I have a strong belief that BK uses his in-home to great effect and lands this kid.

per andrew at rivals---feels ND has a WAY better chance that it had before and feels his attitude has changed since speaking w/ him 1 on 1 in summer

Elston on his way to see Kelly.

I have to admit I am optimistic about this one, just based on the kind of kid Caleb is. He seems like he'd be a great fit at ND (I didn't think JuJu was coming, BTW).

I actually think the challenge is going to be selling BVG's defense. We'll need to explain why things are going to change going forward.

Contact period start Thursday and Elston will be visiting Kelly, McCulloch, and Jones starting on Thursday.

We should expect a heavy heavy does of coaches at these kids homes. Good idea to start with Elston and get into the heavy hitters later.

If I were a defensive recruit I'd have plenty of questions about the ND defense

We need someone to replace the Butkus winner and we think you are that guy. Not a bad sales pitch.

Strong pitch to an 18 year old kid. Pretend you're the dad.

"Coach, there's a lot we like about Notre Dame but we've also done our homework. Why do teams with less talent (Penn State, Wisconsin, Boston College, Pitt) perform so much better than your defense"?

Did I mention that our last two HS Butkus award winners were all-americans and contended for national championships? One nearly won the Heisman and both were high draft picks. Meanwhile, unlike the other schools you mentioned, we will prepare your son to be a man by meeting expectations both on and off the field as well as becoming a world class leader that will propel your son throughout his life.

oh.....and do you have a blow up mattress I can use tonight as I watch your kid sleep?

Still want to know why those teams' defenses are better than yours, coach.

I'm curious why a defense being not-great would be a turn off to an elite defensive prospect that is shown that they can get a talented player to play at an uber-elite level.

Like, why would it matter to Kelly that the defense gives up points? Or that Joe Schmidt struggled at times? Or that Redfield is impossibly bad? Literally... why does that matter to someone like Kelly or McCulloch at all?

This isn't like offense, where the overall success of the offense matters to a QB or RB where everything is interconnected and someone not doing their job can directly impact your ability to showcase your skills (or can impact you in a great way if you have a Wisconsin level OL, etc.)

To elaborate... if NO ONE was playing well with draft stock rising on this defense then I could see there being an issue. But you watch guys succeed like Jaylon and Day and even Okwara this year and I don't understand what the neg recruiting pitch is at all. I could understand it potentially for players in the secondary that might say "geez, none of those guys are playing that great and some of them have some pretty solid physical talent"... but that really isn't the case in the front 7.

To an outsider looking in, Van Gorder is obsessed with his scheme and sticking to it no matter the personnel or their strengths (Jaylon flying off the edge, Trumbetti rushing QBs) or weaknesses (Rochell in pass coverage, Schmidt blitzing).

Obviously he doesn't. Kelly's teams, ND and OU were within 2 points of each other. McCulloch cares even less if it's down to ND and Texas. Texas gave up 30 a game vs. ND's 24.

If I'm a stud defensive player, I'm pulling 3 or 4 of my D boys from the summer circuits into ND and taking over. If you're a REAL beast, you're gonna play quick, have the world watching your every move (in a good way) and go to the league in 3 years.

Is Bama going to have to explain their defense to recruits after giving up 40 points and 550 total yards to Clemson? Of course not. Recruits think a lot differently than fans do when it comes to recruiting decisions.

Don't by it. You have that view because you follow ND very closely. Most recruits don't follow the schools they are considering THAT close. Hell, I don't notice half the stuff a lot of people post on here and I am at all the games and some practices.
