I hear that he sent a Dubium to Pope Francis asking for clarification on AL, and that shit won't fly.

I don't know if it's court ordered stuff or ResLife (or whatever the hell they call ResLife these days) ordered stuff. I'd lean towards ResLife related. Like maybe ND said "OK, all of you guys who got arrested for weed can stay enrolled and eligible as long as you do XYZ"... and maybe he wasn't doing that.

Who knows what really happened. But I'd just like to point out that, in my opinion, the bolded is not a typical university penalty for a first time weed offense, even at academically elite institutions.

This is strange. Stepherson always struck me as a good kid.

Wasn't he crying when he got arrested this summer.

Maybe he started hanging out with the wrong people when he came up here. Cough...Redfield...cough...

This wasn't someone getting caught by an RA, this was an arrest.

Getting an underage drinking citation from a cop at most universities lands you in some hot water with whatever their version of ResLife is. I'm sure a possession charge does the same.

And I take pride in being behind a university that has a moral code like it does. However, you cant run a race with one leg. And it is not fair that the media crucifies every little thing while holding ND up to all results win wise like the schools that do not have such a moral code.

Problem is that the day ND goes to that Ivy league, the school will cease to exist. No one will watch that football and national attention will go away. Without that, ND as a university is done. Face it folks, ND has the following it has for one reason...football. Take that away on a national scale and the school is just a small dot in a crappy town.

But honestly, if ND is going to compete, it is time for the PED and such. If not, pack it in.

You never cease to amaze me. I think you are very close to stealing Koon's crown.

That's not my experience but I'll take your word for it.

FWIW, I got an underage from a cop in college. At no point was expulsion or semester suspension ever on the table.

Was it Fulton County?

See, the real problem with all of this is the incredible lack of disciple evident in the program.

No, by discipline I am not talking about 'punishment.'

Nor am I talking about any kind of reactive mechanism.

No program in the country has more goofballs doing airy-fairy, stupid ass shit, than ND.

I hope that's sarcasm.

Name another team in the history of the NCAA, classes, term papers, or teams that has had five players getting extra help on papers cause a team to vacate 21 wins including a 12-0 run to play for a national championship.

No what it is, from my post to you, is a lack of connection. Maybe this will clarification will help.

Sure other kids have rapists, murderers, mother-fuckers, and father-fuckers on their teams. By the way, ND doesn't.

But, gee golly willikers! ND has boys that have been so busy doing the work, that they are going out on a road trip with pot, a gun, five to a compact (five large racial profile units) with a broken tail light?

Every one of these things are stupid, petty, immature, cluster-fucks of activity that would be laughable.

Me?
If I am going to cheat on papers, I am going to (pay) someone that can't be traced back to the program.
If I am going to a party with nefarious intent, I am not going with a gang of bozo's!
And I certainly am not going to draw attention to myself just like the clown car at the circus!

Shall I go on?

Don't get me wrong. I am absolutely glad that the problems with ND student athletes are not like Chain Gang U, but the stupid petty shit that happens is unbelievable, and shouldn't be happening. Not at all.

PS. And we are taking about just the things that couldn't be kept out of the press. There is so much more to this!

No, Bogs. You should challenge him to find another team that has ever gift wrapped an entire investigation to the NCAA.

We never hear a tenth of what goes on in most programs. I have a lot of friends / ex-teammates in the coaching profession and when I hear stuff that goes on I can only shake my head. ND is under external AND internal microscopes and the Admin uses the media as their Confessional.

So the answer is the vast majority of schools have much worse going on than ND. No one gets out of town with a clean media record if they do wrong... besides Davonte.

But they probably asked you to do some stuff, right? Or gave you some sort of slap on the wrist?

And what would've happened if you blew off that stuff or otherwise didn't do what they said?

question for ya lax.

this wasn't AT the university like your post says. This was off campus. Had they not been football players what is the likelihood that a university would even find out?

if im a regular ND student, and i get underage drinking citation back home at a bonfire how/why would ND ResLife have anything to do with my punishment?

Obviously he IS a football player which makes this different but would seem that ResLife shouldnt be able to additionally punish a student because he is a public figure. That would be on the Athletic Dept/Football team to tack on, right?

Back to stepherson, I can only think of a few things that he would have been required to do as part of his probation. Community Service? Drug Tests? Regular Check Ins?

If he isnt meeting some requirement like that, then tough shit buddy.

Exactly.

Bogs, this is an incredibly weak point to make. There is so much rampant cheating going on in college athletics that gets swept under the rug, its ridiculous. This happened because ND self reported it. How many big time football programs are doing that?

100%

Because rules apply at all times. Doesn't matter the crime and whether it was committed on or off campus. The code of conduct is ever-present while you're enrolled.

A kid I lived with at ND (whose brother is a current walk-on) got a ticket at a concert way away from campus while we were in school. He had to jump through all kinds of hoops legally to get it expunged and also do some ResLife stuff like any kid that gets a ticket from Indiana State Excise Police off campus at a raided party, etc. If you commit a crime, ND will find out, and if it violates Du Lac then you face those consequences as well.

Obviously he IS a football player which makes this different but would seem that ResLife shouldnt be able to additionally punish a student because he is a public figure. That would be on the Athletic Dept/Football team to tack on, right?

Right, I don't know any specifics. I really don't, that's why I asked if anyone here had an on campus source saying something similar. I'm really just guessing at what the problem is based on tidbits of information... something like community service is very easy to get behind on, and people miss mandatory meetings/check-ins for lots of reasons... these kinds of things would make sense as being "the problem," but I don't know if that's true.

At my school, the penalty was under a points system where once you had 10 points then you were kicked off for a semester. The penalty is also completely discretionary so not all offenses are treated the same (as an extreme example, one student caught wrong place, wrong time with a beer in his hand vs. another found passed out in a ditch next to a public road).

So when I got an underage, I was given 3 or 4 points and basically told not to do it again. I didn't have to do anything to "make good" considering it was a first offense. Perhaps ND is more strict with this stuff, but extra requirements like community service or periodic drug tests seem like an overreaction to me.

Bogs, this is an incredibly weak point to make. There is so much rampant cheating going on in college athletics that gets swept under the rug, its ridiculous. This happened because ND self reported it. How many big time football programs are doing that?

Agree. There's rampant cheating in college period, not just in athletic programs. Kids are away from their parents for the first time in their life -- they are going to drink, many will smoke, and some will find ways to cut corners academically. Where I went to school, it was common knowledge that a significant minority (~25%) of our football team (FCS) smoked.

No. Not saying it is right or wrong, but ResLife has authority over ALL students; including athletes. It's one tool that the University uses, to reinforce that these players are STUDENTS FIRST.

You are missing my point.

I got no problem with kids drinking till they puke. If they don't do it, who will?

I have no problem with madness and mayhem.

What I am saying is that the exact kind of shit that is happening at ND and gets reported and results in everyone's panties twisting in the wind, is just the kind of shit that indicates an undisciplined program. The kind of program where kids really aren't cared for and managed well. Certainly not in a championship manner!
