Play your favorite, largely unheard, 60's or 70's covers played in the 60's or 70's.

(Hint: Like a Rolling Stone by Jimi wouldn't count under the 'largely unheard' rule.)

I'll start.

I'll follow up with this beautiful tune.

Perhaps the greatest bluegrass band who's name isn't Bill Monroe or Del McCoury.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

I think this is the kind of stuff you are looking for. Made popular by the movie Juno.

If you are really into this era it may not be unknown... but to the general music fan it absolutely is...

Debatable whether or not it's largely unheard but I'm sharing it anyway

No vocals, but me definitely likey! I was was a junior in high school when California Dreamin' came out.

I am gratified and happy that "youngins" appreciate the melody and find it worth playin' (with) going forward.

I think it meets the criterion. Regardless, I'm glad to have heard it. The boy has taste AND chops.

Song isn't from the 60 or 70's but everyone seemed to cover it then.

This would be the opposite, I think, of what you are asking. The cover is more well known than this original.

A cover.

I do gravitate to the Calypso, Socca and Reggae. I do believe, however, that Peter Green (in an early iteration of Fleetwood Mac) is responsible for Black Magic Woman.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7eANGHVQS9Q?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Carlos Santana clearly performed a version that brought American attention to the song.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bA5FDVu_F3E?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Appreciation, interpretation and ongoing reconstruction is the lifeblood of music.

I present another challenge: What commonly recognized "popular" song was written by and originally performed by another? As an example:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Y-lRmVOGw3M?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/s0aIjyX7vwI?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It's all good. It's all bad. It's all a matter of taste. Hell, The Carpenters were/are the cat's meow to some ... just don't ask me to stay in the room, sit still, smile and listen to them. Karen had a wonderful voice, she just wasted it on a poor selection of songs.

WaveDomer: I could kiss you! The "Respect" cover by Aretha overshadowing the original by Otis has long been my preferred exemplar.

Both are sh¡t kickin' recordings!

I love Otis Redding. His songs are covered all over the place. Here's another that is covered many times, but most famously by the Black Crowes.

There are also great covers done by Peter Gabriel: Strawberry Fields and Summertime, but the time frame wouldn't fit this thread. Not like we're following the challenge anyway. ;)

This one fits:

I'll make an attempt (as feeble as some may think it) to stay within the confines of the 60's and 70's I give you Otis:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UnPMoAb4y8U?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and Three Dog Night:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wpRHimvsyyo?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You decide.

I do appreciate the effort, but aside from the use of a Hammond B-3 there ain't no comparison.

Few people know that this song:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kE3FAY-NOiU?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

was first recorded by these guys:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KWv03Wgz0PQ?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and written by someone else, not sure anyone knows exactly who.

Few know that "Black Magic Woman" was a Fleetwood Mac song covered by Santana...

though I would assume most in this thread know that.
