Were you trying to link to a specific play? Just got the start of the game

The YouTube link worked for me, but just in case, I'm pretty sure it's the second block on this:

Named the 4th Captain according to ND football Twitter.

Alex Bars, OL
A towering right guard for Notre Dame in 2017, the 6-6 Bars has also spent time at right tackle during his tenure in South Bend. At times, he looks out of place on the inside and has trouble clinging to blocks in one-on-one situations.

However, many times, he moves like he's much smaller and destroys linebackers at the second level. Bars might have problems with squatty, one-gap defensive tackles at the NFL level who quickly shoot gaps. He's reliable in pass protection against bigger, taller rushers who try to overwhelm him with power.

Bars seems like a Day Two or early Day Three selection heading into the season, but he'll be one of the key cogs on the Fighting Irish front. With better grip strength and a relatively clean year in protecting the quarterback, and he could sneak into the early stages of Round 2.

Brian Kelly announces Alex Bars suffered a ACL/MCL injury. Lost for the season. Kelly calls it “devastating” for the locker room.

Damn that’s a shame. Hope he makes a full recovery and kicks ass in the NFL.

This is a monster loss for us. Worst news of the night. I think people expect we'll just plug n play but Bars was consistently our best OL this year.

Time for our OL staff to make their money. Find the best five moving forward.

I was a little disappointed with how well we protected the QB. Book did a good job avoiding pressure, but Stanford was able to get quite a bit of pressure up the middle and fortunately Book was good at rolling out and then finding the open guy. I might have been a little toasted and maybe Stanford was bringing more bodies than we could handle, but it certainly seemed like they were dominating our interior at times.

Hate to hear that news. Ruhland stepped in and did quite well. He was very physical with his play. We'll be okay.

As bad as an ACL injury is, watching the replay I though it was much much worse than that. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Horrible loss, though I think there is still some glimmer of hope because I think the exact quote from Kelly was that the training staff feared the worst but would need imaging tomorrow to make sure. So I guess pray that our training staff is incompetent.

Kelly said Ruhland and Banks would both get work in there.

I do wonder if they try to get a medical redshirt for Alex to get him a sixth year. I don't know if NFL teams saw enough of him being good this year to draft him with this injury hanging over him, so he might want to try to come back to show what he can do over a full year.

Interesting is that even possible after 5 games?

Unless the injury is concerning long term I would bet he will still get drafted around the 4th round.

Pre injury Alex worked his way into the second round no doubt. Now if he can rehab, go to combine and perform non field drills and then perform fields drills at pro day maybe he could go in the 4th I hope.

More than anything this might be the best Notre Dame team in 25 years and I feel horrible Alex is done after all the hard work he put in.

Can we please change the title to Notre Dame man?!

He sat out his first year, so unless they documented that it was due to injury, he would not qualify for a 6th year due to medical hardship

Certain that you are correct

I think he missed most of the 15' season because of a broken ankle

He did break an ankle in '15 but he had played in 6 games. Here's the appropriate line from his ND Bio.

Appeared in six games and made two starts at left guard in place of an injured Quenton Nelson before an ankle injury suffered against rival USC ended his season

That counts as a year of eligibility but I don't recall the Medical Hardship Waiver text.

P.S.
Bylaw 14.2.5 notes that the incapacitating injury must take place before the completion of the first half of the season. Bars was injured in 2015 in the USC game, the 7th game of a 12 game schedule, the second half of the season. I don't think bowl games get included. ND played in the Fiesta Bowl that year.

Not able to search now (on the 2nd criteria), but my recollection is that there are 2 requirements for the athlete to be eligible for the medical hardship waiver:
1)Played in less than 30% of the teams contests (Alex clearly does NOT meet this criteria for 2015, as he had 6 appearances)
2)Injury occurred prior to the completion of the first half of the season. Given he was injured in the 7th game of a 12 game regular season, he likely doesn't qualify. IF they say that Notre Dame's 'potential' season could be 14 games (with a playoff and NC game appearance), he MIGHT be considered to be eligible under this part (currently unable to look up what they consider a season)

Regardless, he would not qualify for a medical hardship by virtue of appearing in more than 30% of contests

Heart broken gone the kind though. Really nice of the Stanford player to keep pushing on Alex as he was clearly bent over awkwardly and screaming in pain.

Notre Dame man please!?

How to Get a Medical Redshirt
Written by John Infante

https://www.athleticscholarships.net/2012/07/17/how-get-medical-redshirt.htm

Medical Hardship Requirements
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

All of these must be proven with documentation.

I hope ND applies for it on behalf of Alex. NCAA landscape is changing constantly so it’s worth a shot. He played in 5 games when 4 would’ve been fine for him to get a medical so he’s incredibly close to meeting the criteria for a 6th year. Also, depending on when he got injured in the game you could ask about that too. Either way I hope it works out for whatever he wants to do.
