This is a monster loss for us. Worst news of the night. I think people expect we'll just plug n play but Bars was consistently our best OL this year.
Time for our OL staff to make their money. Find the best five moving forward.
Damned shame...glad we picked up some elusiveness and pocket presence with Book coming in

Brian Kelly announces Alex Bars suffered a ACL/MCL injury. Lost for the season. Kelly calls it “devastating” for the locker room.
I do wonder if they try to get a medical redshirt for Alex to get him a sixth year. I don't know if NFL teams saw enough of him being good this year to draft him with this injury hanging over him, so he might want to try to come back to show what he can do over a full year.
Horrible loss, though I think there is still some glimmer of hope because I think the exact quote from Kelly was that the training staff feared the worst but would need imaging tomorrow to make sure. So I guess pray that our training staff is incompetent.
Kelly said Ruhland and Banks would both get work in there.

Interesting is that even possible after 5 games?
He sat out his first year, so unless they documented that it was due to injury, he would not qualify for a 6th year due to medical hardship
Certain that you are correct
I think he missed most of the 15' season because of a broken ankle

He did break an ankle in '15 but he had played in 6 games. Here's the appropriate line from his ND Bio.
Appeared in six games and made two starts at left guard in place of an injured Quenton Nelson before an ankle injury suffered against rival USC ended his season
That counts as a year of eligibility but I don't recall the Medical Hardship Waiver text.
P.S.
Bylaw 14.2.5 notes that the incapacitating injury must take place before the completion of the first half of the season. Bars was injured in 2015 in the USC game, the 7th game of a 12 game schedule, the second half of the season. I don't think bowl games get included. ND played in the Fiesta Bowl that year.
Not able to search now (on the 2nd criteria), but my recollection is that there are 2 requirements for the athlete to be eligible for the medical hardship waiver:
1)Played in less than 30% of the teams contests (Alex clearly does NOT meet this criteria for 2015, as he had 6 appearances)
2)Injury occurred prior to the completion of the first half of the season. Given he was injured in the 7th game of a 12 game regular season, he likely doesn't qualify. IF they say that Notre Dame's 'potential' season could be 14 games (with a playoff and NC game appearance), he MIGHT be considered to be eligible under this part (currently unable to look up what they consider a season)
Regardless, he would not qualify for a medical hardship by virtue of appearing in more than 30% of contests
Medical Hardship Requirements
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:
- The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
- The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
- The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
- The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.
All of these must be proven with documentation.
