He doesn't have the arm strength to be an elite QB but he clearly has the mental chops that Wimbush just doesn't have. If the game doesn't slow down for Wimbush through spring/fall camps, it's Book's job IMO.

Gamer.

Will he be a top draft pick? Doubtful, but he has more than enough arm and mobility to be a playoff quarterback.
Here’s to Ian and Brandon pushing each other to be the best they can be.

Lulz. Somewhere in this thread I posted that I thought Book would never play a down at ND. Crow eaten.

I’d like to see Wimbush moved to slot and used on a lot of jet sweeps and wildcats.

Book is the starter next season. He has the composure, and he make up

Kinda reminds me a bit of Johnny Football...anything can happen at any time, good or bad.

You're not the only one. There were lots of people who hounded on us for even taking Book.

I've been on the Wimbush train all season and just letting him grow, but after today all in on Book for next season. He plays with poise and confidence. I love Wimbush's physical traits but his mental makeup is too much like Golson.

Does anyone else look at Ian Book and see Tommy Rees with slightly better wheels? And then remember how frustrated we all became with Tommy.

The backup QB is always the most populate guy...

I see Book more like a weaker armed Drew Brees than a slightly faster Tommy Reese.

Who is this Reese of whom you speak?

Book is a much faster Rees. He would have outrun the cab.

Open competition. If Brandon beats him out it means he improved significantly. Win/win for the team.

Collected some good old posts from this thread so you guys don't have to look back through it yourself.

Some very positive, some very meh. Enjoy.

Cool? I think

Project guy with good potential. I don't expect him to start for us unless it's a dire emergency. We needed a QB that wouldn't scare away Hunter.

Project? Potential? How exactly?

Deshone Kizer is an example of a guy with "potential"... Book is a guy who seems downgraded for his stature. He's like the polar opposite of a Jacob Eason or Hackenberg in terms of projecting upside.

I don't see a project at all. I see a guy without sexy tape or elite physical traits, but probably very little risk of "failure."

100%. This is more Tommy Rees than Dayne Crist. Which is honestly probably exactly what we need in this situation. Ian looks like a 'gamer', as cliche as that sounds.

IMO odds are very low this player will ever play at QB for ND.....nothing personal there , I mean he seems like a great kid and very smart. But I don't get this offer at all....this class will be Kelly's lowest ranked group as we roll into years 5 & 6 , not a good sign in my view.

This offer/commitment is about depth insurance, not looking for a future starter. It has everything to do with the staff's pursuit of Hunter Johnson while making sure we're not stuck with Montgomery VanGorder behind center in 2017 after a freak injury(s) or unforeseen transfer (no insult intended toward MVG). I'm glad they're both taking a 2016 QB and keeping the door open for HJ next year.

As for the separate issue of class rank, I can only say that it's still early August and I trust the coaching staff over any recruiting analyst. When signing day comes I believe this class will provide the mixture of depth and immediate impact that the team needs.

Per Wiltfong, Sanford spoke with Hunter about Book and there is no problem. Wiltfong's confidence that Hunter ends up Irish is only growing.

no problem as long as we're good with Hunter.

pretty good job by the kid and staff keeping this under the radar

Not sure what everyone is so upset about.

To me, Book is the next Kevin Hogan... a smart kid who isn't going to transfer or get in trouble and who would be content as a backup.

That is pretty good if you ask me.

Am I the only one that completely forgets that we have a '16 QB committed?

Whenever I see this bumped, i'm like "Oh nice, a new commit".

But then I remember that he is not new.

reminds me a lot of OU's Baker Mayfield

Didn't notice he has a birthmark below his eye.

Drew Brees 2.0 confirmed

Yeah, will be nice to have a stable QB that won't bolt after a year or two when they realize they aren't moving up the depth chart fast enough. Upgraded Evan Sharpely
