Can they pay him more cuz he's from Canukastan?
If you were him, which team would you choose? I'd definitely sign with the Hamilton Hoser's #TakeOff
Hamilton Tiger Cats, or TiCats.
The league minimum for rookies is $65,000 annually. A few years ago, the Toronto Argonauts tried to sign T. J. Jones, a Canadian by birth, to a $200k/yr contract but the deal was voided by the league office.
As for Claypool, he is from Abbotsford, BC, which is less than an hour from Vancouver. The hometown team for him would be the BC Lions (who play out of Vancouver), but it’s not a guarantee he would play there. He is not currently on their negotiation list.
The CFL has something called negotiation lists, which give each team a chance to strike a contract with a certain player should that player decide to play in Canada. Most of those players are on active NFL rosters/practice squads. It may be unusual to hear, but teams will trade negotiation rights for players on their lists for draft picks (yes, the CFL does have its own draft for Canadian born players across the NCAA and CIS).
Long story short…Claypool’s rights could be moved to another team.
