247 has yet to win me over. For now I'll stick to Rivals for football evals and Scout for basketball evals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't a lot of the Rivals guys leave to make 247? Meaning, 247 is "the new Rivals." I could be mistaken, but I thought I heard that a while back.

Yes Farrell and Gorney are about the only national holdovers.

That's why I think they're ignoring the question. There is no correlation between skill ratings and overall ratings when there obviously should be. This really surprises me as 247 seems to be better than this.

For what it's worth, I never cared much for 247. I've always put more stock in Scout or Rivals. I saw this on another board, not that it's necessary true today:

I entirely disagree. As someone who worked in the recruiting community for a good amount of time, I can say that Scout is by far the most comprehensive of any recruiting service. 24/7 is the worst, followed closely by ESPN, with Scout and Rivals by far the top two. However, in my time working, I noticed that Scout had representatives at nearly every single camp around the country, even ones at smaller schools. Rivals frequently did not but at least had some contacts who would report back. 24/7 and ESPN...forget about it. 24/7 never does any original research from what I noticed, and ESPN only has people at their own sponsored events and gathers the rest of their information from the other recruiting services.

Again, this may be different today. I have no idea if Scout is out watching recruits as much or more than the other services currently. I've always preferred Rivals myself and then Scout. Screw ESPN.

Interesting take. That guy's definitely in a very small minority. I assume that came from a Scout board?

I think that's very much false, with the exception of a select few like Biggins Scout is awful IMO. Excluding ISD I would rank it:

247
Rivals

Scout

ESPN

Personally, as far as ranking recruits goes, I think the best are: 247, rivals, espn, scout. Keep in mind, I'm not talking reporting at all, simply ranking.

What would be cool is just an index of top prospects based on aggregate offers.

(Although academic ineligibility might skew the results. And the top guys would all be equal with every offer in the world).

Justin Brent would be ranked like last then, he has one offer. That would penalize kids that commit early. Also QBs usually have a lot less offers than other prospects while guys that are versatile, regardless of talent usually have giant offer lists because they fit all types of schemes.

It'd be so inaccurate though. Many offers go unreported, especially lower tier offers. And not all offers are the same. LSU offer >> Tulane. Plus, offers are dictated by class needs. LSU might offer said-wr one year because they're short at that position, whereas two years later they would t have offered. Also, like you said, some players don't get some offers because they can't get in and this has nothing to do with how talented they are on the field. Then of course, there's the Justin Brent's who are borderline elite, but are 100% committed and did so early so he has like 2 offers.

I used to like when scout did the '+' and '-' of each player. I wish rivals or 247 would do that.

Exactly right...and let me add that there are plenty of kids who report offers that they never receive. They (or there parents) straight up lie to reporters, just to make their kids seem better than they are and get them more attention in the hopes of getting REAL offers. The schools cannot comment publicly, so many kids get away with it. It's only when coaches tip off reporters that kids get caught lying.

Also, don't forget the schools that offer so many kids that most their 'offers' only mean that they are interested in the recruit and that they will continue to recruit them. But their offers are anything but commitable. Alabama is one such school. Whenever a ND fan says that we got a guy that Saban offered, take it with a grain of salt because they offer anyone they feel like they should continue to recruit and evaluate. Think about how incredibly hot that program is, and they have probably close to 200 reported offers out (don't quote me on that #, havent done the research and only heard that #), and yet they have so few verbals. Why? Because they will only take commitments from certain recruits, regardless of offers.

Looks to me like this. Because I read and reread this bit of the thread until I understood it. I guess if you are a college football fan, a fan of a specific program, that you need to ask yourself if you trust your team's recruiting mechanism.

I would much like to see an evaluation of historical ratings versus output from each program. I think that would be interesting.

My question about rating services has always been; why aren't these guys coaching (or at least recruiting) if they are so good it? The only answer I can see is that there are so many recruits to evaluate, which is what the best staffs excel at, to begin with.

EDIT: Before anyone gets too carried away, I think 1 and I both realize that there are other staffs that do okay, this comment seems to be, and my endorsement of it was for the humorous point it portrayed.

Alabama guys on 247 seem to think he is a Bama lock if they want him. He's been interested in them since the beginning.

First page of the thread:
Per his HS coach, wants to visit ND and Michigan. Texas is ALL over him but many believe Bama is the favorite. TAMU can't be counted out either. Has a lot of family in Detroit.
