Like him, but I’ll not believe he can beat a very good team until I see it. Too many happy feet, skittish, uneven performances against the best teams we’ve played. I’m like some others here - not mad, not excited. I’m pretty sure everyone saw this coming though. It’s kind of a shame we’ll likely never see Jurkovec get meaningful reps. I did like what little I saw during the season.

I will say that our ceiling is pretty defined (yeah I know he helped us go 12-0 as a starter most of the year). I’m very happy to have a B to B plus QB, however this team probably needs a guy with higher upside to close the gap and Book ain’t it based on a pretty extensive track record.

I liked his improvements at the end, but it gives me no confidence that he won’t “Clemson” or “Michigan” again when challenged by a very good team. Not saying Phil should play in front of Book next year (Book put the competition away in his last games this year), I just was looking forward to seeing if Phil turns out to be what everyone hoped.

Pretty unfair to say if he can’t unseat a QB like Book (very good record, pretty good in most games), that Phil stinks. My hope is he stays for the degree realizing he’s a play away from being able to prove his mettle. If Book runs more as he has lately, that chance is not a long shot.

At the end of the day Book is stability. Phil probably leaves. If Book gets nicked up, Clark provides backup duties (unless Pyne tears it up in practice). Pyne beats out Clark in 2021 and place holds for the next savior in Buchner. I’m a big fan of him and think he’s the real deal.....although I’ll admit I was a pretty big fan of Phil too

Either way, these are good problems- having 4.5 star QBs leaving because the guy in front of him is too good to beat out.

You can use Clemson as a concern but the Michigan game was 100% the fault of the coaching staff. Patterson is a gun slinger but he had just 1 more passing yard than Book did. The reason we got jail sexed is because UM had 303 rushing yards and ND only had 47. I don't understand how anyone can blame Book for that game. The entire team was a no show. Hell, blame the defense more than Book. Nobody seems upset about any of the defenders who are returning next year. They crapped the bed worse than Book.

I agree somewhat, but it was pretty clear they weren’t at all concerned with Book being able to stretch the field. That made us easier to defend. I do believe the entire team and staff were awful that night, but I don’t think Book should get no blame.

Most people agree that Kizer was a very good and accurate QB. Even he couldn't throw in a monsoon. I think the NC State game was a little wetter than the scUM game but that is the type of game you RTDB. Maybe it was obvious we couldn't do that so it made it easier to cut off passing lanes. I have much more faith in Book than I do our ability to run the ball this year. Even with some of his less than stellar performances.

It's behind a paywall, but Bill Connelly tabbed Ian Book as one of his "best bets" for the Heisman:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">HEISMAN BEST BETS ($). In which I tell you that Ian Book is this year's best Joe Burrow candidate (and maybe share some GOOD ideas too).<a href="https://t.co/FYrp5eJgxF">https://t.co/FYrp5eJgxF</a></p>— Bill Connelly (@ESPN_BillC) <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPN_BillC/status/1250445642910052352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 15, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Not too surprising. If the offense is good and ND wins 11 games, Book is gonna get major Heisman talk. I wouldn't bet on him to win, but it's part of being of the ND quarterback.

If Book can put together a complete season like the stretches he's had in the past, he'll certainly be in the conversation. But, and it's a big but, he needs to do it on the bigger stages. He'll have to play well against Clemson. He'll have to play well against Wiscy. On the road at USC. Those are his prime time matchups.

With the abbreviated spring and summer workouts, having a seasoned QB like Book is going to pay huge dividends this year. I think this also favors ND overall.

Question: How many practice videos of players will it take before someone starts drinking the Kool-aid?
Answer: We only need one workout video of Book before declaring that we’re gonna get that ship this year!!!
I kid I kid. Your point is one that I hadn’t considered before, but I completely agree with. We return a lot of experience in the right places that make it easier to navigate a shortened offseason. Hopefully that shows on the field this year (assuming football happens that is)

I agree and you can say this about all positions. Notre Dame will benefit from having loads of experience at QB, OL, LB, and DL.

Conversely, if season is cancelled, ND's opportunity with experienced players will go for naught. Hoping season goes forward.

I think it will also pay dividends that a guy like Kevin Austin has limited film but has been around long enough to likely have enough rapport with Ian Book. Should help them hit the ground running as his primary target come September. Give the other guys some time to develop.

Hate to put too much on one game, but Clemson is make or break for Book. A Clemson blowout means no playoffs, no Heisman, etc. Play Clemson close or somehow pull off the upset and anything can happen the rest of the way.

I'm one of the few guys here who doesn't need a championship to drink the Koolaid, so I've been drinking it for months. --- and Book is reason number one. Clark Lea number two. OLine number three. DLine number four. Hamilton number five. ... etc

Conversation heard:

Book: hello, Coach Quinn.
Quinn: howdy, champ.
Book: how's the OLine room looking this season?
Quinn: your only task is to see over them.
Pyne: how are the recruits looking?
Quinn: Monsters, Drew ... Monsters from the Id.
Buchner: I'll have some of that Koolaid, coach.
Quinn: So will I.

Big time. The wild card, so far as we know, is the 27 year old first time OC.

I don't need kool aid or film on Book to be all aboard the Book and Reesus train. They are the last things I'm worrying about this season.

Thomas Rees is among the least of my concerns for the 2020 season.

Tommy Rees, on the other hand, has me quite concerned. Is he still slower than fat South Bend cops? Can he throw farther than 25 yards in the air?

Tommy is no more. Rees has ascended:

This is unique territory for us.

We haven't had a returning 3 year starter in a while, not since Jimmy Clausen (and I wouldn't consider his first year experience as much as an exercise in torture).

Ian can very close to succumbing to the mythical sophomore slump, but redeemed himself later in the year. Now he has the chance to make the jump into the next level.

Rees is not a concern for me.

While I agree that the experience coming back at the other positions will be very beneficial, my point was more on the mental makeup and discipline of the team during this past spring and this summer. ND has 1 player isolated. Clemson has like 13 or 14? What this tells me, is that ND's kids for the most part are better disciplined when on their own, meaning they were probably following the training and workouts more closely during their free time.

Of course there's nothing scientific to base this upon, but these kids did chose a school where you have to apply yourself.

After looking at Books HS film and Pyne's HS film I think Pyne is similar but better. Seems to have a stronger arm, but also just as accurate.

Advantage Irish: if football has to move to spring and we are still playing Clemson Lawrence would likely not play and Book would. Kinda even things out a little, doesn't it?

Season will probably be canceled before it gets moved to the spring. Too many hurdles.

If they want to make it happen in spring they can. Probably would be less than 12 games, maybe 8. Start first week of March with Bowl games in May. No large break between season and post season, maybe 1 week extra. Lots of decisions but I’d be happy to see it in Spring. Biggest issue to me is start of 2021 Fall season and obviously draft. Great discussion topic.

Do we have a legit backup to Book? I posted that I thought Drew P would’ve seen more significant time in our blow out win considering the situation with COVID. Never know who has to play. I might’ve missed it, just didn’t see who’s the clear #2.

Clark is the #2 but he was unavailable last week IIRC.
