Depends what type of OLB we're talking about. Watching Hill's film, it seems like he is an ideal fit for a SAM linebacker in a 4-3.

Four our current 3-4 scheme, I could see him at either ILB or CAT depending on how he develops.

I also doubt that prince shembo would have meet NDs profile at OLB as well, don't care about profile I just want this kid on the team. I could see him starting by his sophomore year.

Shembo absolutely does not fit profile for an OLB in our system. Someone long and fast like Councell would be prototypical. Obviously that shows you that profile isn't everything. So does Sheldon Day ... he is a DE in a DT's body, so we use him at DE, just as Shembo is an OLB in an ILB's body.

The question with Hill is just where the staff might be projecting him, not what he can actually do. We won't really know that till he gets to ND. From his tape, I think he could be either ILB or CAT.

Wouldn't mind seeing him become Irish......especially being from Texas.....there's been some awfully good kids come from the state of Texas as of late, let's keep building that pipeline to Texas!!!!

I will admit I get my Dogs and Cats mixed up at times, but don't Shembo and Councell essentially play different positions in our defense? Shembo more of a rush end and Councell (or Jaylon) more an edge-setting/coverage guy? Shembo's body type - shorter but more powerful- seems like a better fit for what he does than Councell's longer, rangy body type would (though I realize Ishaq Williams is closer physically to Councell than he is to Shembo). I don't recall Councell doing much damage on the pass rush ever, and Jaylon mostly only in blitz or rollout situations. Shembo, on the other hand, can flat out beat a blocker one on one.
Or maybe it's just a credit to how well Shembo has come to own that position that it seems like it was made for him.

You are basically right. The bolded parts are the key.

Councell is a prototypical DOG. Ishaq Williams is a prototypical CAT. The DOG should be a bit faster, with cover skills a priority, and the CAT should be a bit stronger, with pass-rush skills a priority, but ideally they will be somewhat interchangeable so that the defense can't tell what's coming by what personnel is where. Both guys should be essentially long, fast and strong, able to rush the passer on one play and drop back in coverage on the next.

Shembo doesn't fit profile for us at OLB at all, whether DOG or CAT. He's built like an ILB, and he was listed at ILB when he started. If I'm not mistaken, he was rated as an ILB by recruiting services coming out of high school.

But again, what that tells you is that profile isn't everything. Shembo is shorter and stubbier than we'd like at his position, but he is such a relentless, explosive, powerful pass rusher that he has beaten out Ishaq at CAT for 2 years now.

And I wouldn't be stunned if Kolin Hill is able to pull off a similar feat.

Hill looks like a ballplayer. Cat. Dog. Mike. Sam. It doesn't matter as long as he can play.

i have a feeling shembo would be an ILB if he could cover, I'm not really a fan of his at OLB, i believe he gives high effort but he simply dosen't have the length to really threaten the best Tackles consistently. If Ishaq had Shembo's fire though..that would be some player.

Per TV, wouldn't be surprised if he committed on his official for the awards banquet.

I don't think he's nearly the project that many are portraying him to be. Physically he's pretty developed and by watching his tape you can tell that he's very capable of playing with his hand down and standing up. Setting the edge and rushing the passer. Lastly, one of hardest details of effective dline play is use of hands. Players forget to or just don't use good technique. He uses his hands extremely well.

I'm not saying this in a negative connotation, more in similar sense that he could be versatile and moved around similar to randolph who was originally going to be a cat. He is definitely a big skill player. His height could also possibly suggest a position change

I'm not an expert, but he does have much better film than other 4 stars that I have watched in the past. Unless the recruiting services knows something we don't, this would be a great pickup. I think that the fact that his team sucked last year might have something to do with him being ranked so low...

Of the recent low-rated defensive players offered, I loved Nyles Sykes film and also Kolin's, but I wasn't impressed with Jhonathan William's film at all (I watched first 5 minutes).

He's really thin and doesn't play with tenacity like Kolin Hil. Kolin blows people off of the line, and Williams seems to play a little soft. Thin + soft + no 'aggression' = no thanks.

I said Blankership's film reminded me of a poor man's Aaron Lynch, and Williams film reminds me of a poor man's Blankership. Personally, I'd rather we draw the line at Blankership, lol.

The whole concept with Williams (and are you sure you're watching his senior film? There was a HUGE jump up from his junior to senior year film) is that he has great athleticism and frame to pack on the weight. When you watch him in pursuit it's crazy just how freaking fast he is for a guy who is 6'6".

The goal would be to bulk him up (like we did with KLM) and play him as a 3-4 DE where he'd hopefully have the size to set the edge, and could develop into a pass rusher with his speed. No doubt he is a serious project.

Yeah, I was watching first page video (junior film). His senior film looks completely different, in a good way. Competition looks bad, but he's a man against boys and looks much more aggressive.

He's at least 50 pounds away from being a 3-4 DE though. But it's worth the gamble.

Update on ISD:

Texas has started showing some serious interest. Probably doesn't bode well for ND.

Looks like he could blow up here soon.

I think we're fine as long as we get that visit. We're ahead of the curve right now and pressing hard.

Hope so. Kids a ball player. I would say Texas would be extremely hard to beat if they offer. I agree that a visit is crutial.

Yeah assuming we get Morgan I don't see how we have room for the other three. And as I understand it Williams is an absolute take.

All this does for me is show how, while sometimes the staff is slow on some offers, they're shockingly good at finding under the radar guys before everyone else too.

I think that's in large part because Kelly had to find guys like that at C. Michigan and Cincinnati.
