Right or wrong, teams just can't rationalize taking a G that high. That's why I hope the Colts trade down a few spots, pick up Q and a couple additional picks.

I have that same hope with the Giants.

I wouldn't draft Q with a top 3 pick if I was a GM (unless it was the biggest need and we couldn't get a trade deal worked out). Picks 5-10 are fair game. He's the ideal pro bowl guard who can open holes for your RB, pull and is still good in pass pro.

There are just so many variables to evaluate in the draft/free agency.

Barring injury which you cannot predict, this is as close to a sure fire HOF as it gets. I would be a little surprised if he doesn't go between 6-10. I don't think normal OG rules apply here. Zach Martin went at what #16?

I mean the Colts need help on defense but if Luck is healthy and being able to instantly make the OL better would be huge.

Ponies need a lot of help on D, but they always have since Pagano has been there. Luck can cover up defensive weaknesses as well if he can stand up. Look at the Colts with Manning. Except for Glenn and Saturday Polian's o-lines were never that good. Average at best, but Manning made up for a lot of that. That's why I think they need to get somebody really good on the line to go along with Kelly and Castonzo. Get Q, then work on the D.

Mayock pushes guard Quenton Nelson as a potential top-five pick – ProFootballTalk

Mayock pushes guard Quenton Nelson as a potential top-five pick

As the Scouting Combine approaches and NFL teams prepare to see a bunch of players on a football field doing something other than playing football in Indianapolis, the overall quality of the incoming class of prospect will come into sharper focus. Mike Mayock of NFL Network, who has emerged over the last 15 years into perhaps the best draft analyst of them all, already has a high opinion of a player from a position that often doesn’t go very high in the draft.

Mayock, as explained to Peter King of SI.com, believes that the best players on film so far this year are Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and Notre Dame guard — yes, guard — Quenton Nelson.

“I think when you look around the NFL today and see that there are more and more high level interior pass rushers than there were five years ago, you know have to be strong across the offensive front,” Mayock told King. “Every top-level quarterback I’ve ever talked to told me that what they hate the most is immediate pressure up the middle. If they can step up into a pocket, they’re all happy. And that’s what [Nelson] is. He is a son of a bitch who is going to knock people down in the run game. I call him a people mover. He opens holes. For 330 pounds, his feet are pretty good. I think he can plug-and-play there for the next 10 or 12 years.”

Guards rarely have exited the board in the first 10 picks in recent years, and Mayock understands that.

“I would look at who this kid is, not just on tape, but who the kid is,” Mayock said. “He loves football, lives football, and because of his work ethic, toughness, and natural ability, unless he has an injury, I think this kid is going to be special.”

All it takes is one team in the top 10 to agree with Mayock, and Nelson will become only the fourth interior offensive lineman to land in the top 10 since New Year’s Eve in 1999.

If we all have to guess how high he goes, I think 5-7 is the magic number.

It's also a matter of need for certain teams, Broncos and Jets could be takers.

Everything will become clearer over the next week but I did see an article detailing the feeling in Cleveland where they don't seem enamored with any of the top QBs and may not go QB in the first round again. The same rumor had the Browns going DB and OT with their first two picks... no names mentioned directly but there it is.

Record is 49 by Stephen Paea in 2011 - ridiculous. Q tied for second - his arms are about 2" longer than the other two guys in the same stratosphere, fwiw.

Remember when he was taking martial arts in high school to be better? Just listen to him talk. He is so mild mannered and humbled like a lot of black belts he knows he could break you at any moment

I really hope the Colts take him. Any other selection will be a disappointment for me.

Notre Dame's Quenton Nelson on NFL Draft stock: 'I should be in the top-5 conversation'
Dakota Crawford, dakota.crawford@indystar.com

INDIANAPOLIS – Notre Dame's Quenton Nelson, often described as "nasty," wasn't born the last time a guard was selected with a top-five pick in the NFL Draft.

Last time that happened was 1985, when Atlanta took Bill Fralic with the second overall choice. Even getting picked in the top 10 as a guard is rare as only three have gone that high since 1997. (Washington drafted tackle Brandon Scherff fifth overall in 2015, but he moved to guard as a rookie.)

It's just too hard for teams to pass up on more valuable skill positions and even offensive tackles.

But Nelson believes he should buck the trend.

"I should be in the top-five conversation," he started off, "because you have guys that are dominating the NFL right now. ... They're just working on interior guys and, you need guys to stop them. I think I'm one of those guys."

In-state scouting: How IU, Purdue and Notre Dame stack up at the combine

Hot market:What the Browns and Giants could do ahead of the Colts in the 2018 NFL Draft

He is, by most counts, the best offensive lineman in this year's class. He put together years of "nasty" highlights at Notre Dame — often throwing other young men to the ground and picking up blitzes with absurd instinct and athleticism — and then showed up to the NFL Combine and cranked out 35 reps on the bench press.

It's worth noting, too, that Nelson said he prefers to let his tape do the talking when it comes to this kind of thing. The only reason he brought up being a top-five pick is because he was asked about it.

Nelson said he can slow down interior tackles like Fletcher Cox (5.5 sacks for the Philadelphia Eagles last season), Aaron Donald (11 sacks for the Los Angeles Rams) and Geno Atkins (9 sacks for the Cincinnati Bengals), who continue to stump offensive lines around the league.

And then there's the run game. Nelson, along with Notre Dame left tackle Mike McGlinchey, helped the Irish win the Joe Moore Award last season — given to the nation's best O-Line. Running back Josh Adams followed them to 1,430 yards and, at one point, was a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

Even if he couldn't see the "nasty" blocks during the game, Adams knew Nelson was dishing them out.

"You can kind of feel it, because if the hole is that big, you know he did something crazy," Adams said with a laugh. "You couldn't wait to see it on the highlight and see it on the film."

The word "nasty" must have come up a dozen times during Nelson's 15-minute session with media. At one point, with a completely deadpan expression, he said, "I want to dominate all my opponents. I want to take their will away to play the game."

Nasty, indeed. While Neslon was tearing it up at left guard, McGlinchey was making a name for himself, too. A two-year captain for the Irish, McGlinchey is projected as a late first- or early second-round pick this season.

It's a different game out there on the edge, requiring a little more finesse to pick up rushing defensive ends. McGlinchey used that to explain why some of his highlights weren't more like Nelson's, always "nasty" and getting hyped up on Twitter.

"You just saw him game after game," McGlinchey said. "There was some kind of play that was just jaw-dropping. He makes plays all over the field."

Draft analysts like ESPN's Mel Kiper figure the tape is legit, too, as he has Nelson going seventh overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He says he "dominates defenders and can get to the second level." CBS Sports analyst Pete Prisco has him going eighth to the Chicago Bears, where former Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand was hired this offseason.

USA Today's Nate Davis has Nelson going ninth, to the San Fransisco 49ers: "His only sin seems to be the fact he doesn't play a premium position, at least in the context of draft value," Davis wrote. "But based on merit, it could be argued Nelson is a top-five pick."

Given the chance, Nelson is happy to pick up that argument. And, of course, he came back to one word why to help sure up his pitch: Nastiness.

"That's what I give, is a pocket to step up in," he said. "I also help the offense establish the run through my nastiness, and establishing the run also opens up the passing game. So, I think (I'm) a good choice."

Looks like he's in that top 5 conversation. Now he just needs a dance partner.
