's plowing people under. He's running guys (as is Hainsey) yards away from the lanes on the more open plays. He OFTEN is smashed down on top of his opponent, pancake side up or not. He has often so mauled his opponent that the guy will ultimately try to punch him.

BTW, that holding penalty on our first drive was EXTREMELY marginal --- a great running block where the @#$% guy turned a little and for a smallest bit of time, Tommy kept his hand on his jersey. Pure crap in my view.

AA? Don't know. Damm good, for sure.

You said earlier in the year the O-line would be improved from last year and IIRC TK was one that you mentioned should be very good.

There were several giveaways for me. Tommy beat out Liam when that position (RT) was open three years ago, despite many here wanting Liam. Our Line coach thought differently.

Then along came Hainsey, and everyone including the coaches went wild. Tommy still started and we did the weird thing of alternating them on different series. I checked the films. We scored WAY more when Tommy was in the game than Robert.

But Robert was viewed as a natural tackle and Tommy a guard, so that's the way it ultimately went. People were irrationally impatient with a guy who was being jerked around positionally, but Tommy still was mauling opponents more than the others --- he just didn't have all the guard pulling stuff down yet.

So here we are: Tommy's comfortable, the opponents aren't, and my "Big'un" is giving a bunch of them unwanted rides. Is he perfect? No; people are human. He is sadly only a really damm good lineman who once a game might make an "unforgivable" mistake (in the eyes of people who have never played high-level ball and hold people to the standard of Zach Martin.)

Go out and make the opponents miserable Big Man.

I don't think his recent ascension and people being critical of him have to be mutually exclusive. He wasn't good last year. Nothing more to it. The same could be said for a lot of the OL individually. This year, he's substantially improved, end of story. People were negative last year for the right reasons. And people are positive this year, for the right reasons. His improvement doesn't make his play last year better.

Wasn’t he also nursing an injury throughout the season last year?

And update on the severity of his injury? I’m going to assume he is done for the season.

Probably won’t know for a while. He went home after the game due to a death in the family. BK thinks it’s just a sprain.

Tommy really did play well. Are there any rumblings of him asking for an evaluation?

I used to pause watch Tommy every play on the replays. Believe me fellows, he rarely did anything but stone or maul his assignment. I swear that some of the opponents ultimately did not line up guys in front of him (something Zach also gets in the pros) and he had to go looking for blocks elsewhere.

Hainsey by the way was just about as impressive play by play. We lost a lot when both couldn't go. I believe that our offense changed when this happened and we lucked out that the "new" play sets worked out better for Book and Claypool/ Kmet/ Finke/ Lenzy. Plus we can be proud of Ruhland and Lugg coming through.

Our Big Boys did pretty fine. (Liam needs to be less twitchy and Aaron needs to be more active, but the right side was solid almost every drive.)

Tommy's offseason work to slim down and improve his quickness really helped.

Previously, if he got beat, it was because a defender beat him with a quick move through the gap or across his face and Tommy couldn't catch up with his legs.

That wasn't an issue at any point this year.

I'm excited for the OL next year, especially if we see similar year-to-year improvement from Banks and Eichenberg.

I'm not a fan of risking any injury for a bowl game with no implications.

let him be healthy for spring ball and full go.

Yikes. Down two OL starters for at least a couple weeks. Correll at center and Lugg at RG... next guy up is more questionable.

Following center Jarrett Patterson’s successful surgery Friday to repair a Lisfranc injury suffered in the Boston College game, right guard Tommy Kraemer underwent an appendectomy later that night, which means the Irish will need to insert two new offensive line starters for the Thanksgiving Friday clash with the Tar Heels.

https://247sports.com/college/notre...r-Sidelined-Following-Appendectomy-155218220/

For recovery context, just last month TE Austin Hooper underwent an emergency appendectomy and played 23 days later. Cleveland 2 had games and then a BYE.

OL Alex Mack was out 13 days back in 2011.

Matt Cassel played 11 days later in 2010.

Ben Roethlisberger played 10 days later in 2006.

I'm not too worried about his returning for Syracuse, or Wake Forest for that matter. But NCarolina will be concerning without those guys.

Patterson has a Lisfranc? Then next year is not a sure thing either.

I'm very worried about the North Carolina game. It's a game where we need to score consistently, and our trump card has always been our OL. I was confident replacing one starter would be fine, I'm less sure replacing two guys. We know Lugg is a capable player with experience though.

Syracuse we could handle with our backups and Wake is just a less talented version of UNC. But next week is going to be a real test. UNC skill position players are LEGIT and we're going to need to score 30+ (probably 40+) to win.

IDK. We constantly talk about how good our OL is, how good the recruiting has been, and how good Quinn is....

UNC's D isn't that good. Gave up 40+ three times this year. They gave up 50+ to Wake who has a pretty poor OL. We've had two weeks to figure out C. We have a week to figure out RG. IMO, Kramer has arguably been the weak link this year on the OL.

Not that worried. If we can't figure it out, we, and Quinn, are just not that good up front.

Agree with YJ. I think people give UNC way too much credit. They did lose to Florida St and Virginia after all. Their defense is horrid. Their offense has playmakers but so does Clemson.
