So the pitch here is that he can get a civil engineering bachelor from Notre Dame that'll allow him to go get a petroleum engineering masters after football, correct? Is that realistic, resident ASCE posters? It sounds reasonable to me, my layman view is that petroleum engineer is basically a specialized civil program and not a completely different ballgame like the relationship between say chemical engineering and computer engineering. No?

per wiltfong---Ferns's dad told me with Notre Dame it's all about finding out if the academic piece they're looking for is there.

"He doesn't need to be sold on the school or anything else," the elder Ferns said.

The whole situation with his brother was so weird. I know a lot of people thought he was very overrated.

And then you have a "top 100" guy that is mysteriously not being recruited hard by any of the big boys? I'm just skeptical of the whole situation.

Pretty much. Petroleum engineering is basically a newly invented fake type of engineering. It varies in definition from school to school, and generally combines elements of civil, geo (which is also "civil"), and chemical engineering.

Honestly, you're better off getting a more broad undergrad in one of the major accepted disciplines (i.e. civil or chemical) and then specializing afterwards... because a lot of "petroleum engineers" are actually finding themselves out of a job right now. "Big oil" is not exactly rolling in money like many would assume.

When I was at ND, you could do a concentration in either structural engineering or environmental engineering as part of your civil degree... and the coursework you take in environmental is pretty applicable to "petroleum" engineering.

I'm wondering if the family didn't rub a lot of people the wrong way over the last 2-3 years and that's the reason for the lack of interest. Now, it seems as though its turned into a bit of a scramble to try and get Brendan the best opportunity available.

Because on tape he looks like one heck of an athlete for the LB spot. After watching his senior highlights I'm fully on board with him taking a scholarship. However, I do agree that something seems off.

The biggest red flag? That any blue-chip LB recruit would want to come play for Elston after the way our backers looked this season.

No no. It's a major selling point for defensive players. If your defense can't get off the field, that's more time for them to shine and have game tape for pro scouts to analyze

Like stated above by Pandfan, this could all move very quickly provided they like what they hear.

According to his 247comp he's the #3 ILB in the country, and would give Kelly three of the top five players in Ohio in a recruiting year in which OSU was the defending national champs. So that's cool.

Big picture I agree, but OSU hasn't really been going after Brendan so hard to get too excited about beating Urbs in a head to head matchup. However, we might be able to say that about Hayes.

That may hold true with Ferns, but OSU wanted Liam and Kramer pretty bad. That's a win.

That said, Meyer has had success this year in Indiana. The fact that Kelly is battling Meyer and Saban for recruits is important.

Good athlete, and I'll err on the side of the coaches, but I still find the lack of defensive highlights disturbing.

I'm still not entirely convinced that our coaches are recruiting him.

Isn't it weird that Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, and ND all haven't really pursued him? It's been WVU vs PSU, and Franklin has zero eye for talent. It's as if he just goes down an ESPN300 list and offers everyone.

Yup.

Everyone sees the stars and gets hypnotized, and maybe they're right, but there's plenty of evidence suggesting something odd here.

Senior Highlights were crazy. Thought I had the wrong guy. ILB playing WR, throwing a Half-back pass, and RB. When he did hit somebody, he hit them "all the way to the ground" and had good instincts in pass coverage. Wasn't thoroughly impressed with his footwork but he's a great athlete and that will come. His competition was weak but that's not his fault. Want.

if Bolden came to ND its likely he would never have played much. Unless he took Joe's spot lol

Just told 247 that he will take three January official visits... Notre Dame, West Virginia, Penn State. Going to be an interesting one to follow.
