If Khalid Kareem continues to make progress (indications that he is) he'll likely back up Jay Hayes ate SDE while Trumbetti will work with Daelin Hayes at WDE. But Trumbetti can also be somewhat of a swing guy playing both end positions.

i think what people were meaning is that jj is a high motor, athletic guy , TE in high school and is pretty quick....in watching trumbetti in high school he was a very high motor, fast for his size, played TE...i can see the comparison in terms of traits, not height/weight

If I remember correctly returned kicks too. I compare him to Tom Z out of high school except without the boxing gloves.

Personally, I do think Trumbetti, Tillery, and Jay Hayes will have big improvements this year, and that could be a big deal considering they do have 4-star potential.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean they are going to look like the 2012 team, where two out of 3 guys had 5 star potential.

But the biggest thing that was holding this D-line back lately (besides scheme) has been, IMO, the lack of consistent, confident leadership, like KLM provided (remember him "eating lunch" after big plays). They had big bodies, but not a lot of want-to (think Jones in the Miami game...).

Day was the last guy with exactly the right attitude. But it was cancelled out by bad leadership from the DC, and a bunch of young, inexperienced, subpar, or quiet teammates.

Tillery had his head elsewhere-- Showtime, Ireland, school elections, etc.
Jones was never fully healthy or bought in.
BVG, with all his antics, didn't have what it took to get their attention.

Jay Hayes needed consistency and direction.
BVG provided neither.

Trumbetti needed consistency and strength.
BVG and Longo were a terrible combo for that.

Rochelle was quiet.
Okwara was quiet.
Cage wasn't good enought to be a leader.

Add to all this a DC who refused to rotate meaningfully, and you have a really bad situation.

If there is any improvement in accountability and passion, which you are clearly seeing from Trumbetti, Tillery, D. Hayes, and even J. Hayes, there is going to be BIG improvement. The only issue is whether they can stay healthy enough to have good play at tackle, which is a real concern.

EDIT: Good to see Trumbetti and Tillery making everyone walk behind them on the way into the new locker room. Again, they look like they are starting to see themselves as alpha-males.

Agreed. If our d line can play up to its four-star potential, it should be fine, at least. The depth inside is worrisome. But the starters all seem capable of playing at the level we need. Any chance Jay Hayes can slide inside sometimes to spell Bonner? Would be a way to get our four most talented guys on the field. Or is he strictly a big DE?

I agree with the staff that it would be great if they didn't have to, but we'll see.

If it was me, Hayes would be sliding inside on 3rd and longs, but it sounds like they don't want to do that.

I guess I have to remember that we are move like a 3-4 again.

I believe Kelly said that they intend to keep Jay Hayes on the edge and have no plans on moving him inside for now.

Haven't noticed him at all all season. Just noticed he was at the bottom of the stat sheet from yesterday. Thanks for letting me know.

Shame he couldn't have played for Elko his whole career. No telling what kind of player he'd be now.

Gotta be a kick to the Nads to get cut for a Long Snapper

i actually watched him closely in the HOF game and their 2nd game versus the Browns and he was what he was at ND, makes effort but cant make any plays/create impact because his pass rush skills are non existant. He's not long enough to handle tackles blocking him and can't shed.

I wonder if shedding weight and trying to play ILB would have helped him. He had the necessary athleticism, even playing closer to DE weight.

he struggled to put on weight (bad frame) and it took him 4 years to do it and his impact was still minimal.
