It's frustrating though... I don't want to be Bama and have zero moral compass, but I also don't want to be to the point where players get suspended for the entire year for things that apparently won't get players at even Stanford, Nortwestern or other academic schools out for more than one half of one game... Id be very happy with a slight shift to towards 'the win at all costs' side of things, keep a few more players eligible and remain, most likely, the strictest school in big boy CFB... Still.

** to be clear, this is more of a lingering thought than a reaction to just Jones... It's just more relevant now obviously.

You make some great points man and yes it's extremely frustrating but I like how ND handles every player the same whether you are the second string holder or the future All American specimen like Aliz'e

That's kinda strong, man. He didn't fuck over the team. We're fine and he owned up. You can't expect kids to be perfect all of the time.

Dude you're soft as hell. He certainly fucked over the team if grades are the problem. It doesn't matter second man in, he was first.

Perfect all the time my ass.

I agree, I guess I got to the point where I'll take ND winning a few more nattys and bending on a few standards (while still being light years better than most all of CFB in terms of such things, kind of like 88) than never see them win again... I didn't always think this way... I don't know what happened... I suppose it was the realization that they'll almost certainly never win a natty in the current climate.

We'll be just fine. This happens every year. AJ is a great player and I hope to see him next year but I'm sure BK on offense we'll be fine.

Does AJ pay defense? When he does then I'll be too worried.

I agree with the frozen 5, Everett Golson and now Aliz'e shit is getting old

why can't it be Cam McDaniel or Joe Schmidit?

I honestly think my stance on this stuff shifted w the frozen five... For what it's worth... Working in higher Ed There was a time I never thought I'd say these things, but just being honest.

I could not agree more. We can still be an elite institution for learning, yet let some standards for athletes slide just a little. It wont hurt our reputation in the slightest. Hell, our graduation rate would probably even increase over it's already high 98%...
It's time we go back to the 80's for a return to the Holtz years...we need to allow a few guys in each year who might come up just a bit shy of our normal standards, and we need to be a little more lenient on academics.
Our program needs relevance. And what I mean in that is that we need more titles, and more realistic chances at titles. In this climate of CFB we cant have 1 chance every 20+ years for the ability to play and lose in the Natty.

Like most of you I am disappointed and expected Jones to have a big impact this year. However, the biggest benefactor will be Javon McKinney. Javon has big play ability and has drawn several comparisons to Michael Floyd which gets me fired up.

I've come to expect this every year. Not as disappointed or surprised as in year's past.

Exactly. Life is not always roses, and like Wooly's pointing out he's owning it. I'll tell you what, i'll be pulling for this kid big time to come back stronger than ever. I just love his reaction.

What other school does this?

No, I'm not talking about the obvious like kicking star players off for grades.

I'm talking about what other school has the... whatever it is, to have the balls to kick the starting QB of a NC game team, or a 3rd round draft pick, or the former #1 TE off the team the football team (i guess he's not kicked off, but he can't play)? What other school has those same people fight to get back in that same school? Not go somewhere else where academics are easier, or playing time is guaranteed. No, they fight to come back to ND. No other school does that.

It sucks to see a young guy stumble, but it is exhilarating to see him be stand up about it and vow to do better. Who hasn't learned far more from their failures/errors than from their accomplishments?

Remember we have Smythe, Weishar and Luatua with a couple youngins as well. We should be fine but I was also expecting Aliz'e to give us a mismatch that Kelly likes to exploit.

Hopefully the other TEs recognize their time is now.

Stop blaming Notre Dame. It's not like the school wants this kind of news to come from it's institution or football program.

Alizé Jones failed to get a 1.8 GPA his freshman year. A 1.8. Sometimes you have to look in the mirror and take responsibility yourself.

Alizé said the typical stuff in his statement, but will he do it? It's not hard to get a 2.0...that's a C average. It's all about effort. Getting a C average at Notre Dame regardless of who you are is attainable with with the help Notre Dame provide. You just have to take the help and actually apply yourself.

I'm sitting here at work next to my buddy who follows the Gators closely. I asked him how many returning starters get suspended every year for grades. He just started laughing.

Sometimes following ND football sucks.

There are other times?? I mean I've read of such things, but the story always ends with all the Starks dying....

Thought we'd get thru without losing guys but here here for the kid and school to do this. Hope he stays

This reaaaalllly bums me out. Good thing we have good options at TE. Hopefully Durham will have a good year. We can NEVER get through a summer without something like this.

He's never been shy about how much he loves the school (which is actually kind of amazing when you consider his GPA, but that's another discussion kind of), and he seems genuine about wanting to make it.

Do YOU think he'll be dialed in and get himself back?

I'm not going to read all of the comments but I'm just going to give my opinion of what it means for the team.

First off, thank you Tyler Luatua for coming back! Alize was one of many exciting targets for Kizer to throw to this fall. I don't think this is going to be as big of a loss as some people think. Alize is a glorified receiver that struggles with in-line blocking. People, myself included, were so excited what kind of mismatches he could cause; lets be honest, we have plenty of 6'4" guys that we can put in the slot and cause havoc (ESB, Boykin, Claypool, and probably even Weisher). If losing Zaire in week 2 wasn't a difference between wins and losses then this sure as hell shouldn't be the difference in wins and losses either. Having a NFL caliber quarterback will help as well as he will make the receivers around him better and exploit mismatches. To those freaking out, take a chill pill; this is when landing a bunch of badass receivers pays off. This offense won't skip a beat.

It's much better that this happened during his Sophomore year rather than his Junior or Senior year when he would have been relied on much more.

Hopefully this is a blessing in disguise to Aliz'e and the rest of the team. Hoping for a astonishing return next year for Mr. Jones.

Great post. We do have lots of big bodies to cause mismatches. We'll be just fine

You guys are excited about Tyler Luatua coming back? What is he bringing us in the passing game? Sure as a blocker it will be nice to have him back but we ran the ball just fine without him last year and he has zero career catches. What am I missing?

Just more for depth purposes. I agree that he means nothing in the passing game but he will allow Smythe and Weisher to be used more as receivers.

Now I see what you are saying. I thought you meant he would have an impact somehow catching passes

This blows, BUT ... if this is the worst off season news we get, it will officially be the most successful one in the CBK era. I'll take that 8 days a week.

Welp....I guess this officially signifies the start of the season.

Welcome to ND. Like they say if it was that easy everyone would be doing it.
