He's not a chump...put him on the field. We're out of options and I think he might step up to the challenge.

I don't want to say he is better, but more game ready than Morgan.

Damn, this season has turned out to be a shit pile...hasn't it? A perfect storm of mistakes...clean it up, this team isn't so bad.

what i like about greer is that although he's not as fast as the others, like joe schmidt, he trusts his reads and just plays.

he was well coached in high school you can tell

This

We will get to see him the first half next week. Unfortunately he probably won't see a snap after halftime Bo matter how well he plays.

Martini was an extremely pleasant surprise as a true freshman. I hope he carves out a bigger role for himself this year, even with all of the bodies at LB. I thought he played much better than Morgan.

after watching every D play in slo mo and trying to figure out how and why. I must say Greer was absolutely lousy. Greer and Nyles are 7 yards deep and never attacking.

BVG should have them destroying the LOS at the snap. Texas O line got out and on our backers 7 yds off the LOS before they are ever moving fwd.

Unreal!

Should Coney replace him in the starting lineup?

I feel like we've got to get our best athletes on the field on defense, and Martini's just not one of them. So I don't know whether it's Coney or Bilal, but yeah.

Well that's bc BVG ran a 3-man front for most of the night. You don't want your LBs too close to the LOS against that offense bc they can't read the QB/RB and they get caught in traffic. Then you don't want them to close when the QB pulls it and throws the short pass game.

The LB's were also not 7 yards deep. They were at 4.5, which is right where you want them. If you look at the plays again, the plays where they were on the LOS or closer than 4.5, those are the plays they got gashed on.

Would you agree that running a 3 man front against Texas was a mistake?

I like what you bring to the board... Lets stop making excuses for BVG and the defensive staff. They never pulled back for the short pass game on the option read. So for 4 quarters we never adjusted. Period Thats that

Greer also needs the experience. He's never been an every down player... If people weren't ready for these growing pains, I'm sorry. But I totally expected this from the D.

Thank you. The sunshine and rainbows is annoying.

They were absolutely terrible on D. Greer was one of the worst. Got pushed around, and couldn't tackle to save his life.

I'd love to see that, too. But have you seen the way our secondary (tries to) tackles? Pound the LOS with those guys and Texas' QB would have averaged 14 yards per carry instead of 4.

Huge bummer, and a big blow to the defense.

Coney playing as well as he has is sort of a saving grace, but you can't replace the depth, preparation and experience that Martini provides.

Who's up at Buck behind Coney now?

sounds like some young bucks are going to be out there or coney and morgan are going to be having a lot of reps between the 2...i would imagine that jamir jones will be rotated more often in to give some rest and try to keep 1 of the starters in at all times...idk jonathan jones might get it

Of the linebackers, he's the one I worry least about losing, because Coney has been pretty solid. But still. A bummer. He's a quality player and, I think, better in pass coverage than Coney.

I didn't see that Kelly said he's day to day until just now. IF he's out, it will hurt. Here's the snap totals for each LB. Hopefully Coney's in great shape and Bilal & the Jones boys step up big.

https://247sports.com/college/notre-dame/Article/Martini-questionable-for-USC-109066450

Through six games, Drue Tranquill (340) and Morgan lead the linebackers in real snaps played, with Martini (221) and Coney (215) forming the next wave. Asmar Bilal is a distant fifth (127) with Jamir Jones (49) the most used linebacker outside the regular rotation.

Martini leads the team in unassisted tackles --- don't worry about losing him? Jeez. I've noticed a bizarre under-appreciation of Martini practically since day one. What the heck goes on in some people's minds? In my opinion, he is the most instinctive linebacker that we have (perhaps alongside Tranquill.)

p.s. I REALLY hope that we don't have to depend upon Bilal --- he looks disastrously Lost-in-Space a good bit of the time.

I don't think anyone wrote they are not worried losing him. I think everyone pretty much understands that Martini is a good football player. He has a high football IQ, is instinctive and is better in pass coverage than Coney.

Not sure where you saw anyone saying they don't worry about it.

Someone said "worry least about losing," but then still discussed the qualities you think he is underappreciated for.

Wow, I worry about losing him big time. He's played well and now our depth chart takes a huge hit.

Jesus. Chill. My only point was that of our three starting linebackers he's the one with the most proven backup, in Coney.. Of course we don't want to lose Martini. Dude's a good ballplayer.
