You guys are excited about Tyler Luatua coming back? What is he bringing us in the passing game? Sure as a blocker it will be nice to have him back but we ran the ball just fine without him last year and he has zero career catches. What am I missing?

Ran fine without him? Huh? He played a lot last year and in most of our big runs he had great blocks. Look back in the highlights of last year. The majority of big or TD runs he had a hand in.

This. Luatua may not be Eifert in the passing game, but he is extremely effective in the run game. He's had his share of injuries, but when he's on the field we run the ball well. He was instrumental in the read option in that LSU game. I could see Kelly going to more 2 TE sets with Alize out, use Smythe and Luatua to help dominate the LOS and pound the rock like we did in that LSU game. It would also help take the pressure off our WRs that are fairly inexperienced.

I agree. I wasn't questioning his lack of ability. It's just...a 1.8 is pretty bad. Take football out of it: if you take a 1.8 GPA home to Mom and Pop, think there's going to be a steak dinner to follow?

It's a loss, no doubt. He might be our most talented big receiver.
But it's also an opportunity for Boykin and/or Claypool. And I'd like to think Smythe, at least, is decent at catching a football. And Alize gets a redshirt and hopefully a wake-up call about how the classroom side of things works around here.
As others said if this is the worst of the offseason surprise this is the best offseason in some time.

I always gathered, right or wrong, that Alize didn't naturally profile to ND. However, he's committed to the process. Realizes that there is more to life than the right now.
