Gotta think the rumors of A&M's OC being a potential HC candidate at a few schools would work in the Irish's favor with Soso and Guyton. But Sumlin is a great recruiter. I wouldn't count him out on any recruit at this point.

As i said in the skunkbear thread Im a big fan of Spavital but there's a huge number of guys in that Hal Mumme/Mike Leach coaching tree that Sumlin can plug in @ that OC spot and they wouldn't skip a beat.

Agree. But I do think recruits build relationships with their position coaches and that has a lot to do with their choice of schools. The fact that Spavital may be leaving may hinder that somewhat. But yeah... a lot of coaches out there could fill the spot easily.

Possibly it would affect guys like Kyler Murray alright and any future QB's they might have targeted. i still think they could overcome a possible Spavital departure with ease though.

The current WR situation at A&M is pretty packed. They have plenty of guys to throw to and Kirk looks more and more like he lands in Aggieland as well. I think Guyton would be a numbers casualty for them.

I think cooks and Alford have done a heck of a job with Guyton and Soso.

I don't think offensive players going to a&m are doing so because of Ryan Gossling or Spicoli. They're going because of Sumlin.

Obviously relationships matter. But losing Spavital would cause minimal damage, I believe.

I am not sure they come from the same tree, though some branches are tangled.

Sumlin comes from the Mike Price / Joe Tiller tree.

“He had learned about this one-back spread stuff early on at Washington State, because that’s what we were running with Mike Price,” Tiller said. “When I hired him at Wyoming, we were running the one-back spread, and of course at Purdue in the Big Ten we were running the one-back spread. He had a lot of exposure to that offense. A guy that’s a smart guy will pick things up.”

When he went to OU, he had Bradford and AP. He altered into a more power spread with AP and when he went to Houston in 2008, he switched up to the air raid he runs now due to the lack of OL he could recruit at Houston and that Houston had the players matching what he had learned from Price at WSU and Tiller at Wyoming and Purdon't. Oh, and having a guy like Keenum makes it easier too.

All true dude I probably should have labelled Sumlin's last two OC's Kingsbury and Spavital as Leach/Holgerson guys.

FWIW, Jake Brown says this is one to watch with AM. Guyton still claims he's 100% committed.

A&M starting to work K. Bussey as well.

I also read that Guyton was scheduled to go to the Aggie / Ark game last weekend. Don't know if he did or not.

A&M's remaining schedule is Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, LSU

If they lose an early one, they may start to crumble. That's some high pressure scheduling.

"It was fun. It was crazy".

Likes Texas AM. Says if he changes his mind, it will be to Texas AM. Talks to coaches a lot.

He didnt even go to AM. That game was fun and crazy to watch on TV let alone being in-person at Jerrys World.

Edit: Didn't realize the game was not at Texas AM.

1. Aggie reporter so he may have been being polite
2. This was from before the Arkansas game so the "it was crazy" or whatever was about the helicopter.
3. He said "that's where I'm going" about ND.

To me, there wasn't anything in there that would make me panic. A&M is a threat for sure, but he just seemed like a respectful guy who doesn't like saying no.

Also, if he wasn't there, that's a terribly researched article.

Guyton's mid-season senior highlights posted by TP a little bit ago. He looks deceptively fast and very smooth out there. Kind of reminds me of TJ Jones a little bit. I'm sure it helps that he has Kyler Murray throwing him the ball but I like the addition of Guyton to our squad, despite some of the critics out there.

If he were to follow his teammate Murray to A&M, I certainly hope the laws of karma kick into full effect and Fitzpatrick follows Wimbush to South Bend. I'll call it a fair trade and not question the laws of the universe.
